I know that China hosting the Olympics is controversial, but it IS about peace and coming together... This is going to be a common report with its journey around the world sadly. :(

^ China and Tibet have always been on shakey terms, and China decided to do some crap with its military. Now the Tibetans are majorly PO`d and want to protest China hosting the olympics.

Political dissent? Nationalism? The last time we had an Olympics this good was when roman gladiators murdered each other with pikes to win the gold medal.

alright, while i agree with the fact that the Chinese have committed some serious human rights violations against the Tibetan people and have suppressed their religion and culture, you have to take into consideration all the benefits that the Chinese have brought to Tibet. The GDP is thirty times larger than in 1950(before the Chinese took over), the workers of Tibet have the second highest wages in China, Tibet now has 22,500 km of highways as opposed to none in 1950, Infant mortality has decreased from 43% to .663%, the life expectancy has risen from 35 year to 65 years, there are now 25 scientific research institutions as opposed to none in 1950, etc.
It is for these reasons that i do not support full independence, however i do support more autonomy and civil rights in Tibet, and this is exactly what the Dalai Lama is calling for, more autonomy and civil rights, not complete independence.

Doesn`t matter if the protesters don`t succeed in causing a boycott, most countries will be out of there in a few days anyway after all the athletes end up getting sick from the pollution and smog. The IOC was retarded to give the games to a communist country anyway. Why don`t we just have 2016 in Tehran, Iran if we want to give sh*tty countries the olympics.

    China sucks.

Well, it got a point of view on the news, and got that news onto iab, so, if even one person actually is interested enough to do some research, to not look stupid, its all good, btw, if you have no idea what you are talking about, and you don`t care about what happens "on the other side of the world" maybe its best not to show your ignorance.

The other part of the problem is that Tibetan monks don`t "work" in that they don`t go and do a day job. They mostly count on handouts for food clothing etc. Naturally in a socialist rule that doesn`t go down too well.

"Paying back China"? What are you retarded? Are you even aware that China holds most of the USA`s national debt? How the hell can we stick it to China if China holds the US by the balls financially?
    Oh and another thing,
The US used to be the top in manufacturing until the companies outsourced most of its labor overseas. NOW China is the foremost in manufacturing and we buy all our friggin products from them. So now, we get to buy their products at whatever tariff rates they see fit to place. China is making money hand over fist and at the expense of most of the countries INCLUDING the US.

Perhaps you are right in that sense. However a lot of people in Tibet look up to the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader and he is recognised as a leader around the world. I agree with him, dialogue is the key.

okay free Tibet but don`t be hard on China. A very tiny amount of people control what happens in China, thus it would be completely immoral to impose Economic sanctions or any sort of attack on innocent Chinese people. The Olympics should go ahead in China for sure - it means a lot to many Chinese people.

I`ve never liked what China did to Tibet, there was no reason to take them by force and suppress the religion. I`m shocked how this is the 2nd communist country to be awarded the olympics. These games promote freedom and love for all, the things that communists (and Nazi Germany in 1936) were very much against. Free Tibet!

I have a couple of things to say on this.

    1) I guess the flame has to go every previous Olympic site on its way to Beijing, otherwise I cant see it going through London. But London is hosting the 2012 games, which haven`t happened yet.

    2) Looks like that Olympic committee has to team up and save the flame. They`d be so screwed if it went out, however I suspect that the runner is just for show and they have a backup flame nearby.

    3) Screw Tibet, its not a country, its just a part of china. Leave the conquerors alone. Its not like you had relatives who were killed there.

    4) Why do people care about Tibet? Thats ancient history. I could start complaining about many other lands that were annexed.

    Okay...

For the people who don`t know what the Tibet thing is about... Tibet had a very, very unique, spiritual culture back in the day, and then they were annexed by Red China. In 1959, the American CIA supplied information and supported politically a Tibetan uprising, which led to almost a million people unaccounted for, and 1.25 million Tibetan men dead... out of the 3, 4, 5 million people that accounted for the whole population. Since then, there`s been DOZENS, maybe HUNDREDS, of incidences where supporters of Tibet have been killed by torture, sent out of country to work as labor in China, or simply killed by the Chinese for shouting slogans in the streets.

Media is suppressed and censored in Tibet.. no reporters are allowed in or out, and being caught filming a riot or protest in Tibet will have you easily shot by the Chinese.

To add to it all, the culture of Tibet has been completely smothered by the millions of chinese immigrants.

That the IOC gave the games to China is a tacit acceptance of their human rights record.

The truth is that China has the games because they are an emerging superpower, nothing more, human rights be damned.

I used to believe the Olympics represented an ideal. No longer.
