It"s going to be so cool when this this technology goes mainstream.

"I doubt it. Source? I`d like to be proven wrong because it would be... awesome, basically"

i think the movie is pretty much a source for this in itself, if you do a little logical thinking.
They have the idea, and they know how they want it.
they just don`t know of any way to make it small enough, and they don`t have the materials that is needed to make it work. It would need production in nano scale (wich is still being figured out), and a material that allows an easy change in the magnetic structure, so it kan bind itself to any other of the same material at any point around a spherical construction. A change in magnetfield can also give a change in colour (corect magnetic field can bend light so only certain colour specters reflect.)
So they know how to do it, just not HOW.

hehe :-)

Oh...I thought they had done it already- that`s what I got from the title. cool, but the video was boring

The idea is alot more impressive than the current experimentation.

Didn`t anyone else read the title of this and think "Oh poo, the robot revolution is coming"?

"and they allready know how to make these shapeshifters, and how to make it work... They just don`t have the materials, or the production methods that is needed to do it... so maybe we will see the prouction of these in 50 or so years.. who knows?"

"From the title I thought of Michael Crichton`s Prey."
Was the first thing that came to mind here.

Again, awesome. Now this is technology to look forward to.

This may sound wierd but that presenter had a sexy voice.

This is realy cool.

I can realy see this as the way to go to get to nano-robots. if they manage to make these shapeshifters, they are just a step away from nano-robots.

and they allready know how to make these shapeshifters, and how to make it work... They just don`t have the materials, or the production methods that is needed to do it... so maybe we will see the prouction of these in 50 or so years.. who knows?

"Awesome, they should make clothes out of that, all you do is walk up to your wall and it morphs onto you."

Do you realize what new kinds of pornography would come out of that?

Terminator 2 is one of the best movies ever. This, however, reminded me of Terminator 3.

Sweet!
So now when the robots take over the world they can shape shift into daily house-hold items so we`ll never see it coming!

I want one anyways, though.

All I can think about while watching this video is what Dawkins said.

"Science is interesting and if you don`t agree you can f u(k off."

this could possibly be the first great invention of the 21st century. reminds me of the bad guy from terminator 2.

saw the thing with the cars and thought nano-machines.
saw what they really have now, and know its not going to happen in this life time.

we have a proof of concept, doesn`t mean practical implementation is even possible...

I live less than a half hour away from Carnegie Mellon. Isn`t it great? Lol.

Cool stuff, though. From the title I thought of Michael Crichton`s Prey.

I`m starting to get creeped out. I`ve also seen some videos about making a functioning model of the human brain. Imagine machines smart(er?) then humans, microscopic, and shapeshifting.

doesnt this idea of 3d modeling go against swarm robotics? or at least the current conception of it? I watched an interesting mini documentary on it the other day and nothing this complex was presented.

That would be so cool if they ever managed to get the computer modelled ones in the beginning to actually work.

And heh, that was terrible, LoofahBoy. But I can`t stop laughing either.

fodarexiii, you`re an idiot, that wasn`t real, only the magnet and the static robot were real. I`m a former video game engineer, so in you case don`t talk about stuff you don`t know much about.

Raberboom: That was real... it`s not a real car. They hope a REAL car, not a toy car.

LoofahBoy; that was terrible, but it made me smile. :-D

I wish robots were advanced enough for people to have them in their homes. That would be so awesome.

yeahh, that tech has a long way to go, seeing as the stuff they showed in the begin with the car isnt real cause they said "Reaserchers HOPE to build one that can shapeshift into a car or a person"

Loofah, that was terrible. Shame on you and all of us who are proud of you.

Pretty sweet vid, lots of potential behind that if it ever works out. Imagine the miles of spaghetti-wires you`d save by having solid models replace computer screens, with the same versatility. Whoa...

/Begin/ Really mean Joke.

So, first you could transform the bots into a hooker-bot for a good time, then have it transform into a washing machine to clean the sheets. Hell, it could do both simultaneously! It could screw you and do your laundry at the same time! Ya know, like a normal woman, but better. }-)

/End/ Really mean Joke. >:D
