I have a 91 GT and a 2007 GT and I can say mustangs have terrible handling. The guy should have had more control than that though. If this was a straight track the car would have won easily. Horses can run at a top speed of 45-50mph

210 horses? Beaten by one horse? Suckage.

BTW people that`s on DVD not TopGear. Jeremy Clarkson: The good bad and the ugly. The general point of it is that Americans can`t make cars as well as Europeans, which, other than the Corvette C6 and the Ford GT, on which the only American bits are the engine and the badge, is just true. Oh, and a Lotus can cope with Jezza`s driving SO much better than that tin can.

shagthefag, speed is achieved by power and traction. Decent power spinning the wheels mixed with good traction to put that power on the road = lots of speed.

Handling is how fast and well a car tackles corners. Something a Mustang cannot do.

But if it makes you Americans feel better, he drives a Roush Mustang later in the DVD and loves it.

    Clarkson sucks at life?

He is a bad driver and he knows little about the working of cars - something he has admitted...

    but sucking at life??

Hes a very famous and well loved TV presenter and has been for many years... Sure he has extreme views but your comment was a tad harsh?

Maybe its because you think he is dissing Americans like yourself? Hes not! Hes just saying you don`t know how to make cars that turn.

I want to be a Top Gear presenter!

    Shortone0726 - don`t judge a book by its cover!

He is so funny and a near god over here. He doesn`t just slate US cars - he used to own a Ford GT - the Top Gear team test 100`s of cars each year and slate UK, Australian, French, German, Indian and Japanese cars. They also praise cars from the same places. They showed the strength of a Toyota Hilux - completly trashed it - it still worked. Drove one across the artic, even drove one over the English Channel. Are begging Honda to bring over a car for the US market to Europe and trying to get Cadillac to build their concept luxury car for the world to use.

most of you are full of bullpoo. this asshat dosent know dick about cars or he would know that the car he is driving is a v6 automatic and not a 300 horse gt. most of you across the pond think you are hot poo with your drating bmws and mercedes when in reality you are just a cold turd. i have not seen one import car in the late sixties that stock for stock could run with an american muscle car,it was that way then and its that way now. and yes we do make some cars that not only go well in a straight line but also do pretty well in the corners. hey at least our cars dont require you to rev them to 8000 rpm to get any power out of them. and to this tool on the video that says americans arent going any faster that they were in the western days ive got two words and one number for him, ZR1!!

lol I`m American and I can personally say that a Ford "Cumstain" is f`n crap. But, hey, that`s just my opinion. FACT: Did you know that it was originally marketed toward women? And I like how you see them wrecked in movies all the time, `cause they`re so cheap and easy to come by. I like the newer Cadillacs myself, oh, and Panoz. But I`m mostly an import fan, Europe and Japan.
I`ll probably get a lot of backtalk for my comment, but oh well. Once again, it`s just MY opinion.

Mustangs(the car) ARE fast. Handling Doesnt matter in the US. Why? We have straight roads. We built them FROM where u want to go...TO where you want to be. they dont go all crazy, lol. the most curves you`ll probably encounter is maybe on a mountain road or a freeway onramp.

^^Agreed with Stentorian. Just because the newer models are sucktastic doesn`t mean the older versions were garbage.

Actually, if taken out on a curvy road, with a standard transmission (like a real sports car should have) and with a decent driver, the horse wouldn`t even have a chance.

The `07 version is a big sedan engine dropped into a fancy-looking body.

JC was exaggerating to make a point. It`s part of what he does to entertain people. He probably could have won the race, despite the car being crap, but the hyperbole of the situation appealed to him. He can drive well - e.g. check his lap times on the 24 hour race he was driving in, when he wasn`t messing about.

His criticisms are valid, though. The USA is replete with ridiculously heavy cars that handle like a constipated cow. It`s a reflection of driving conditions (longer journeys, so usually very soft suspension, wider roads, fewer bends or corners), culture (e.g. USA racing tradition is a quarter mile straight run rather than the complex tracks of UK, Europe, Japan, etc), cheap fuel and more call for low-end torque (so big, low-revving engines with the resulting poor fuel economy but long working life fitted the market).

Horses for courses, really. USA companies selling in the USA build mainly for what will sell well in the USA market.

silverado06 - did you intend to portray yourself as a stupid nationalist hypocrite? If so, then well done, you succeeded.

There aren`t any engines that it`s necessary to rev to 8000rpm to get any power out of them and there are very few engines for road cars that are meant to be revved that high at all. Maybe the rotary engine used in precisely one range of cars (Maxda RX).

Stock for stock, all manner of cars outside the USA could run with a USA muscle car and it would be a joke if you took the muscle car on a track with them.

So you`re just plain wrong except for the dragster comment. That`s mostly a USA thing and few cars from outside the USA are made to compete at the top end of dragster racing. You might find it entertaining to look for the two Fifth Gear videos on Red Victor One, a modified mediocre family car from the early 1970s that`s now a top-end road-legal dragster. On standard road-legal tires and using standard petrol, it`ll do the quarter-mile in [email protected]

Also, if the horse is going to run at full speed, why aren`t you flooring the Mustang during the straight parts? I mean, damn, that`s like saying a Pinto is faster than a Ferrari just because you don`t make the Ferrari go any faster than 35 MPH.

I guess its the muscle car enthusiast`s turn to say his 2 cents about this. I agree, the latest V6 mustangs are garbage, they have a rather heavier body than the older models and a big engine to weigh it down even more even my near stock `03 V6 mustang can kill one in a race. However, I do feel that Jeremy didn`t really drive that mustang well enough against that horse. It should have done good enough to at least beat the horse by a hair even with the lacking suspension that it has. It`s all part of the Brits bashing on American cars for entertainment.

Another thing I want to point out is that mustangs and other early muscle cars were targeted for the middle class Americans and the baby boomers who cant afford faster/luxurious/ect kinds of vehicles. what it lacks in luxury makes up in HP and barely enough suspension to plant it to the ground (fun to watch the wheels peel and smoke). If you want the car to perform better in turns, thats why there`s after market parts for suspensions and virtually any other kind of work you could do to the car but that all depends how much your wallet can dish out. Also, Idk about others but who wouldn`t enjoy working and tuning up your car to make it go faster and better than to just buy one thats already fast?

lastly this one goes out to Mr Mikeado, sorry to burst your lil bubble about Americans not making cars as well as Europeans but I`m sure if you research a bit on the Saleen S7, you`ll see a car that`s cheaper than most exotics and high-end performance cars, performs better than those mentioned vehicles, and it was designed and built here in the good ol` USA (so cal to be exact). It`s not that we can`t make cars as good as you all do over there, it`s the issue of who would be able to buy such expensive cars. I`m not really trying to start any issues or anything, but I am defending one of my favorite cars.

Atlacatl: The race was rigged. JC is a master of hyperbole, none of which he really means. This is a man who called for a *minimum* speed limit, enforced by shooting drivers who went slower, a ban on cars with less than 150BHP on major roads, etc. So he chose a mustang because a mustang is a horse - a joke inside a joke - and raced to lose against a horse to deride the awful handling in an exaggerated way to amuse people. It`s his job.

However, the criticism is valid - the car handles dreadfully badly because it`s simply wrong in every way concerning handling. Later in the DVD, he drives a couple of modified/rebuilt ones, both also American, and is hugely enthusiastic about the Roush version because it`s properly powerful and it handles very well. He doesn`t deride American cars just because they`re American. He also derides British cars, French cars...any cars that are poor in some way, especially poor handling and/or lack of passion.

He also made the same point you made about the mustang and aftermarket parts:

"The whole point of the mustang is that the base car was only ever a platform. You bought it and then you made it better, faster, louder, more exciting."

If you think old Ford Mustangs are better, you`re clearly have a death wish. Old Ford Mustangs have a forward-flying modular gas tank that becomes during a fiery incendiary bomb when the car is struck from behind. If you want to end up a pile of smoking flesh, get an old Ford Mustang. If you insist on having an American muscle car, go with Dodge or Chevy. Not the Dodge SRT4 though. The Dodge SRT4 is based on the Neon chassis, which has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, safety ratings among all car chassis`s.

American cars are basically big moving metallic coffins.

Oh, did you know Ford Mustangs use an obsolete suspension system design that`s been abandoned other car manufacturers? It`s a design dating back to horse-drawn wagons, and no longer used in other car designs...oh, I already said that.

    Ford FTL!

Oh, and many of them are made in Mexico where manufacturing standards are extremely low due to cheap and poorly trained labor.

Ah, here it is. The segment afterwards, where JC is talking about modified mustangs. All American, so people who have been talking about him bashing American cars just for being American can see how wrong they are. He also enthuses about a mustang that does handle very badly and has dreadful brakes - because it has passion. He`s talking about American cars using words like "brilliant" and "fantastic". He has a way with words..."It`s 35% stiffer and if I`m honest, so am I. This is fantastic."

Roush Mustang racing against a BMW M3 would be interesting. It`s that good. It`s also wonderfully ostentatious, which I like.

Oh wow, check out the Roush mustang accelerating at 3:08. That`s music. V8 growl and supercharger wail - beautiful. Like a bear and a cat singing harmony.

This proves that a horse has more traction than a car... the Mustang is a muscle car, it wont provide you with the best traction or acceleration rather top speed.

Bah, cut off. It`s the noise where USA muscle cars excel. There`s nothing like a big grunty V8 for engine music. Hmm, no, that`s not true. The Veyron`s W16 is the dog`s danglies. Listen to ignition at 1:59 into this clip. I played that repeatedly - it`s the sound of human ingenuity.

    1. If the course didn`t already exist, they created it to make the horse win, for entertainment value.
    2. They`re performing a handling test on an American muscle car, seems unfair really, since American muscle cars are designed to drive fast in a straight line, but this is entertainment.
    3. Sure Jeremy might not be the world`s greatest driver, but it is really difficult to drive a fast, unstable car through a small track. You can`t just gun it, otherwise you`d end up in the dirt in of the turns. The horse is going to do what it takes to stay on its feet during a turn, and Jeremy was doing the same for the car.

This is entertainment. Why people decide to come here and say "American/European cars are better because " is confusing really. They`re all designed by different companies for different customers and different environments.

shepherd; generalizations like that just make you look ignorant. Not all Americans are the gun-toting, war-supporting jack-offs that you`re trying to make us out to be.

And to everyone that got offended over what some guy on a television show had to say about a crappy car, get over it. Were you part of the design team or construction? Doubt it, so don`t get your panties in a twist, he`s insulting the car, not you. Besides, we should all know by now that American-made cars are rated for poo. They don`t run as well, and they break more often.

Me? I`m a Toyota girl, and I love Top Gear.

You`ve got to put the car in context, most parts of America (I imagine) have straight roads, so it’s not that important to build a car that goes round corners all that well. You’ve got to look at the market it’s pitched against – Yes a European car would go round the bends quicker – but that’s cause they’re designed with that in mind – in a straight line the Mustang is a good muscle car for little money. I drove one while on holiday in Vegas and I thought it was pretty cool. It’s not as quick as a 911, but that’s not what it’s all about. Besides, the video was just for a bit of fun, don’t take it too seriously!

I know that, I left the message really to see if people read this far. being a pastor I hate generalizations. sorry if I offended.

Clarkson, although a bit of a bigot, is funny and a healthy voice in a condemnatory world.

angilion, yea ive seen how he later drives the modern modified mustangs (roush and shelby gt) but in my opinion, those cars look nice but still because of the newer cars putting on so many lbs, they cant compare to something like this

    modified new edge cobra

want a mustang that turns on a dime?

    fox box mustang

im getting a foxbody mustang soon too.

ttsec, all cars are moving coffins if you pick at the details good enough. But to each their own.

with the size of the track already small and located in bfe, the outcome was already known. The mustang v6(should have tried a v8)is an average car for an average price used for average driving. It`s not a high performance vehicle.

silverado 06 (page 2) you know jack-shhite about cars. Nissan have been making a car for years that trounces most American cornerphobes: GT-R. Shove that up your McStraw and swallow it.

Also, only tossers in England drive Mercs, BMWs and Audis, which, FYI, are all German, and feel smug about it. American cars are for cruising and straight line drags and you know it. That`s why they suck ass at corners, unlike our cars which, now that Rover are gone, are all sports cars, seeing as Vauxhall is now part of GM and Jaguar are owned by goodness knows who. So take your motoring ignorance somewhere a million miles from here and watch mor TG or something to educate yourself. Now.

Actually as I`m stressed from school and some of these comments are pissing me off, I`m gonna go ahead and point out that most of you need to learn a lot more about cars before commenting on drivers and defending the lowly mustang which clearly understeers like a pig and is just a cheaply made marketing ploy using `60s nostalgia to appeal to Americans. Watch a decent car show like TopGear and form a decent opinion before saying stupid things.
