How Do You Wave Hello?

Submitted by: jessieplume 9 years ago in

A bunch of very strange ways to say hello in different countries. And can a Brit confirm how you wave hello in the UK?

They *might* have been trying to be funny. I`d like to think that was the reason for the strange cupping action for the UK. Yeah, the Queen does it, but thats probably so she doesn`t get Repetitive Strain Injury. Also, I love how this video just assumes that each country has one wave to say hello all it`s own. I think this person should either travel more - or just not make videos at all. ... I wonder if one day there will be a drug to cure boredom. (not vallum.)

Aww Gen Ex, I was kidding.

No one actually waves like the queen. Even the queen herself has given it up. It looks ridiculous.

Take a joke, man. :)

I don`t really wave unless the person I`m trying to get the attention of can`t hear me. E.g if I`m in a crowd and I`m trying to meet up with someone, I`ll wave to get their attention. In a normal siduation, I just stick with saying "hi"

Wow. I`m so proud to be Maltese right now. We get the coolest fake-wave I`ve ever seen :D

I`ve never waved like that before but I`m going to start it now, just so it`ll catch on and we really will be the most awesomest island in the world >.>

Actually, 30 years ago people would`ve took that as a very insulting gesture because it was used to invoke bad luck, like the evil eye. So maybe this guy means that all we maltese are secretly mean and malicious

Actually, this wave could be offencive and poo to the queen. Shes like one of the only peoples to wave like that here. And why are everyone else telling us how we wave?

Are you sure this is not "official" ways of waving, i`ve seen all sorts here!

beternal: Haha took me a while to realise what you were saying aha (I only got it when you said the "w" soundling lip action.

It`s either that or "to-...."

I think he just made up random sh*t and hoped that people would think the countries were so weird they would buy it. He should have left out Britain, though, to make it less obvious.

They didn`t do the wiggling fingers wave. As in, hold your hand still, palm out, and wiggle your fingers. I`m disappointed.

Male 2,159
The British way is: open palm facing the other person, making semi-circles lots of times. Or, to put it another way, a normal wave.

I wave my jumping up in the air, frantically shaking both my extended ares side to side. But only if I feel crazy. The only time I ever wave is if I see someone that I don`t really like and don`t want to talk to them.

At first I was really laughing at how much effort people around the world put into a hand gesture.

But apparently this guy`s a moron, so none of these can be considered real without someone from the area confirming it.

The first time he did Army it was the Boy Scout salute.

If you try doing the Boy Scout salute in basic you`re going to be cleaning the barracks with a toothbrush whilst the drill instructor rides on your back.

I live in the UK and i have never seen anybody apart from the queen wave like that. People here usually just wave by raising their arm

Female 579
LOL. I am not bloody posh: that wave`s the stereotypical Queen`s Wave. I don`t screw in a lightbulb every time I want to say hello. I usually just hold my forearm up and wave my hand side to side if the person is near, and I have my arm bent into a right angle (top part of arm shooting straight from my shoulder, forearm sticking up) and wave my forearm and hand side to side. ^_^

Female 1,412
I usually just stick up one finger though xD which is actually common for Britains haa.
0

LOL people always relate Brittain to the queen and London and poo. Which kinda sucks but its the best thing we have :P I just thought that everybody waved the same. Like a normal wave???

I don`t wave like any of them... I keep my hand where it is and close my hand one finger at a time starting with my pinky.

The "British" wave depicted here is really only used by members of the Royal family, but not even then as a "Hello" or "Goodbye." I think it`s meant simply as an acknowledgement of the crowd.

Most British people wave like the Canadians or the Yanks.

Like hell do we wave like that! The queen is the closest I`ve seen to waving like that... I normally just raise my hand, and if its someone special I`m saying goodbye to, and I`m not going to see them for a while they get whole hog massive arm waving!

na... the british wave hello by touching their thumb-tip to their index finger-tip with all their other fingers alongside their index finger... wiggling their wrist up and down :-)

it`s often accompanied with a quiet "w"-sounding lip action :-)

Ok, Brits...spill it! Is that gay ass hand wave the way you say "hello" (or as the video says...goodbye)? Probably not, but I`d believe it if it were from France! (Yes, yes... I know. What an ignorant jerk I am!)

Lol the UK wave is a stereotype born from the late (and could be current) Queen of england. She used to wave that way. Hence the "Oh hello! *Cupped hand wave*" gesture so mocked on television both British and otherwise.
Some of these are true as general or off-variant waves.. but a lot of them are just rubbish.
