Fox News is the most worthless piece of poo news station ever. Video games are NOT TO BLAME. Bullies, name callings and racism are the prime factor here. I only went into about 1 minute of that Fox News video and stopped it so I could type this post, and ALREADY, I can guarantee you it is absolutely retarded.

I`d rather eat my own poo, than spend an hour watching Fox News.

Jack Thompson + Fox News = EPIC FAIL
How does one even gain the title of "Campus Shooting Expert"? You go to college for that, or you just give yourself that title? Fox News FTL.

ah,okay,np Charizzo, just am bit touchy on that one as everyone and their idiot brother seems to want to use stuff like this to bash on the goth and metal community these days,in germany anyways, can get really annoying, especially if you´ve worked in a job with guns or carry one for defense or are a sport shooter(all 3 apply to me) and are a goth(or anything that wears black) they jump up and down all over you

I went to this school about 2 years ago and still have many friends that go there and a stepfather that works there.

We all, or at least the ones of us that aren`t complete idiots, are saddened by such happenings (and any deaths, not just American ones)... but to see the pictures and realize that I used to walk on those sidewalks and through those buildings every day; it hits so much closer to home.

Anybody that attempts to use events such as these for ammunition in their own personal crusades so soon after the tragedy is nothing more than a hate mongering fool. If you can`t keep your mouth shut and give the families and friends time to accept the tragedy before spouting off your babble, then you have no right to speak at all.

So many people`s lives changed for the worse yesterday, just like that, at the whim of some nutjob. Today some people in Illinois are without a friend, son, daughter, brother, or sister that they had just yesterday morning. I don`t bother looking for "reason" or "sense" in stuff like this, you know there isn`t any.

Still, I can`t help but wish that suicides where you take a bunch of innocent people with you weren`t becoming so trendy.

That shooter is a bastrd and whatever he`s been given in hell, its far too easy on him.

When I think of this incident, I think of my lecture hall; it`s a room that can hold 300 students. I imagine the professor just teaching his lesson, and someone dressed in all black comes bursting in the room shooting at everyone. It`s terrifying to face reality.

penguinfogel: "and a note to our european friends, as I observed when I was in England shootings happen all over the world regardless of wether or not guns are banned..."

Oh please. Shootings do happen, but not FOUR TIMES A WEEK as they seem to occur in your precious country. School shootings in Europe are extremely rare and tend to happen only once or twice a year in the WHOLE CONTINENT. And several victims are rare. However I do not think American gun policy is entirely to blame, it`s also the generally trigger-happy mentality that counts.

@ WNLD:

You might be right. I´m in college right now, and we are like 700 people in my class... There is a girl which I have noticed that is always alone and has no friends. I tried to talk to her once, but je was just... weird. She didn´t say much, and was pretty strange. The shooter of Virginia was also like that... And now I ask you: how the heck do you want us to help people who don´t accept it?ß

PandaLoMein: "A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic." I used that quote two years ago in my English class, but I don`t think anyone understood it. It still holds true today, which is the real tragedy. This is the message I was trying to convey, but I completely forgot about the quote.

Standards: No apology needed, we were just stating our conflicting opinions.

People, get used to this. I want to say that we are all responsible for these incidents. Even though they might have been joking, the couple of people toward the beginning of the comments who said this guy was missing hugs were probably the most insightful commenters. This is everyone`s problem.

I was a bit surprised to find myself feeling anger at the dude who was being interviewed. His attitude was detached in a way that isn`t like shock/trauma. How could anyone attending a large university in these times be completely unaware of a huge amount of suppressed unhappiness and violent urges on campus? It`s not possible. Most of us are guilty of looking down on others and avoiding those who are already too alienated.

Of course civilian and military terror are related. All violence comes from the same place: outside of love and belonging.

Thank you for tolerating my rant. I saw this on the news on the way to work this morning and I`m still processing strong feelings it caused.

The most recent update says that there are 7 people dead, including the shooter. And there are 16 others injured. A few of them that have been confirmed when they died:
* Daniel Parmenter, age 20, last of Westchester, Ill.
* Catalina Garcia, age 20, last of Cicero, Ill.
* Ryanne Mace, age 19, last of Carpentersville, Ill.
* Julianna Gehant (pronounced Ghee-hant), age 32, last of Mendota, Ill.
* Gayle Dubowski, age 20, last of Carol Stream, Ill.
NIU officials have confirmed that the gunman has been identified as Steven Kazmierczak, age 27, of Champaign. He is a co-author of the academic paper referenced in the Tribune article, "Self-Injury In Correctional Settings: "Pathology" of Prisons or of Prisoners?". Kazmierczak was a graduate student at the School of Social Work, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who had received the NIU Dean`s Award in 2006

this isn`t like it but something happened at our school a little while ago that just was so sad and shocking..

one of the kids was so stressed out by school and home life, he was driving himself to do something nasty..

his family were constantly bickering about who got him and pupils at our school were always taking the mick out of him..

he was a nice kid...kept himself to himself, sat at the middle-back..

he had brung a 10" knife in his bag and was waiting for someone to annoy him..

one kid decided to go up to him and call him "a dirty paki"..that is when he pulled the knife out..he was in my lesson, so i saw it all.

the kid just freaked out started shouting "there is no way out! there is no other way!"..

he pulled out this big knife and cut the bullys throat, killing him..he then turnt the blade on himself..

everybody in our school thought it was all thier fault, but i have realized in time, we just need to treat each other with respect... R.I

Why don`t these losers just kill themselves and leave everyone else out of it. They want to be remembered for something? The event itself is tragic of course, but what is almost as tragic is that now, every news program across the country is going to broadcast this guy`s name and picture to the world, just like he wanted. If I had my way the media would be prohibited from broadcasting or publicizing the killer`s name in any way, shape, form, or fashion. I say remember the victims, not the scum.

Anyone attacking American gun policy please realize that if someone is willing to shoot 22 strangers, they will be more than willing to get a hold of a gun no matter what. You can outlaw guns, they will still get them. Its that simple.

There are so many variables in these situations. Police aren`t fast enough, but is allowing concealed carry on campuses the correct thing to do? America needs to start having a lot of open forums to try and resolve this issue. Because currently, this isn`t working.

I go to Penn State, University Park. A branch campus, PSU Harrisburg, recently had a student convicted because on his myspace he was threatening to make VA Tech look like child`s play on a PSU campus. This is everywhere and its a real problem.

Standards: When did I EVER, EVER, and again, EVER say that we should support the war on terror. I`m against war of any kind, let alone the war on terror. And the "Virginia Tech and a third" comment was to show you how many CIVILIAN lives are lost every day in Iraq. Apparently my point didn`t get through, because you`re still offended at any mention of one incident of 33 Americans killed, but if I said "the Iraqi civilians killed on February 13th, 2008," you wouldn`t care, would you? You have just furthered my point.

I got my facts from iraqbodycount.com Not all the deaths in the middle east are reported so 80000 is the low end of the spectrum. IBC counts "the violent civilian deaths that have resulted from the 2003 military intervention in Iraq. [...] includes deaths caused by US-led coalition forces and paramilitary or criminal attacks by others." Even with an unbelievably high margin of error of 25%, it`s still 33 people a day. It doesn`t matter what caused the deaths either. A "civilian attacking a university" and a suicide bomber attacking women and children in the streets aren`t different. They`re both humans taking human lives. It doesn`t matter who kills. Are you saying that the lives of six American students are more valuable than the lives of 33-45 Iraqi civilians? What`s the difference between a terrorist and a civilian anyway? At what point does a civilian stop being a civilian and becomes a terrorist? With the possession of a gun? A bomb? Or when the motives of kil

I graduated with a sociology degree. At that time, I heard a stupid academic joke, "Psychology majors can`t get along with themselves, Sociology majors can`t get along with anybody." I was just thinking about that when I was reading these posts and saw the news.

My major was all about trying to find the social causes of stuff like this, and it`s still a mystery. We obviously need to work as a society to figure these things out.

WHAT CAUSES SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN!? It`s all so senseless. Absolute terrible. My condolences to everyone involved. I can`t imagine what being involved in a tragedy like this is like.

As for Piroteknix, your thesis is that we should support the war on terror "but no one cares, or even SUPPORT the war on terror" yet why should we support something that has claimed lives? Also going along with Pikaro, there`s a major difference in those standpoints. If you want a comment space focusing on the middle east, post something about that. But for this, right now, it`s all about NIU.

Piroteknix: You obviously don`t understand the difference at all. The Middle Eastern conflict you compare to this is military action against terrorism, and many of those casualties you mention are also deaths caused by terrorism.

That`s VERY different from a civilian (not a terrorist) attacking a university.

There is a lot of death in the Middle East, but the premise behind it is completely different. Please get your facts straight before you make rude comments.

You`re all victims of the times. Six people dead in America is a huge deal while six civilians are killed in the middle east easy every day, not to mention the starving and destitute in Africa and underdeveloped countries and all around the world. The news coverage on school shootings ticks me off because everyone in America sheds a tear for five well-off American student dead (I guess I`m making the assumption that they`re not poor based on the fact that they were in college, and people who can afford college are at least above the poverty line, even with loans), but no one cares, or even SUPPORT the war on terror, which has already taken its toll of ~80,000 civilian lives. Since March 2003 (4 years, 11 months), that`s 16270 deaths a year, or ~45 deaths a day. We could have a Virginia Tech and a third happen every day and we still wouldn`t have that many deaths every day. Of course the way Iraqi civilians die are just as horrible, if not more, than school shootings.

I work in DeKalb where this happened. The is a sad moment for the town of course. It will be interesting to find out if the writing that was on the wall is linked to this. Hopefully the quick response of the medical people helped save some of the students. It took only about 2 mins. from the time of the shooting till the sirens of the ambulances could be heard according to what I have heard from people there.

I`ve lived in Montgomery County, Virginia for all of my life; so my condolences really go out to the entire community. This is really just awful... :-/

As a side note, Blackpuma, while you make snide remarks about one country, don`t forget that you are also representing your own with the same breath.

Well this is sad really...What is this world coming to? I bet Jack Thompson is going to find a way to use this info to try and stop GTA 4 from being released. My heart goes out to the family`s and friends.

And even if it were legal, Blackpuma, that doesn`t excuse what happened today. It doesn`t justify it, and it isn`t an open invitation for things like this to happen.

You know all those times people make fun of kids who have no lives, or are different?

Apathy and a sadist attitude are probably variables.

Blackpuma, in SOME states it is legal to carry weapons, but definitely not the type he was carrying. In Illinois it is not legal. This is a horrible tragedy and could have happened anywhere.

I was in the building next door leaving class when it happened. There was a student lying on the floor bleeding and a bunch of us crowded around applying first aid. This is the scariest thing I`ve ever seen. You see sad stories and like this all the time on the news, but to have it happening a few hundred feet from you scares you more than you can imagine.

Also, it`s been confirmed four are dead from the shooting, and the shooter was not a student.

This is absolutely terrifying. I graduated from this school a little over a year ago. I still have friends who go there and I know a lot of the professors. And there is no clear set motive that is known. However, last December graffiti was found in a bathroom stall in of the residence halls that spoke of this happening.

i don`t know, but it seems unlikely that a guy who is willing to do something as screwed up as that would have a girlfriend to morn over in the first place, probably wasnt very good with girls, but seeing that it was on valentines day, hes probably looking for recognition.....I blame rap music and 50 cent for wanting to call his album "the valentine`s day massacre" at first rather than just "the massacre" =)

Stuff like this just shouldn`t happen. I mean, sometimes, people just need to give each other a hug, and ask how it`s going...

BBC headline on the website: "5 dead in US College Shooting", then "gunman killed 4 people before turning gun on himself", then later "hospital reported no fatalities on their website". So did people die or what?

That would be my assumption, He was either "lonely" or got left by his girl, Or something like that, And decided it was the university`s fault.
