Toshiba"s prototype robot, ApriPoco, controls home electronics. It learns from users and then can act on their command.

I can see a lot of problems with the speech recognition: "Turn of the lamp"
"Cut the power supply?"
"Lamp!"
"Blender?"

Of course, since it`s Japan, it either has to be unbelieva-drating-bly adorable or a woman.

Why can`t it just be a box that learns your voice commands and perhaps has a Hal-voice? They`re wasting money and time on poo like moving and robotic-animations for no reason

And Slate, should it be an April fools joke, it isn`t much of one... That technology is very conceivable. A robot that will do all your housework while you`re at work called Apripoco would be a prank/joke. Not something that is not so unachievable.

MadP, that`s not even close to A.I....

Cool idea but could use some work. For example, it says it can be used to change your channels but from the way it`s programmed switching to channels with 2 digits might get complicated. There is no signal for 50 or 15 or whatever, you press 5-0 on your remote then binary signals are flashed via infrared to your TVs IR receiver which says "Ok a 5 and a 0, 50."

Also the robot thing is cute, however, Americans aren`t really into the same goofy things Japanese people are into. So a simple microphone + the hardware in a nice square box would do the trick nicely...

And of course, ENGLISH.

Omo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.

i am skeptical of everything i see on the internet on april 1st, but with that said - i want one! it`s like most things made by apple: its all around pretty worthless, and probably quite expensive, but you would just look so darn cool with one.

Reading post after post on thread after thread, it becomes clear that some of you are obsessed with April Fool`s Day. Not everything posted today is going to be a joke. The guy had sex with a picnic table and a sea turtle can turn your tv on and off. Deal with it.

I`m thinking its fake. I mean it almost has April in its name. April fools.

I hope it isn`t April Fools.

Funny to think how fast our technology is evolving, I`ve only just figured out how to turn on the TV.

Groogle - you wouldn`t negotiate with it, you would just tell it what to do.
And you dislike the product because of its manufacturer? That`s pretty low, isn`t it? Wait...this is the internet, what am I thinking?

Mirnakesh - I assume you`d just have to say "Change to channel no x" or if you like are always on a channel, set it to default or remember its name. Either way.

And these things can`t take over the world. Silly peoples.

Although, you have to admit, these are less annoying than the paper clip on ms word, right?

The little by little learning would cause me to smash the stupid thing about the fourth time it asks what I`m doing. Also it takes a fracton of a second to press a button on the remote to change the TV vs however long it would take to say "change tv to channel # whatever". Finally everything that needs a remote, comes with one "free".

So adorable, I so want one, will love it and pet it and forget about it, cause I am guessing, having it asking you about every time you use a remote could get a lil tired. But damn it, I still want one.

I dono...Looks like you have to get right up in its face to command it..which...requires moving and therefore a remote seems more useful. Am i wrong?

I found three mistakes.

1) Wires on something that is suposed to act as a remote control.
2) I dont want to negotiate with my remote.
3) Toshiba.

Also, when I read butler I was thinking Asimov meets Mr. Belvedere...this is less functional but much cuter.

Cool, cant wait till its released with the speech recognition inside of it instead of on a laptop.

Voice Command FTW!
