>afterwards nothing was ever heard of it

I wouldn`t say that. You can see elements of the Arrow in every US supersonic fighter plane built afterwards.

yep, the US government bought all the rights to this project & then afterwards nothing was ever heard of it again...suspicious..

Avro Arrow was different - it was ahead of it`s time and blazed a trail for all the supersonic fighters that followed. That was win, this saucer was fail. It was based on the idea that the huge numbers of "UFO" sightings from the `40`s and `50`s had some truth to them and the Nazis (seriously) had developed a secret flying saucer that could out-perform a conventional airplane. All B.S, of course, but somebody had to go through the motions of experimenting with the saucer-shaped aircraft.

*note, I`m talking about the Avro Arrow, the plane, not that thing, which is still pretty cool

shuut dissing the original Avro guys!! my grandfather helped make it. and actually, the only reason it was scrapped was because it was so different looking from all other plans, and no one liked the change.

This was on bbc4 the other day, it turns out the american government bought the technology and then buried it, and yea its more like a hovercraft but still some aspects are thought to have been used in further U.s government projects. although what i have no idea >_< hoovers? hand dryers? hair dryers?

I bet this was supposed to be cleared from existence the same way Avro`s Arrow was.
As a Canadian, the Avro Arrow story is one thing that really pisses me off. :(

Boo-urns!!

Music wasn`t from the 50`s. Would have been interesting to hear the original dialogue?

This was just a prototype.

The idea was to have about 8 turbofan engines eventually, and then this thing would be able quickly vector in any direction.

One of the plans called for a large circular blade around the circumference. The idea being that once it was fast and manouverable enough, it could zip up to a bomber airplane, and using its saw, cut the enemy plane in half before the enemy knew what hit them.

Of course, the backup plan was the enemy would see it, and die laughing.

Failed experiment, and absolutely not fake. I saw it on the History Channel, and despite the efficacy of their explanation, I can`t for the life of me see why we`d ever need one. Especially in this day and age.

Fine, canadians can create our hovercraft but we still get to start the wars.

>We could add it to the three tanks
>and five copters we have!

Huh. I`ll be damned. As an American I keep more firepower than that in my garage - just in case the commies get out of hand, or terrorists try to jump in the middle of my sh¡t or something.

This project was scrapped before major computer advances, I bet if they picked it up now with the computer power we have they could make it. But there wouldn`t really be a point to it, since its does the same thing as a helicopter.

Hang on a second!

Why develop a saucer shaped aircraft...unless your reverse engeering it from a crashed flying saucer?

Seriously though..whats the point?

Uh, I think I heard of it mentioned, but the project failed because it can only raise up to only a few feet, and was very difficult to manuever.
