I just think that everyone has a purpose in life. Even terminally ill patients have something to fulfill in the limited time they have. Life isn`t meaningless; otherwise, why don`t we all kill ourselves now?

I don`t know. I think that the right to off oneself is a debatable one at best. However I do believe that people who are in pain/terminally ill and also have complete control of their faculties should be allowed to commit suicide.

If people have a terminal illness and are still well in the mind, There should be nothing the church or government should be able to do if you and your doctor agree that this is a viable option.

The government and church need to mind their own business... stop protecting the people that don`t want to be protected.

>We were never given a say about being brought INto the world

Ohhhhhh, how much I hate this argument... That there was someone to ask, aha. And that someone would agree :-)

IMHO, the very idea of regulating suicide (euthanasia) in legislative way is not effective. As anything that concerns moral values and beliefs, arranging one`s or one intimate`s death should be a matter of personal choice. However, legilizing (and promoting) an opportunity of suicide for all, like in Futurama, wouldn`t be much fun: just remember how often you hated life around you (even if the reasons were ridiculous and the moments of despair were short). What, allowing isn`t pushing? Ha.
*Although I`m pretty sure a normal society won`t come to suicide booths... well, it actually will, but it will understand its mistake soon :-)*

Oh, and the guy has just no scientific thinking. Hasn`t he been told that a human house is full of lethal objects? He must live in heaven.

In my gerontology class we are actually talking about euthenasia right now. It`s really a touchy subject. Some people think we have a right to die, some do not. It`s hard to tell. I think it`s a good idea.

If a person is going to die a terrible death from a terminal illness why not let them have the choice ahead of time instead of having to suffer for however much longer??

lol futurama flashback ^_^

but seriosly, it`s quite the machine that should be availible to anyone who is terminally ill and hates it.

Coincidentally enough, Futurama predicted that something like this would exist by 2008.

"Suicide is legal, you can`t go to jail for killing yourself."

Correct. But you CAN go to jail for helping someone commit suicide. Or, if you fail to kill yourself.

And, to the people who say Christians wouldn`t let people suffer - they believe only God has the right to take away a life. Therefore, God is making them suffer as a `test`.

As for the machine... it doesn`t cover any loopholes. A doctor is made to take an oath when they qualify, which states that they must always aim to save the life of a patient. Sitting back and watching someone use the machine would break that oath. I`m not sure if it`s the same in Germany, but I assume it is. So this video fails miserably.

"Or the old fashioned Guillotine, which is supposedly painless."

Not at all, there are many accounts of the head surviving up to five seconds after decapitation.

Uhm. That`s already been done. I`m pretty sure some other german guy had invented a suicide machine.

I completely agree with people wanting to end their lives.
We were never given a say about being brought INto the world, so we should have a say when we can leave. Especially when people ahve no point to life eg. paralysis, 100%burns.

That`s just wrong.

If you want to die, blow your brains out. Or jump off a hotel building. Or the old fashioned Guillotine, which is supposedly painless.

Sooo...people can eat anything they want and get diabetes and be morbidly obese and die, but to want to end your life because you`re suffering? OUTRAGE!

I think it`s sort of weird but funny that they asked a churchman about his opinion because religion isn`t that important in germany and expecially not in german politics. clear evidence that it was an american news report. haha

the accent was pathetic an I actually feel embarrassed(as I always am when germans speak english like that). It`s not like he couldn`t have a better pronunciation, he`s just too lazy.

actual topic: I think it`s a good thing they hopefully found a grey zone for active euthanasia. it solves a lot of legal problems if this was the one and only legal way of helping others to end their lives.

kenny f says: "all suicide is legal, you can`t go to jail for killing yourself" -- pretty funny, kenny!! I like it. However, just on a practical note, because suicide is illegal, the people left behind won`t get life insurance payouts if the person who committed suicide took out their policy in the last couple years (I guess it depends on the ins. co.)so they at least gotta wait long enuf for their families to be able to collect!! Personally, I think Futurama has it right -- just give us free will and let us suffer/enjoy the consequences! Make it easy and cheap - $.25 hahaha

I don`t know what potassium chloride does...
Why not OD on heroin or something if you`re on the way out anyway? A painless death is a start, but one could do better and have an ecstatic one!

euthanasia ftw.

if your terminally ill, i dont see the problem with ending your life. its the ultimate act of love you can show to someone in my eyes. save them from suffering for nothing and all that. if there was a chance you would recover, then thats a different matter. and thats the reason its illegal, cuz there would be no way of regulating it, and unfortunately some doctors would go bumping off anyone and everyone to save on expensive drugs, treatments and to basically free up beds. a sad world we live in where a hospital bed is worth more than a life.

I can`t believe that christians would allow people to suffer unbearably just because allowing people to die doesn`t fit in with christianity. More proof that christians are evil

Potassium injected into the veins can be very painful indeed. It would be kinder to use i.v. barbiturates.

I have to do a research paper for my English class in college. It has to be on a controversial issue and I chose "the right to die." This movie is perfect in helping me write it. *movie goes to favorites*

its from the same year as the suicide booth too

"You are now dead. Thank you for using Stop`n`Drop, America`s favorite suicide booth since 2008"
-from the first episode of futurama

coincidence?
yes. but its still pretty funny

He invented this quite a few years ago, but it`s the woman with the facial tumor who was denied the right to die who prompted him to finish the design and put it into production.

And pyrochem, he came up with this before he was part of the government, *I think*. I`m not sure, and don`t feel like looking that up, but I`m fairly positive that`s what happened.

The problem with legalized suicide is that mentally ill people could try to kill themselves, and nobody would be able to prevent them.

I do find it stupid how people aren`t allowed to end their own life. Surely it should be their own decision, not anyone else`s.
And that woman with the face tumor was cool, looked kinda alien-ish.

So if an armed criminal stuck a needle in you and forced you to press a button it`s alright because they didn`t actually press the button lol >.<

why did he choose a bright kawasaki green for it? I mean, thats kind of a bright happy color for something that kills you.

Anyway anybody who is suffering so much they want to take thier own life, and theres no cure they should have the right too.
