This is all my parents talk about is how this generation did nothing creative they only copied some other generations idea. Most of which i agree, yet i still feel like every generation copies from a previous one. But whatever i try to be different as possible yet not so different that no one will talk to me. : /

Well I wholeheartedly agree that this article is crap.

You can`t pigeon-hole an entire generation while you`re right in the middle of it. Did everybody look at grunge at the time it was happening and see it as this huge movement and defining moment in music history? At the time it was greasy haired flannel-wearing angsty drug addicts.

All this idolization of past generation is because of HINDSIGHT. I do agree that so far Gen Y looks about as impactful as a bag of dirt, but there`s always something happening and changing, so shut up and contribute.

    1. Music- Generation X- 1965-1982. They lived through the 60s and 70s. Most even liked that. While a lot of generation y music sucks, its not as bad.
2.Movies- Hate or love Mel Gibson, his movies are great. Passion, Apocalypto (fav movie). Then there is 300, and pursuit of happyness in the same year. Schlinder`s list, etc.
I dont know when to count some of these movies like pulp fiction. But you cant base generation y movies based on the past 2 years.

also... didn`t gen X bring up Brittney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Eminem, Paris Hilton, 50 Cent, and every boyband that ever existed?

although, i`ll have to admit they did give the greatest cartoons ever, yet at the same time, those in the same generation caused the death to most of them (Ren and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead, Rocko`s Modern Life, etc.)

the video game panics also came up thanks to the Gen X`ers believing Doom killed kids in Columbine (oooo alliteration).

yeah, Gen X also got Gen Y licked in movies.

damn, and the silent generation had to sit down and take it like a bitch, eh?

The movie part was pretty much spot on. Though I think films such as Napoleon Dynamite will be appreciated years from now. Wait... didn`t that film basically take place in the 80`s... D`OH!

I agree with the spot about reality TV... but we did have American Idol and Survivor. Though they are not loved by everyone, they have change the way television works.

In the music category, they did not look at the broad picture. Though currently it is looked at as a joke amongst our generation... I think the whole "emo" thing has made some cultural contributions that really are not all that bad. Some of the music that has come out of this era is really good at times.

Really the producers of such things are the ones that should be to blame. Generation Y just sucks it all in and goes with it. If they were introduced to something else from the start, wouldn`t they (I guess I should include myself too..) follow that too? So technically.. like LleetLlama said, Generation X has made our things and when Generation Z(?) comes into play, that would be Y`s doing.

Regardless, the things Generation Y enjoys will come into play as a cultural thing as did all the others.

Let`s compare two generations Generation X vs, Baby Boom generation.

Compared to The Baby Boom Generation, Generation X was rather boring also. I mean the Baby Boom Generation was the first one raised with Television, They had JFK Sr. Martin Luther King Jr. The first Man on the moon. Most of what we take for granted, the Baby Boom generation was there to experience it first hand.

    Media Wise
They had Elvis, Marilyn Monroe (mispelled her name I know, sorry) James Dean.

They had movies like A reble without a cause, Easy Rider.

Baby Boomers had The Beatles for Goodness sakes.

    Generation X
We`ve had the invention of The Internet (created by Al Gore lol), we`ve had the fall of the berlin Wall, we`ve had the fall of the Twin Towers, We had (in a way) the invention of Bubble Gum Pop Bands and Grunge. Internet. To me, nothing can compare to the Baby Boom Generation.

p.s. Sorry about the previous post, my cat got on the keyboard while I was typing. and hit enter.

i guess i don`t really see the point in it, that`s all. its dumb to categorize people that way...

    I`m so sick of this.
Every generation thinks that theirs is going to result in the end of the world, that theirs is the worst, and that their children are growing up as a waste of skin.
I agree with Boadicea in that it`s hindsight which gives us the appreciation of each generation.

I HIGHLY disagree with this article...
Like Boadicea said, you can`t generalize a generation that is still ongoing. Hell, half of Gen-Y`s aren`t even 20 yet! According to anthropologists, the 80`s and 90`s were actually cultural dips in the United States. Gen-Y is supposedly the "Saving Grace" for the culture-less rut we are in RIGHT NOW...

And something that EVERYONE needs to correct is the differentiation between culture that HAPPENED during a generation, and culture that was MADE BY a generation. PLEASE!

#1 author fails to define exactly what criteria constitute a culture. An apathetic culture is still a culture, that’s my contention number one. #2 What exactly did Gen X do that was so grand as to put them on a pedestal to make them judge and jury to the generation that THEY raised? If anything that fact that we`re supposedly so “culture-less” is more of an insult to Gen X than it is to us. #3 The only reason our culture doesn’t seem to have an impact like theirs is because due to the internet we’ve become a world culture. Contention #4 The people producing the shows and music that the author points out as being copy-cat and meaningless are produced mainly by people from GASP! Gen X! I guess what I`m trying to say is that this author lumps an entire group of people together before our generation is even done and then condemns us for consuming the poo that our predecessors(Gen X) are dishing out to us on a daily basis! I call a foul on this one.

I`d like to remind all you pompous "Gen Yers" that the 70s and 80s also produced their fair share of horrible horrible music/movies/TV shows. There are plenty of good things about current culture, but you`re not going to find them in the Top 40 charts or box-office hits. Just like you wouldn`t in the 80s.

Isn`t it all about preference and opinion? Factors that, when compared against the larger picture, hold absolutely no merit in the long run?

It`s like when customers come into my store and ask:

    "What game is the best?"

There is no "best game", it`s all about what you like and what you don`t.

I think the point that Generation X is actually creating most of the current culture needs to be emphasised. For eg. DiePSPolice - you can bet that it was someone between the age of 30 -50 that came up with Pokemon and Dragonball Z, not a teenager from Generation Y. And lets face it when you`re a kid you`ll latch on to pretty much anything if it`s advertised well enough. Furthermore, Simon Cowell and such middle aged cronies are largely responsible for our admittedly rather rubbish music scene. Likewise, current film makers. We need at least another 10 years before you see the actual input of those born after 1981.

There is one thing in this article that I find compelling, "[Gen Y are the most marketed to generation ever (not only do they accept it, they relish in it)".

Apart from that, garbage. Gen Y had its stuff, lets not write off the whole generation.

I do worry about recent movies though, it seems nothing is worth making unless its a sequel, a revival of an old franchise, a spoof, or a comic book conversion.

Firstly, the author has a limited view of culture. Much of culture evolves from sub-culture, not the dominant culture. He uses the example of grunge, which developed from a sub-culture in a specific geographical location (Seattle). You cannot compare that with the likes of fallout boy who are hopelessly mainstream. A more accurate comparison would perhaps be fallout boy with bon jovi.

The problem with the rise of mass media in the past 15 years is that it has made it harder for a genuine sub-culture to exist and develop, as it is suddenly possible for it to appear worldwide. Thus the cultural motif of Gen Y (or generation neXt as Pepsi tried to call us) is dominated by short lived fads, see for example the tiny lifespan of internet memes.

Secondly, as people have already observed, we are really starting to see the influence of gen y-ers in our culture. It is unfair to criticize a culture in its infancy.

"Hey I know! I`ll write a blog about the worst parts of the current culture, and compare them to the best parts of the culture of two decades ago. And then I`ll complain about it! Brilliant!"

I was thinking the same thing when I read it. I also agree that Gen Y seems to be less cultured because we grew up in the technology boom, being exposed to technology from the start. Because of that, our culture is more international and spread out, rather than concentrated in one country.

Each generation has its flaws and strong points, and each one is defined not only by the people in it, but by the circumstances around it. The Baby-Boomers had the Cold War height of the Cold War which really pushed them together. Gen X Fought back against that, in order to define who they were. And now, Gen Y is forced to make their generation based on a situation of fear (war on terror, etc). This means Gen Y is gonna be a huge backlash against that, and its just beginning, We`ll see where it go

That was one of the most ignorant articles i`ve ever read. You can`t define the personality of a whole culture while it`s still going through its development stages, that would be like trying to sum up the manliness of a ten year old boy. The article was badly written also, some bits of it didn`t make much sense.
And i think that a few of the current bands will survive over the few next decades, Definitely not the rap scene, though. just because "emo" is a pejorative word does not mean that the genre lacks talent, and the mainstream music we all hear isn`t the only music being played. Actually, it could have to do with the mainstream music, we`ll still be the same people as we get older, and it`s not necessarily the sound of the band that lives on, it`s the memory, the beatles could have been the most poo/mainstream band on the market, and the only reason we grow fond while thinking of them is because that generations young people were just as susceptible as this generat

This article is rather retarded, the maximum age of anybody (at this point in time) in "Generation Y" is the age of 27. Generation Y is just NOW at the cusp of creating things and making an impact on the world. So, comparing one generation that`s established a bunch of things to a generation who is just now at the point that the previous generation just started creating things... is kind of stupid. It makes about as much sense as "Generation Y" complaining that "Generation Z" hasn`t done anything with their lives.

It really is amazing. Gen Y`s started being born in 82 that`s not that far from the cutoff of Xer`s (81) and yet the differences are sometimes astounding. Look here at iambored. The age range of 18-29 technically meshes X and Y and yet the comments are sometimes on completely different sides.

Alright, seriously now, I am part of Gen Y, and just because we have our own trends and styles, doesn`t mean that we don`t have a future. Generations change, we are differen`t then the previous generation, they were differen `t then their predecessors, and so on and so forth. Its life, life changes, people change, styles change, GET OVER IT.

We dress different then Gen X, we talk different, we listen to different music. So what.

The 80`s listened to differen`t music then the 70`s. OH GOD! does that mean that they failed and have no future! OH NO!

Well, I have to go continue on my journy to ruin the economy now. bye bye

ok. first off, reality tv sucks no matter what. let`s just get that out of the way.
second, the author doesn`t site ANY other music besides FOB. now, as far as mainstream bands go, they`re not bad. but the best bands are underground. go to a club. go to those are the best artists of gen y.
third, i concede that they have us beat in movies, but it`s not NEARLY as bad as what he said. yes they have kevin smith (the best movie maker in history as far as i`m concerned) but the "scary movie" and "meet the spartans" and all the other bullsh*t movies like them are not, and never will be our best.
finally, i know he doesn`t list regular tv (because in THAT category, we kick their ass) but the mere fact that we have "Home Movies" and "Scrubs" should be a win for us, hands down.

    Wait, I don`t get it...
I`m not even out of high-school and yet I should be ashamed for not contributing enough to our culture?
I don`t even like reality television or Fallout Boy (Fall Out Boy?)!
I honestly feel discriminated against... `-`

I dont like half the poo he said that my "Generation" (Gen Y) likes, i dont like half the poo he said Generation X likes either. drat off and let me enjoy my life. Im a hardworking 21 year old, i dont drink or smoke often, I have 2 jobs and Im doing very well in my field. Screw this dude. Everyone born after 1981, are you serious, PSH!

I truely despise this generation and the people who continue to push the same old stuff at people year after year. I am part of Gen Y yet i have to agree that this generation is full of lazy, spoiled brats that get more and more roostery as the generation gets older. I for one feel as though America has become a less livable place due to these brainless morons that hold onto popular trends to try and find a reason for their own ignorance.

Every generation has it`s goods and bads.

I, as a Gen Y-er can do the same thing.

    The Shins vs. Millie Vanillie.

Garden State vs. Howard the Duck

    Bay Watch vs. The Office

    See? Easy.

And don`t give us crap about how we`ve "copied" everything.
See the movies "Sylvia Scarlette" (1935), "Just One Of The Guys" (1985), "She`s the Man" (2006).
All movies are romantic comedies which include women dressing as men to achieve a greater good in their own lives.

Copying happens in every generation. No generation is "better" than another.

We have a culture. It`s just a crappy one. And it`s really not born after 1981. It`s born in the 90s. There`s X, Y, W(for whine, which we do way too much.), and Z, the 8 year olds of today.

Seemingly by the argumentation of the article it appears that they judge culture of a generation by the movies and bands that pop up during it, at which point it becomes obvious that the culture is technically made by the generation before. Essentially, Gen X brought up Gen Y so any faults with Gen Y originated from Gen X, so the only conclusion that can be drawn is that everyone hates young people.

And it`s true too. This whole culture thing has no effect on Generation X. This article is merely in place to make them look good and us look bad, as if they have to validate themselves. People just like to pick on the younger generation because it`s easy. It`s like inter-generation bullying. And so in the end it`s just a vicious circle because each generation ends up being as bad as the last one, but no one likes to let on.

Yes, most of generation Y is sh*t in regard to music, movies, television, and general attitude; thus, culture. To this point, the 80s and early 90s were the best.

Generation Y hasn`t produced anything? Bull-crap. EVERY generation has. You just have to look. So let me try and help those of you who didn`t look deep enough.
Music: Techno. Not your thing maybe, but it is primarily a Gen Y creation.
Movies: Gen Y isn`t old enough (for the most part) to start making big block-buster movies. Be patient. The latest we have are in the 20`s. Most film makers hit big around their 40`s. Besides, watch th documentary channels much? Some good stuff from Gen Y.
Reality Television: Sucks. Period. Gen X or Gen Y. It ALL SUCKED. Reality television is just crap on a stick. Period.

So thats it? ends there? Oh-ho! What about video games? Popularized by Gen Y. The internet? owes most of it`s popularity to... you guessed it.. Gen Y. and so on and so on blah blah lol.
