Honey, I know EXACTLY what you mean...but unfortunately, it`s way too late to reverse any damage that the different mediums of entertainment have caused. But it`s good to see someone in your age range (13-17) care about that kind of thing. You don`t see that anymore. It`s a rare thing. Keep being yourself, and always stand for what is right, even if you stand alone.

He already had a field day when he found out that in an assassination mission you have to kill a lawyer who happens to rant on about the damage that video games are causing to society.

Honestly, the real issue regarding youth right now is why stupid students who really have no academic future in life can get into higher learning institutes because of sports.

If people are gonna go on crime sprees it`s cuz

    A) They don`t have the money so they will steal. This has been happening since Jebus was around, except it was food then. That was a survival thing, not because ppl are too lazy to work or the country doesn`t pay it`s poorer sections enough like today.

    B) They have a mental/psychological problem in the first place, which they then would have commited a crime like murder regardless of a computer game.

Why didn`t the kids who play Doom/Duke Nukem/Wolfenstein shoot each other or commit crimes????

This should not under any circumstances be pulled from shelves. If they let this be taken off the market, do you know how many movies with similar content would also have to be pulled? I`m sure hundreds of games, DVDs, shoes, clothes, and other items are stolen every day that AREN`T GTA4. But no one gives a poo about those.

That was the basis for the reason why Columbine happened, cuz the kids were into Doom. Although obviously it`s bullpoo. try explaining this to Jack Thompson, he`ll just tell you to Fudge off and die.

As far as desensitizing the youth of America, and indeed any youth, sure, GTA4 has content that exactly that, and of course, a mature rating isn`t going to keep it out of the hands of people who aren`t old enough. However, I support Rockstar because their games are incredible, I was there at midnight for the release of GTA4. The youth are constantly exploited and exposed to desensitizing material, through movies, pornography, advertising, TELEVISION. It takes integrity and conviction to realize that although they are fun and enjoyable, aren`t necessarily meant to be emulated. Jack Thompson isn`t right, but he also isn`t wrong, and the same goes for people arguing against him. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, a few bad apples ruin the bunch, as is being demonstrated in the video.

"The youth are constantly exploited and exposed to desensitizing material, through movies, pornography, advertising, TELEVISION"

That just reminded me. Remember all the copycats after Jackass became a big hit? At least ten years before my neighbours were throwing themselves off their second story roof onto rocks, throwing mousetraps at each other (only wearing shorts)

If kids are gonna do stuff THEY ARE GOING TO DO IT. They don`t need any influence if the thought is already there. I really REALLY hope they don`t take the game off the market cuz I really wanna play it (when I get a PS3 in fifty years time)

no, no its not, you can`t kick windows in police cars or rob a gamestop
    "cartridges"
research the topic your reporting on

I don`t see what the problem is with GTA, most minors only want it because there not supposed and a lot of what goes on is too much for them, but in actual content its about as violent/graphic as the departed and no country for old men, and kids aren`t committing crimes because of those? this is a classic case of blame the new medium for evil!

Not only do they put more work in sports than most valedictorian do in school, but then they have to get atleast a C in school. Not to mention that they attract more students to join than any other group.

@estilopanama that is precisely why games like these are 18+ but parents will buy it for their kids anyway so that doesnt matter. this game is made for people who are not retarded enough to be influenced by GTA4 and other games like that.

i think that the ESRB should make a rating called NRP which means Not for Retarded people. retards who are 27 and cant get a job is who the game is not made for because they will do stupid things like theese

To people complaining about the game ruining youth... sadly you`re probably right, but it`s entertaining, and thats what people want in a game, if you can make an educational or wholesome game that is as involving and entertaining, then do so, but sadly I dont see it happening.

I`m sure when Rockstar made the game, they realised that most people can tell the difference between fiction and reality. I wouldn`t play it just `cos I`m not into that kind of game. Besides all that, there`s a reason why it has a rating.

Anyway, if you ban GTA the whole economy of my local area will probably crash. Rockstar is a Scottish company.

Marencolleen, look on the bright side, at least he`s not on World of Warcraft XD

Why do the media always give us the impression that everyone is just a brainless zombie who is affected by everything around them dramatically?

We are not all 8 year olds, we should know what`s real and what`s not. (Or do people really have that little amount of free will?)

I`ve played through 3 of the GTA games, and yeah, they are really immoral, but they are fictional stories ABOUT CRIMINALS, they don`t present the characters as heroes, and even young kids see the difference. I mean, how many films and TV shows do we let kids watch that are about BAD people? Sopranos? John Woo films? Even classics like "Rebel without a Cause" and "On the Waterfront" are about BAD PEOPLE. The GTA games are probably the closest thing the gaming industry has to real "ART". (OK, there are games like Final Fantasy as well.) I see this as the next level, and even though I am anti-violence, I`m a Christian, and a feminist, I totally defend their right to pursue this new artform. If you are on the cutting edge, you`re going to provoke people, and that`s how society moves forward.

And yes, girlgamers DO play GTA. (BellaOnline has one of the best GTA walkthrus, and it`s written by a woman) At least until someone makes a series as fun and complex and interesting with a Female lead :)

    AND!!!
    (POST THREE)
I love GTA because it sparks so much interesting discussion, I`ve probably spent as much time talking about it as playing it!
marencolleen, if your hubbin is really THAT obsessed with this game, but is usually a great guy, that actually says a lot about him IMHO. GTA appeals to guys in a way we don`t really get. In real life, guys can`t be that kinda wildcard, law-breaker, rebel-type, but there`s something in guys that WANTS to be that. Look at Sean Connery, Al Pacino, John Wayne, ALL the movie heroes. Those guys are in EVERY GUY, and games like GTA let them be that way in a constructive way instead of a destructive way. So I`d say let him play, and if he wants to get a little bit "James Bond" in daily life, too? Let him, it`s FUN!
You have to give a little and take a little, and video games are like the new sports, or the new wars. Men don`t have to go out and kill Carthaginians or wooly mammoths, at least let them kill Officer Tenpenny

"Good, I`d like to see this game pulled from the shelves. Rockstar makes quality games, but with horrifically desensitizing content. It`s developers like rockstar that are going to ruin the youth of america."

It`s an 18 game (in the UK), its not designed for anyone under 18 to play so that argument is void. If parents allow their child to play the game that has nothing to do with Rockstar or the games industry which has quite clearly made a game for over 18s.

WTFgirl, you still use IE ? Pffff, that`s whats wrong.

Also: GTA rocks, and can understand why one would do such a thing.

And video games have pretty much nothing to do with people becoming violent. Unless the game makes them mentally ill then video games are innocent.

I am 15. I have played this game.

It is nowhere near as bad as manhunt, but even manhunt isn`t that bad, as manhunt is about the primary human instinct - survival.
If I want to shoot somebody, then I will shoot somebody, and thats my fault, not violent video games.

Aye, and games have no proven links to real life violence. If you have just commented something along the lines of "OMG This game is violent it makes people do bad things", then you are clearly an idiot, with the IQ of a doorstop.

I HAVE researched into this pretty in depth for coursework, and there aren`t any studies that that show any correlation between crime, and violent video games, or for that matter any proof that violent video games cause the player much more frustration than a sports game.

The media tend to exagerrate things, and your small minds just agree to go along with what they say.

If you are going to try and say that there is a correlation between crime and violent video games, then message me on myspace (available on my profile)
Why does GTA allways get picked on? A lot of it is pretty comical.

Whadya mean cartriges? It`s only out on PS3 and X360!

But either way, the news can feck off. I love GTA IV and yet I don`t stab people and steal cars.

Also, Gregoryn95, I am none of those types of people. I have a social life and have not been traumatised by a muthafeck`n video game.

It`s not down to the game, it`s down to the retards that take it seriously and think that`s the way to behave.

this is kinda dumb. i can understand stealing it, cos of all the hype its been getting, but anyone who actually re-enacts something from the game or does something stupid because of it must be completely retarded not to know that IT`S ONLY A FREAKIN GAME!

too true - look at call of duty 4 - i love that game! i havnt played gta4 but some of my friends have and they havnt gone all homicidal maniac on us yet, even though some of them are under 18 and so shouldnt technically have the game and the media is obviously wrong as our tiny undeveloped minds have not yet cracked and made us put everyone we know through a blender and spray the resulting mess on the nearest wall.
    *deep breath in*
    there we go, rant over.

thats so dumb. How is his crime like the game, just because he stole something from a store and was hostile? that means every thief is acting like someone in GTA. So stupid to blame a game for that lol. Ignorance.
