I like it.

It moves pretty quickly, actually. And it reminds me of the hunters from half-life 2 episode 2.

Walks too slowly and is way to loud to be really effective. Great balance.

A step in the right direction. More like a tiny "I-hope-no-one-is-looking" shuffle.

That is really creepy, but it`s cool all the same. It looks like too people facing each other walking, though, bent over to carry the stuff.

I`d run away if I saw that thing coming at me.

aftershock: The caps lock button... It`s a nice thing... See, you can switch between upper and lower case just by simply clicking it! ;)

TAKES TOO MUCH EFFORT.

Japan - Creating robots to be maids and run other similar tasks.

America - Creating robots to simply kick ass. Well done, Boston Dynamics.

make it run silent instead of sounding like a giant horsefly from hell and it would make a great asset to military and exploration and maybe even search and rescue.

Just need some sound proofing on the engine so you cant hear it coming from a mile away.

That`s pretty cool. I like how it jumped over the yellow bordered rectangle at the end. It sounds a bit too much like a running mini-bike to me, though. Would not want to use that at night.

God, I would go crazy if I saw one of those things running at me in the wild.

This is actually pretty old. I watched this a couple years back. I think it`s pretty cool, and I don`t know about anyone else but combined with how it walks, it`s bullet resistant body, and the sound it makes? If i were on the other side I think I`d crap my pants.

Thats got nothing to do with the robot `dog`

why dont they call it a mule?

I thought it would be easy to knock over and bog down, but that thing is pretty darn resilient. Just seeing it get kicked and recover that fast was amazing.

Yeah, they really have to work on making it silent if they want to use it in battle.
Personally, I say give it robot-eyes and send it out on search-and-rescue missions. (Hey, it can already climb over rubble?)

Change its name to "Big fly the annoying buzzing military robot"
0
Reply
Male 9,306
Now that is some really impressive robotics! Only main thing I`d say is the noise would probably be a deterring factor, but then they may fix that later in it`s production.

Loved how it slipped and slid on the ice, that was funny!

Please, I beg you!! Kill it while we can!
It freaked me out, seems an alien. That kind of monster that is alwas chasing you. You can run, run, run, the thing is always there, slow, but it doesn`t sleep, it doesn`t have a soul. It will get you when you sleep.

- "bzzzzzz"
- Oh god! It is here! Shoot it! - *blam blam*
- "bzuuuuiiuiuzzz" "bzzzzz"
- Why it doesn`t die? WHY?

Male 986
i think it looked like a big fly..... and why was the that buzzing sound, its not very useful for military stuff, in war you have to be subtle...

it also looked like an alien, especially when it slipped on ice at about the half of the video.

My mother`s the CFO of Boston Dynamics, the company that makes Big Dog, and I worked there doing computer support for them a few summers ago. To answer a few questions, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) provides funding for the robot and does so in stages, making the company meet new demands for the project each time they renew funding. DARPA`s conception of what the robot should be and do has changed over the course of Big Dog`s development. It was originally (and is still) meant to haul soldiers` gear to places - like, say, caves and mountains in Afghanistan - where it was impossible to get conventional vehicles. The military has had to rely more than it would have liked on animals like mules to transport soldiers` gear in Afghanistan and, as we all know, animals can get sick or injured, need food and water, be uncooperative, etc. So Big Dog is (at least for now) not intended to carry people or to be a combat robot (picture mounted guns), just carry gear.

ALIKABUL: THX MAN! IT`S MUCH EASIER TO WRITE NOW! DIDN`T KNOW ABOUT CAPS LOCK!

hehe...

anyways, i felt kinda sorry for the thing when the dude kicked it, and when they sent it out on the ice...

The ice thing kinda reminded me of bambi, and i always cry when i think of bambi *sniff sniff*

heheheee

Hmm, reminds me of the Hunters from Half Life 2: Episode 2. It`s ironic that it`s name incorporates the word Dog, since Dog is also a character from HL2.

Seen it in a documentary. Why? Coz I`m smart! (Plus I had a very long Sunday afternoon combined with Sky HD)

Not a very subtle noise it makes, mind, and it would scare the life out of you if you actually saw it in the woods, perhaps at night, especially if you hadn`t seen it b4.

it`s kinda creepy but cool

they should get rid of that buzzing though or else enemies will hear it long before they see it.

if this is what we can see commercially, just imagine what they have hidden behind the doors of places like Area 51...
That`s an amazing robot if it was dressed like a dog I`d believe it - so lifelike! But `TheGigglebun` is right - technology IS scary. The fact that this is a `military robot` just goes to show that the uses of this type of technology will sometime be used in wars and to police us - a robot will have no hesitation in killing or hurting us!

ANYWAY I MUCH PREFER THOSE EXOSKELETONS AND POWERBOOTS.

IF THAT DOG WAS A BIT LESS LOUD... HELL I`D RIDE IT INTO BATTLE!
CRY HAVOC! AND LET SLIP LOOSE THE DOGS OF WAR!!!

OH FRICK YEAH! I think that thing would be able to carry a person weighing less than 300 pounds. Maybe 250. If that`s the case, then I want a robot pony! It moves so fluidly! I think I also found the source of the chupucabra! All this time it was a military machine. Seriously, though if it gets loose in the night, people will freak out. :-D
