The problem at Napster with Metallica was that songs from an unreleased album leaked out onto it, which is why they sued...
Everyone makes a huge deal out of this...It`s not like you don`t get your music for free now, or anything. >.>
Seriously, if any other type of industry started giving away free stuff, you`d all be right on it.
Hypocrisy is human nature. Stop flipping out.

i`m sure they`re going to find some way of profiting from it. Metallica doesn`t make music, they make money.

Haha the point is not that they`re giving away music for free (which actually is a good idea because, due to piracy, they make the bulk of their money at concerts, which people will now go to now that they know their new music.) That point is that Lars Ulrich is the guy who pretty much single-handedly took down Napster and led like a 5 year raid against p2p.

Am I the only one who got why the post was good? Lol

I wish bands would just get off their corporate asses and release their music for free and accept donations like every other developer on the internet.

Baalthazaq, it says that in the VERY FIRST SENTENCE of the article: Radiohead & Nine Inch Nails recently gave away albums for free online. I mean...come on, man.

If Musicians can`t get paid for thieir music, it becomes a hobby, not a business, and in five or ten years, every record is going to sound like it was made by somebody`s uncle in their spare time... Oh wait, does it sound like that now?

Who said they`re giving them away free? Theyn likely just mean selling online.

"To hell with the record industry, they can`t accept they`ve been obsoleted. They could at least offer a fair alternative."
^^^
You`re completely right about that dog. The more popular bands dont even need record labels anymore thanks to the internet. Fans will still go to the bands website, and the band themselves can distribute their music via the internet instead of CD.

These musicians dont make their money from music anyway. They make it from the concerts and the 20 dollar t-shirts and crap.

While you`re all on this "Yay to free music" there are bands that can`t survive following the Radiohead model. Bands especially being the ones starting out or unestablished.

Please support the artists you enjoy.. even if it means ones signed by labels. Music will suffer if this isn`t happening.

At first I thought that said "Metallica to do Radiohead", as in cover Radiohead. Bricks of disgust were very nearly shat.

Although they did this awesome thing, I still hate Metallica. Instrumentals are great, but the vocals murder it. And they sued Cannibal Corpse.

YOUREWINNER, I`m still reading that awesome article you linked us too. It`s just awesome. I love it. The guy who wrote it is very intelligent, honest, and introspective. I like it. I had to `favorite` it! Thanks for sharing it! It is pretty long, but a good read! Very worth it!

It`s good to see mainstream artists finally beginning to imbrace the idea of free music!

Here`s a good article some guy wrote about music piracy, he makes many good points and is a very long read, but very persuading.

It`s AWESOME to see all these bands move in the RIGHT direction. To hell with the record industry, they can`t accept they`ve been obsoleted. They could at least offer a fair alternative.
