Thanks, itsallfake. I wanted to expand more on my first post, but you`ve got all the facts already. I don`t know if it`s been mentioned, but Phelp`s law firm takes on the cases levied against the church pro bono, and is given substantial legal grants from the state and federal government for doing so.

Nazis "demonstrated" on jewish memorials and spit on their graves and yelled "they would to "it" again"! (recently happened in Europe)

Actions like this are not right, and that was my point. There are right times and places for everything, even for protesting - (if you want to call it protesting).

I wasnt discussing laws or constitutions with anyone, but I DO know the "real" problem.

A lot of comments in here, are personal opinions of the way people feel about these "situations" and your only answer to this is: "well, they have the right to do so...". Wonderful...

And yes, you are right saying people should act, and not only whine about it. That was also what I meant, stating "I think its sad no one could yet succesfully stop their actions ".

What do my comments have to do with me trying to take power of their "God-given rights`?

So you are really saying, I have no right to judge "what accurs in these situations"? (regardless of the fact that I am also American...)
So I also do not have the right to freely say that what WBC is doing is BS and that it`s terrible nobody could/has yet succesfully act against their actions protesting at funerals?!

Again, it`s all spelled out clearly. They have the right. If you have a problem with it, get an amendment passed. If not, you`re obviously not interested in it enough to try. (Aware you are not American, but for others.)

It`s when we start interpreting it as we want it to be read that we run into problems. If you want to be wishy-washy about it and use "common sense" to warp its meaning it entirely loses its power. It is more than obvious that it IS your opinion (and many others`), but AGAIN, that does not give you power over their God-given rights. You are not better than they, and you have (especially as a non-American) NO right to judge what should occur in these situations.

I am trying to make the whole think completely neutral. I agree that it is disgusting what they do at these funerals, but I am also trying to establish that it is completely within their rights to do so. Anyone who will sit by and commend the infringement of said rights will have a good dose of ka

ClearSky87-"people who smoke do so where ever they want because of their freedom to do so"? Uh, hello? I dont know about the rest of the smokers on hear but that is NOT the reason I started. I choose to smoke, however I did not choose to continue to do it just to push my freedom to do so. Its a drug. BIG DIFFERENCE!In my state, you cannot just smoke anyplace you choose or use some delusion of the constitution to try it either. If I do, I get fined and/or go to jail. Those motha F&^%ers should have the same fate. This country stands for many people of many backrounds grouping together to live free. Not people thinking they can push their belifes on others and threating them with hell. I cannot live under the delusion that because one person makes a choice to love the same sex, they will go to hell yet sickos that hurt/rape kids can ask for forgiveness in their last hour and get it?WBC sucks. You know if we ever protested one of their funerals it would be a totally differ

I sooo wish they went to a mafia family`s funeral. They start chanting that soldiers/"fags" should die and god made it happen, and the mafia just all take out their guns and cap their asses. Other then that, if God really hated gays, he`d "smite" them whenever he wanted instead of sending 150 to funerals to piss off normal people.

people constantly abuse the constitution.

people believe they should be allowed to smoke where ever they want because in the name of "freedom", but can`t because it hinders the freedom of others

i believe in freedom...but not at the expense of someone else

the WBC has freedom of speech, but these people also have the right to grieve without being blindsided by this group`s message of hate

the WBC constantly abuses the rights of others...so dont bitch to me about how people supposedly abused theirs

sqdp:They way you put the constition makes it not worth more than toilet paper. I never said I dont "like" the constition :-D.

Almost every country has there own constition, but usually there are laws/admenments, to prevent misuse of what stands in it and that is clearly whats missing here. (In the country I live, it is against the law to protest at funerals etc.) But then again that also was not the point of my first comment.

And no, this does not only have to do with MY personal opinion. It`s all about plain common sense.

oh, they also did NOT receive police escort out of the area. the police were there to ensure violence did not come from the situation, they basically ran off to their van and left. ONE arrest was made, he stole one of their signs and ran while one of the church people was yelling "im going to drating kill you"

It my opinion take it for what you will it really appears they are escorting them because the other crowd is getting out of control. and it appears that one of the church members was speaking to the officer. From the video we can`t really tell what led to what with the police line getting involved. If it was an unasked for escort then I will concede the argument to you. But you are giving a very libertarian view. I don`t mean this as an insult but if we were to follow the letter of the law in all occasions, it would lead to abridging of many more rights. We wouldn`t be able to defend ourselves due to the letter of the law states that you kill or assault, you go to jail. It`s when you begin following the spirit of the law that you lend yourself to the rights of self defense and the rights given to us under the second amendment . Because I don`t know too many gun owners who are in a "Well regulated militia"

awesome!! this my school and i was literally 10 feet from that camera. if you guys want a little back story...

3 of our students died in a fire, the day of their funeral, wbc came to show us that they were "the bastards and whores of america". the video doesnt show it, but many of the students present were friends of those lost in the fires and were in tears. wbc also picketed their funerals.

they had 1 hour scheduled for picketing, the overwhelming turn out from UW-Stout students convinced them to leave.

more info on the deaths of the 3 students (http://www.uwstout.edu/deaths/)

Upsetting? The idea that the government can prohibit you from protesting was obviously enough of a problem to be included in the Constitution 200+ years ago. I`d say, if you don`t like the Constitution, get out of America; but you`re already in Europe...

And what I meant by White House toilet paper is the fact that the Constitution was put in place to RESTRICT and LIMIT the Federal Government. It was written to keep the Feds from infringing upon our "God-given rights." Unfortunately, people have let the Feds get away with ignoring these rights by allowing the income tax, Executive Orders, etc.

It goes back to your PERSONAL opinion and feelings , and you wanting them to affect these people and their rights. That is exactly what it is, and don`t play off like it`s not just because "others" feel the same way.

No, I never said I was against of what they are saying, that was not the point and I surely don`t care about what people believe in and if they want to protest, but I am against the time and place WBC is "spreading their beliefs"...
WBC should not have the right to do so. And yes, I do think it is cruel and insane to bother a funeral!

And of course, the fact that you are right in saying "these people DO have an undeniable right granted by "GOD" as established in the First Amendment of the Constitution" upsets me (and others).

franksuicide: They were literally taken away from the area. They were escorted by police, not for their own protection from what I see... I wouldn`t blame them one bit if they did sue, and I hope they win. Then maybe some people will wisen up to the fact that the Constitution is more than White House toilet paper.

chrisl1707: Unfortunately, you`re wrong. This is entirely about you and the majority of people disagreeing with what these people are saying/doing. Proof`s in the pudding when you say it`s "cruel and insane." Here in America, we established the Constitution so that EVERYONE could peacefully protest, not just the ones who were `correct.` "Cruel and insane" or not, these people DO have an undeniable right granted by "GOD" as established in the First Amendment of the Constitution. NOBODY, yes, not even you all the way from Europe, can take away the rights they were born with. That`s just how it works.

And like I said. If you think this is a big deal, check out the "Executive Orders" being passed, or the fact that the Feds have declared the Constitution "Null & Void." There`s your REAL problem, not some people holding up signs.

This has nothing to do about believing in what they are saying, but acting against insane and cruel people and their insane and cruel actions. You wrote “well, they have the right to do so”…! Every person with the slightest spark of common sense knows that what WBC is doing is wrong and cruel! And it is really sad to hear, that no one was or probally is able to successfully stop what they are doing. I think the police escort was more for there own protection. Much like down here in Texas when the klan have their little get together at the court house they always have a police escort to protect them from any possible radical counter-protesters. I`m really not seeing where the unconstitutional part comes from.

There`s no denying that they are legally using the constitution to gain what they want, attention, money, whatever. However, they should not be allowed to spread hate speach, regardless of their 1st ammendment rights. If the things they say are hurtful and cause direct harm (emotional or physical), then they can be prosecuted on charges of defamation. And I don`t think they would have much of a case once it got to the supreme court...

Sqdp: While I do believe the Constitution, and the First Amendment are the most important documents any American should know and understand. And while Voltaire had it right with his "Though I do not agree with what you say...." We as a country have allowed the SCoTUS, to run rampant with Many cases that abridge this right. So while it is a travesty that people would rather shut out the unpopular views instead of taking them head on. I believe it is more American to go out there and counter-protest, then it is to sit around and do nothing. It is only when the people of this country realize that the wool is being pulled over their eyes will they be able to fully grasp what liberties and rights are daily being shrunken and sometimes outright destroyed.

For the record: one of my friends died in Iraq. I worked security for his funeral, and part of my job was to make sure the WBC was kept across the street. So yes, I do know what it`s like to have a loved one`s funeral protested by them, and it was made a lot harder with my having to watch them for security.

That does not change the fact that they have every right to do it. If you start singling them out because you do not believe what they are saying, who`s next?

As for exploitation of the Constitution, consider the Federal Government your #1 Exploiter. If you can`t see that, and you are all ready to pounce on WBC, we`ve got a fundamental problem.

They are constitution exploiters. Using the freedom of speech and religion, they find the most controversial and radical means of expressing those protected freedoms. That way when someone does try to suppress their freedom, they go after them using the courts. Yes they have the right to say what they want, and there is nothing we can legally do about it. This my friends is known as exploitation. Phelps and WBC are nothing more than exploiters of the constitution. The only way to legally put a stop to their exploitation would be for the media to stop covering them OR for all media outlets to do investigative reporting on the practices and expose them for the fraud and constitution exploiter that they are. Either ignore them or expose and humiliate them, but stop giving them the type of press coverage that they want. By watching and posting stuff like this only gives them motivation to continue.

Actually, Tekno, they ARE more than attention whores. They are the best running scam in American history. They are a money making orginization that hides behind the constitution for protection. Phelps is a lawyer and will sue anyone who "violates his constitutional rights" and because he and his family ARE a church, using all of that money for themselves is "tithing" and I`m fairly sure it can`t be taxed. (I`m not sure, I haven`t looked into those laws. If you know for sure, please say so.) It`s sick, and needs to be revealed.
I`m sure the only reason his family agrees to do this is because they know they get all the money when the old windbag dies.
As for the small chance they actually DO believe this stuff, God help them. No where in the bible does it say that God hates anyone. In fact, it clearly ststes that God loves everyone no matter what. Even people like Phelps and his little cult.

Here in Topeka, we just passed legislation that says you must stay a certain distance away from funerals when picketing. It sickens me what wbc does, and i hate to live in the same town that they do. I can only hope that the family dies off soon. I believe in freedom of speech. They can say what they want, but my freedom of speech says i hope they eat poo and die, and burn forever.

Cashcleaner is the only person here who is remotely on the right track. Phelps is a lawyer and a "preacher". The entire WBC is a scam to the highest degree. This is a church started by a lawyer? Here`s exactly what it is and how we as society should deal with it. This "church" was form under the guise of christianity for several reasons: 1 - because starting a christian church would not be questioned or investigated for tax fraud. 2 - Using christianity as the platform for their Con allows them to hide behind the reputation and strength of christianity when confronted, while at the same time smearing that reputation. They take extreme, radical and controversial actions in order to bait people into breaking the law for the sole purpose of bringing litigation against them...

so really.. lets all start a collection.. if we can get a petition online then why not have a million or so people donate a dollar.. then we pay some random "cleaner" to take out the wbc.. i mean can the government put a million people in jail for that.. we could at least make history and set a new precedence for the legal system.

I know the WBC act like total d#ckwads and protest almost everything people usually stand for or respect but it would put some substance in the context of this story.

but u may b right in that not everybody there knew those kids, but they felt that if they did know them, they wouldn`t want somebody calling then fags

also, at what point did we forget that freedom of speech also comes with responsibility?

u can`t yell fire in a crowded theater...

do u think i could just stand on the sidewalk by someones house every day and yell that they are a fag and hold up signs saying god doesn`t love them?

And, of course, everyone manages to forget why anyone was there in the first place. Three kids had to die for all of this to happen? Pretty sad if you ask me.

Do I think all those WBC people are asswipes? Of course I do! But it doesn`t change the fact that this whole "demonstration" had absolutely nothing to do with it. It just gave a bunch of people a chance to throw themselves into a cause that they don`t really understand in order to feel better about themselves, irregardless of the fact that 3 students are dead.

it all comes down to one thing...
if your family dies in a horrible accident, then some asshat gets in your face and mocks u saying ur family is in hell and we couldn`t be happier...
could you really not beat the smile off their face?

sure they have a right to free speech...but at what point do we say this is just a hate group who taunt those trying to grieve
they do not debate, they don`t argue for their beliefs...ur just a faggot who deserves to die

i don`t know how much more abuse people can take...i think that these people won`t stop believing their idiotic ideals, which is fine, but keep it in ur church
i hope eventually the WBC will no longer protest because every time they do they just get protested right back with a $hit ton more people

They protest at funerals and other high-emotion situations. They can say whatever they want, though I may disagree wholeheartedly with what they believe, but ever heard of respect for other human beings? They`re trying to incite riots. There`s no way they could be doing that and not have the intention of hurting others emotionally as much as possible. They should leave grieving people alone, and say it elsewhere.
Saying we`ve lost our way simply because we think people deserve respect is an exaggeration of the situation. They can say what they want to say, just do it in a less harmful way, like not at a funeral .

I think the students had every right to run them off. And, with the exception of those frat jerks about halfway through, they did it without hurting anyone. The chants of "GO HOME" were all that was really necessary.

In a sense, we need groups like the WBC to enhance our own solidarity. When they came to my campus a few years ago to protest our theatre`s production of The Laramie Project, all the religious groups on campus, from right-wing Christian to new age rallied together to counter the Phelp`s clan presence. It was a wonderful show of what people united can do. Without the WBC, it never would have happened.

I disagree...

sqdp gets it.

The fact that the WBC is allowed to, within the guidelines of free speech and rule of law, broadcast their, shall we say, er....idiotic beliefs, means that we here can all see it in plain view.

We can then debate and discuss our own viewpoints, and determine to what extent their views coincide with the popular viewpoint....at least within the IAB community.

It does when they`re doing things that could be regarded as harmful to society, or with the intent to incite a riot. I think that I can fairly safely say that their protests fall into both of those categories.

Odeed, While I agree with a couple of things you said.. the wanting attention.. the expectation of this sort of reaction from people.. I do think that this "snuffing out" approach of their protests could very well deter them.. Trouble is, it`s going to have to keep happening.. People are going to have to be right on top of that.. You know, Anonymous spends a lot of time protesting scientology.. It`d have a really easy time keeping track of one little weirdo cult..

People need to be careful though.. You need to counteract hate with peace.. The crowd had it right when all they were yelling was "GO HOME" .. No threats, no insults.. just a clear simple message..

And just about 13 miles away from topeka is the town of Stull, Kansas where the stull cemetery is at and some say it has a gateway to hell in it.

I really doubt that this protest is going to make any difference to the people of the WBC. Truly, they beleive that they are the bringers of truth, and that they are enlightened ones, they also expect this reaction. Paying attention to them is not going to make any difference. They are like the school bully, they crave this sort of `ownage`, it makes them feel powerful, and like they are messengers of the truth. Fred Phelps Is Insane, pissing him off is not going to change anything, it will just make things worse.

I have an honest question for anyone who it applies to (a.k.a. Topeka-area residents)?

Does anyone from Topeka or the Topeka-area get questions about WBC when out of town? Does anybody get mistakenly identified as one of these idiots?

I ask this because I am from Waco, a city of similar size and metro area. Even 15 years later, when I go outside the southwest, people still ask me if I am a Davidian, if I knew Koresh, and some even go as far as to cuss me out. I usually try to brush it aside, though some morons have tested me.

Granted, Westboro hasn`t had a single incident as tragic and stunning (in a bad way) as what happened in Elk, Texas, and I hope that Topekans haven`t had to deal with the crap I have. I also hope that they are proud of their city, just as I still am.

Just wondering though.

Wow, I can`t believe how many places I`ve seen this video today. This anti-protest took place less than 24 hours ago at the University of Wisconsin-Stout (where I go to college). The reason the protest took place is because three students recently died in a house fire. The Westboro Church members came here to picket and say that God caused the fire because the kids deserved to die. Our campus is very LGBT friendly, which is probably why these three kids were singled out. After this, the Westboro Church went to at least one of the funerals, I don`t know about the other two.

Protest the deaths of students?

I probably don`t understand the grammar in this, how do you protest an irreversible action after it already happened?

Anyways, it probably took a lot to gather all those students at that time.

Rev. Phelps and his ilk are charlatans and frauds. Their congregation is not affiliated with any known Baptist institution or association and is believed to have a following of between 70 and 150 members, many of whom are related to Fred Phelps. Instead of having a legitimate theological motivation, the primary aim of the group is to protest in accordance to their first amendment rights and bring litigation to anyone or any group that disrupts those protests.

What many people don`t understand is that Phelps runs a charted law firm and brings legal action against almost anyone who denies them their rights of free speech or speaks falsely about their organisation. In the past decade alone, Phelps and Co. have made a small fortune in this manner. Any member of the media who makes even the smallest misquote or gives a negative opinion about Phelps and the church are immediately slapped with litigation.

Like I`ve said before, it really pisses me off when these people act like they represent Christians as a whole. I really don`t think being hateful like that is a good way to represent Christ`s love at all. God doesn`t hate people. Even if they do happen to disagree with something, they`re not going to convince anyone of their side by telling them that they`re going to Hell.
If you disagree with someone, just talk to them. People will listen to reason if it`s in a civil context and not randomly speaking out against random deaths that have nothing to do with your point.
