Dumba**, the reason people go shooting up their schools are because of the teachers. Why did he go shoot up the school years after he graduated? It was probably because he couldn`t get a job due to his teachers sucking so much or maybe a mistake they made somewhere. There should be more school shootings, the school system sucks.

Jack Thompson is like the ambulance chaser of the social activist world. He`s sniped for years on subjects he knows little about.

The only thing that is curious is that I still hear the name `Jack Thompson`.

Okay, the found out the guy didn`t really play video games all that much. He wasn`t taking his drugs to keep his brain in balance. They think he just snapped and went on a rampage.
Besides, it`s not video games provoking school shootings.. it`s the media. They give it so much attention.
Oh and by the way Thomspon. Cho DID NOT "Train" in CS. He didn`t play video games that much. His family swore to it. So kiss my dick Jacky boy.

You mean the world...You are isolating America by saying that America is the only country that plays video games.

The question is...Does a shooter game teach you how to load a gun, aim and fire?

Wow.. so I guess this guy seriously never really studied communications theory.

    Correlation is not causation...
In other words... "correlation studies provide that violent media such as TV/video games/music and antisocial behavior are linked in the real world, but do not show anything definitive about cause and effect."

It`s more likely that individuals with a predisposition to violence will gravitate to violent media rather than the media itself causing people to commit acts of violence. There are far too many other variables involved with the psychological process of committing an act of violence for specific causation to be placed on any form of media. This includes genetic and environmental predispositions.

This poo pisses me off more than the immense stigma surrounding the perception of violence being prevalent in those with mental illness. yet another piece of crap that the news media creates without worry of the repercussions to millions of people

It`s as simplistic to say that video games don`t influence violent behaviour as it is to say that they cause it.

Popular culture in film, television and new media is more violent than it ever was and I think that does lead to a normalisation of violence for some very damaged people.

Mind you, I`d take all the guns away, which in Fox News` eyes that makes me a dangerous lefty political antagonist.

Yes, people kill people - but the gun helps.

Yes, each one of them are all just imitating the same video game character by coincedence, and not each other. All these gunners are depressed lunatics that want to go out with a bang, and having no imagination of their own, they imitate what they`ve seen on the news.

I`d rather take guns away and say "sorry" for the loss of liberty than continue with guns and say "sorry" for these killings, which are happening all too often.

Because you cannot protect the freedom of everyone in society, you have to trade off the imfringement on the few for the liberty of the many.

So we say to the NRA, "we`re terribly sorry - and we do recognise this must be hard for you - but for the benefit of mankind, the guns must go. Why not play chess instead?"

it`s true that violence is desensitized in the u.s. we mock it, and make fun with it. but the idea that video games are, in and of themselves, causing violence is absurd. we have a problem, but it`s not electronics.

-Because you cannot protect the freedom of everyone in society, you have to trade off the imfringement on the few for the liberty of the many.-

There`s something morons like you just don`t understand. You can`t remove every gun from this planet, you may be able to make it illegal to purchase and carry one, but guess what? That only prevents the law abiding citizens from carrying a weapon. Do you think criminals really go through a week long waiting period for the guns they commit the jist of their crimes with?

Making guns illegal would crack down on the amount of bad guys out there with weapons, sure. But it also GUARANTEES that there will be a criminal with an illegal weapon for every family with none. How in god`s name is that a good idea?

While I certainly don`t think violent video games cause people to be violent, I do think there maybe some merit to the statement that games make already violent people more proficient at killing.
At the bare minimum they provide a medium in which it is okay to exercise the violent urge, which in some people could easily be translated into the real world.

I don`t think we should ban all violent video games, I think it is simply a case of a few sickos highlighting in the extreme what these games may induce in some people.

I played Half-Life, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Grand Theft Auto, and any violent game u can name, but I don`t go around shooting innocent people. WHY??? because the core problem with people who do go around shooting people lies somewhere else not video games... Stop trying to blame all these shoottings on video games!!! how about better gun control or better parenting JACKASS

B-Hazard: Owning a gun just means you`re more likely to shoot someone in it. Not an intruder.

28 times more likely that a gun you own (legally, law abidingly, etc) will be used in a suicide attempt, accidental shooting, kids playing with it, angry wife, stolen and used, etc, than it will protect you from something or someone with a gun.

Having a gun in your house makes your house more dangerous for you and your family, not safer. Would you really make the same arguments for any other kind of ordinance? Nukes perhaps? Everyone should have one, after all the only amendment you have for the use of guns is to protect yourselves from tyrannical governments, not each other. Grenades? Flame throwers? Surface to Air missiles? They`d certainly make a terrorist think twice about dropping a plane on your building, and you`d all be... safer right?

I was literally thinking not long after I posted the first time, what would happen as weapons get more advanced and people are carrying missiles for personal protection, lol.

On the first part you have a very valid point, but I`m sorry.
There`s no way you`re ever going to convince me it`s a good idea to let criminals be the only people with weapons.

Sure, law enforcement officials will have them for our safety. But the problem there is no matter HOW FAST a cop can make it to your house after a call, the guy with a gun in your face is always gonna be there first.

Owning a weapon is a major responsibility and I`ll entirely agree that it can lead to all sorts of bad situations, but there`s no way I`d ever consider giving up that right.

    Awwww this subject again...

You people are ridiculous, no offense, but it seems the majority are active secular humanists clearing the way for open mindedness yet you can`t seem to respect anyones views but your own. Personally I agree with him, and your the reason why, everyone is desperately trying to protect what pleasures them. We all know that stereotyping is wrong, however we know exactly where it comes from. Demographics, and we all know that the main target for games like call of duty and doom are snotty obscene punks obsessed with weaponry. I`m not saying everyone who plays a game is a psychotic killer but look at the media, and look at our culture, if you don`t see a mirror image then i don`t know what to tell you.

The reason I`m being so thoughtless, lacking tact in my response is because that how everyone else sounds. Stop protecting your pathetic idols and use your common sense.

By that logic, we are creating a horde of civilian murderers with the army. As soon as they become civilians again, we are all at risk to these killers who have *actually* been trained to kill in the real world. If video games are this much of a threat, imagine what basic training must do to a man. Oh wait, I forgot, Jack Thompson stands to benefit from the armed forces so he won`t slander them for money.

notice that the original question was "why did he go on a rampage" and the answer was that video games cause violence. this bigoted fu(k didn`t eve know anything about the shooter, even if he was a avid video game user, but still went on to preach his message.
this "war" is no longer about stopping violence in our schools. this is about who has control over the media.

I don`t know about you guys, but when I plan on shooting up a place I rehearse in simulators I call "video games"...

Just like the other day, I was rehearsing for my gig at Madison Square Garden, I was going to play Freebird and One, and when I got on stage, I had a real guitar, and realized I didn`t know f*ck all about how to actually play the guitar, and then I got stage fright. So much rehearsing only to realize all my video game training was futile.

Charizzo - "Way to point out Counter-Strike. I was waiting for some voice to yell "HEADSHOT" but it never happened. How the hell do people use video games as a training device. If so, then why doesn`t the military use it?"

Actually, the Marine Corps does (I can`t speak for the other branches). We call it ISMT - indoor simulated marksmanship training. But instead of a controll/mouse`n`keyboard we use ACTUAL weapons (albeit slightly modified) that must be reloaded, cause recoil, and can even simulate jamming that must be corrected. Think Nintendo Zapper on steroids.

ANCB - "By that logic, we are creating a horde of civilian murderers with the army. Oh, wait authorities blamed that one a a brain tumor. That was a popular rationalization back then . People have committed hoard acts throughout time that can not be pinpointed to one act or reason. Fact, one rational student or professor had a conceal and carry permit this could have ended differently.

Why blame it on cs all the time. If he wants a video game that is more life like blame it on the american`s army video game where they use that to simulate and train people in the army.

Also why is there even weapons to kill people blame it on the manufactors of weapons.

Videos games are barely the reason that people kill people.

also when there was no video games was there no killings before?

Do you think gta copy their game from video games or did they copy the idea from real life events.

The main source of problem is the blaming game. Just like hitler blames their problems on the jews. they wont admit to their own problems and always want to blame it on someone else.

later they might blame gas prices going up on video games such as sim city.

At the end he even says "We will see, we will see" refering to the idea if the videogames caused it or not. I`m sure he believes that video games didn`t have EVERYHTHING to do with it. He probably just believes that videogames ingited that shooting...They sure didn`t help to stop the shooting, you can`t deny that.

Ok first off, obesity is caused by spoons, let`s make spoons illegal...

I don`t think their "correlation" takes into account mass murderers (is that the proper term?) from *before* the creation of videogames, I`m betting that there`s an even stronger correlation between mass murder and crazy... crazy`s been around for a while, why is it no longer considered to play a part in this sort of thing?

And I don`t understand how someone with a fully functional brain could possibly think that making guns illegal could help things.. what are you going to say to the guy who`s mugging you? "Hey fella, you can`t have a gun, they`re illegal!" ugh...

"Hey man.. woah... hey!... Stop gunning down people, man! Hey, don`t you know you aren`t supposed to have a gun? You`re gonna get in sooo much trouble!"

"train" "rehearsed" "learned", those are not things that games can give you. TRUST ME! I play counter strike, Unreal tournament, and other first person shooters. I also shoot real guns. I can tell you that without going to the range to shoot, my skills did not improve from playing a video game. I also play army with a bunch of friends in the woods and I am not any more stealthy because I play a video game.

ok i could get into the psychology but plenty of people have, i could call him a douche, but still others have before me, what i haven`t heard is that games can`t actually train you

believe it or not a boomerrang shaped controller or a keyboard and a mouse can teach me to aim properly, they can`t teach me what to do if the gun jams, or remind that you have to rooster the gun, or teach you to count the shots cause in real life you don`t have an ammo meter, believe it or not they don`t even teach tatics that well, cause video games are scripted, real life isn`t, and i don`t know of a single game that teaches you to kill yourself after your big massacre

the sadder parts are is one he didn`t wait for a statement about the guy or what was going on with him previosly, nor did he even build to it, he didn`t try to gently persuade he just flat out went it`s video games and that my friends pisses me off

making guns illegal in the US is probably a bad idea.
but in the uk making guns legal would be a terrible idea.

criminals in the uk are the only ones with guns, true, but because of our gun laws there are far fewer criminals with guns, and the need for criminals to carry guns is reduced also

I posted something similar to this on the first NIU posting, but here`s my idea on how to stop these school shootings. It has nothing to do with gun control laws or school policy or anything like that. First, ask yourself why these guys do this. If they feel their lives are miserable, why not just kill themselves and get it over with? Why take out a bunch of innocents? Why go out like this? If you ask me, it`s all about the legacy. They feel like they don`t matter and that the world has stepped all over them. They want the world to know their name. They want to show the world what they are capable of. I think a law should be passed, whenever something like this happens, that prohibits all media outlets from publicizing or broadcasting the name or photo of the shooter. Not only out of respect for the dead, but so the killer does not get what he or she wanted. Think about it, if the world was never to know who they were, would these people be so inclined to do something like this?

    Mr. Thompson,

As far as I know you`re a lawyer, a spin doctor, by profession. What basis do you think you have to pass judgment on video games? If I ask, I could easily find ten professional rebuts to every one of your arguments. You should know that being a lawyer. Granted, the school shooting tragedies of the last decade and even further past are horrible but, they account for a very tiny fraction of all the violence in the U.S. and world wide that takes place every day. I believe you picked your battle because you only want limelight, your ten minutes of fame. You care little about the victims, it`s just a hot topic and you sir, are on the bandwagon.

How about the war in Iraq Mr. Bush lied to us about that has killed almost 4000 U.S. men and woman (not counting the unknown thousands of non-U.S. casualties)? There is, believe it or not, real life violence shown and heard on all forms of media every single day and night. Don`t you think that may have at least as much influence as

video games? You can sit on your high horse and blame video games while you condone the war in Iraq, but that only makes you a huge hypocrite. Even the simplest of minds can see right through your transparent showboating.

I`ve been involved in debates with self-proclaimed, ultra-right-wing-religious-do-gooders such as yourself before and they always ended up the same way. Sooner than later, you all go back under the rock you climbed out from under when the hot topic of the day changes.

Again, any real life violence is reprehensible no matter what sparks it, but your priorities, Mr. Thompson, are way off base.

    Sincerely,
    Toby Speeks

WOW...Video games UH. Wonder how Counter Strike played on the UNIVAC system of the 1966`s where Charles Whitman climed to the top of the tower at the University of Texas and took out 14 people. Wow I guess I didn`t know violent video games were around back then
