It just changed the proportion of the different overtones.

"Jazzeh, you registered on the 6th ffs. You weren`t even here for the original."

Just because Jazzeh just registered doesn`t mean they weren`t here for the original. I came to this site loooong before I registered and started leaving comments.

I didn`t hear it rise -that- much. And by the end of the video when I reset it, it reset the tone back to low again, didn`t make it go higher.

Oh yeah... repost! Just for continutity`s sake.

Thanks zenfascist, I hadn`t heard of a Shepard Scale either (and I`m a musician as well--amateur, but still), but, after you named it, I looked it up, too:

Very cool! :-)

Heh, papasmurf you are full of it. It has nothing to do with overtones as such. I`m a musician, and this is the first time i heard of the shepard scale (had to just research it to figure it out) and I`m very impressed.

isn`t this the third time it`s been posted? the first was a simple audio file, the second was a video like this one, except it showed a video fast forwarding through a guy playing a crescendo on piano and a ball bouncing on stairs. just repost the original, it was much more simple that time.

If you listen to the first couple notes then fast forward to the last couple, the last ones sound lower. :-P

(This isd as best as I can explain this:)

It`s just played at 3? octaves, and the entire video plays one octave, so the first time you hear the lowest octave, the second the middle octave (so it sounds higher) and the third time the highest octave, and so forth.

I suck at explaining things...

simple the "creeping thing" actually just makes an arch, but the sounds alternate so each step in the ladder is a high note and a lower note so you dont notice it actually arches. at the end it is at the same spot it was at the beginning.

Jazzeh, you registered on the 6th ffs. You weren`t even here for the original.

One person saying repost is all it takes, posting the original post is acceptable, but dammit we don`t need 6 people to confirm it`s a repost so cramp it.

People who have a perfect ear for music won`t be able to hear the `rising.` Pretty nifty actually.

i play music, so naturally i understand why this effect works. So for me, and musicians alike, this is nothing impressive at all. Watching people get astonished over it though, thats nice =)

This is nothing but the exact same sound byte played over and over, no gimmicks. what your hearing are the overtones and your ear will naturally follow the progression of the pitches. The first time you play it, you can hear the really high pitches, and even if you play it 10 times, you can still hear the really low pitches. Our ear automatically focuses on the pitches rising, only because thats what the clip is telling us is going to happen
