before i watched this i thought it was a vault of sperm and eggs. so if there was only one person left in the world and they could somehow swim to an artic island they could pour the seeds in their vagina and make babies. idk. lololol.
this is dumb who the drat is gonna want to eat corn and potatoes so bad that thell go to a remote island in the middle of the arctic ocean right after an apocalypse.

I don`t get it. 200 years from now, who`s going to remember that there are seeds in some remote facility? Imagine if we all got wiped out. Who`s going to know of that place and crack it open?
Imagine if they do find the place. How are they going to know wtf those seeds are.

Just wondering, if or when we ever need to use those seeds, how the hell would somone get them to where they could do some good?
I mean if the world`s crop supplies have colapsed, one of the the first things to go will be transportaion won`t it?

"Hate to break it to ya, but this planet is almost dead already. We wont last another 100hundred years our planet simply cant support it. You can say that we can use electricity nad such but that will only work if everyone starts NOW withing the next ten years. If we dont then we gather a percentage of people stick them on various shuttles and send them out to find a planet that we could live on."

Why do you think people are being (going to be) sent to Mars? The Earth has found ways to rebuilt itself, look at the asteroid that hit during prehistoric times.

oh man this place is just going to completely destry human race. even if there are a few survivors. wouldn`t you think they would want ALL the resources left in the planet. that place will be a warzone. I, as many others, only care about my survival, and we are the ones who are going to make it. so we`re going to be fighting for those seeds. unless, of course the asteroids hits that island or the US East Coast. lol

I have no reason to mustrust Norwegians. I was a huge A-Ha fan back in the day. I love the idea of Polar Bears as security. Well, if they are anything like Pullman`s bears near the other Svalbaard....they are unstoppable:)

ya i heard of this before... when the day comes that we are so drated that there is no way to get food because all the animals are dead and crops destroyed... how the hell are we gonna get to this place.. walk/swim? then how the hell do we get IN if its all locked up.. THEN we need to get te seeds to some place where they can actually be planted...
if it comes to the point where we really need these seeds to survive we wont be able to use them.. so ya they just wasted a ton of money and time

... Pollar bears won`t come and eat you for being around.

They`ll look you up and down say "yeah? So the fu¢k what?" and move along.

Unless you`re an ass and run up to them thinking "TEDDY!"

Keep your distance and so will they.

If we ever need to use this? How will we get to them? It`s super defended...HOW do we open it if we are going back to fighting each other with bow and arrows?

If our civilization ever comes to that point, somehow I don`t think some seeds will bring us out of the brink. You gotta consider the human element at that point. Anarchy tends to get in the way of things.

Yay! When USA and China destroys the world, a small European country saves it. But then USA will probably destroy it again.

Why not just stop living like swine?

Ok, if we had to use it, would there be any dictators left? We would be talking about mass extinction of most of life on earth. Like if a comet hit the earth..our way of existance would completly change. Humm do scientist know something we dont?

I have a hard time believing that any one dictator would take that vault for himself or herself.

First they`d probably have to go through Norway`s security. Then they`d have to take it up with the rest of the world. Everyone`s well-being is potentially in that vault, so everyone cares about what happens to it, and eveyrone will fight for it.

i`m gonna hop the conspiracy train with epoxysuit and egomie. this sounds like another science fiction plot like the National IDs or the microchips in people`s skin... scary stuff, man...

Male 33
epoxysuit, i thought the exact same thing. in a place guarded by subzero temperatures, permafrost, security cameras, steel doors....and polerbears...it kind of makes you wonder what theyve got in there besides seeds.

sad thing is that we are going to need this one day. The way the world feels about the US is scary. What is more scary is that we are not going anywhere like most people think. it is not the "fall" of the US. we would not let that happen. We would nuke and take everyone with us first. I hope something changes soon. Good job GW.. war for oil..selfish fool.

I read about this last month in Popular Science.(January 2008 issue) Its a good idea to put something like this into effect. Its a good safeguard in the case that the world might need it.

If a disaster actually happens, what are the legal terms regarding the use of the seeds? Which government owns them? I think that poor countries will be screwed, not being able to retrieve their seeds later.

It seemed like a really neat idea to me when I saw it.. it had an upbeat ring to it.. but then I thought wouldn`t it be horrible if we had to use it, and some dictator had taken control of it?? Yeah, sounds like a movie plot, but it`s not entirely farfetched having seen what we`ve seen throughout the centuries.. The idea of preserving species of plants so they don`t go extinct was the most appealing to me..

p.s .. Nice to see one of my links :)

Can we make sure to NOT give directions to this place to Hillary, Obama, and Canadians. We don`t need any of them preserving their seeds or eggs.

Interesting video, got some of my brain cells rubbing together, something that doesn`t happen here much at IAB.

(not knocking IAB, I love that it isn`t serious here)
