From what I`ve seen of David Lynch this didn`t surprise me much.. I agree with him, but it didn`t surprise me. The line between advertising and entertainment has been blurred for a LOOONG time though - all the way back when The Flintstones did cigarette ads.. You know what I think is bullpoo? Untalented, overrated directors who throw a bunch of mismatched scenes together and claim that thier movie has some kind of hidden meaning and that people need to look for "clues" to decipher it.

But I do agree with him in this video.

David Lynch for the f*cking win.

Seriosuly, product placement is terrible. Even in the most serious movies that get the best ratings, there`s product placement. Look at Cast Away, FedEx, Wilson, and whatever else he unpacked.

The worse movie I have seen for this is Talladega Nights. I realize it was a commentary about how much Nascar whores themselves out, but if they didn`t whore themselves out for that joke, then nobody would have known the products they were trying to sell...Shake N` Bake...it works..Shake N` Bake...Ugh. I hate Talladega Nights. Shake N` Bake...

Um ok. so you`re making an independent film. you have a scene where someone is using a product, any sort of product... it doesn`t matter. you have a choice, you can hire a graphic designer to create something for you, cutting intensely into your budget, or you can use a name brand product and gain money for other uses and as such making your film better. which do you choose?

Name brand products are more believable, pure and simple. I`ve seen juno (although not an independent film but certainly one with a tight budget), and its reference to tic-tacs only made cera`s character more real to me.

As long as it doesn`t hurt the integrity of a film, it`s fine... and it`s even better if placement creates a more real, believable world.
I really can`t understand someone so outside this world that our everyday products seem rubbish being on film as... our everyday products.

How the hell could his possibly be considered funny? It`s sad that everyone is so satisfied with an old man who`s only agenda is to call everything bullpoo, which I would normally agree with. But I`m not satisfied with someone just saying "it`s bull-poo", I want them to put a reason behind it, like good comedians do. For example.

You would think that we in the US would be standing behind a retired general for President rather than a bunch of self per claimed overly experienced politicians?

product placement is bs. anyone who doesn`t know that is too materialistic. it doesn`t make the movie belivable, a good story line and decent actors do (and a decent actor is an artist, that makes a movie for its art not money) movies that glamorize posesions are the reason for so many fellows get stabbed for northface jackets. the reason why rich white folk are afraid of black people. people that like to see a mac in a movie cus "oh that`s the computer i use!" are brainwashed drones that spend 200 dollars on shoes on an 8 dollar an hour salary. and i don`t care how much cgi that converse add baught them i still know ITS JUST A MOVIE! anyways here`s a real shocker, that whole movie was worked around for that add! read the book. its all for money people, not for anything else but to line someone else`s pockets. get real, get a life if you think that`s real life you must spend alot of time looking at what other people waste their money on. now don`t you wish i just said "i

Talladega Nights is a great piece of satire that works on so many levels. If you don`t like it, you probably don`t like satire to begin with, or don`t understand it. This is why Will Farrell is great, not because he`s a great actor or whatever, but he`s damn good at satire... kind of like Jonathan Swift.

The only product placement in a movie that was decently done was the Cadillac in Minority Report.

For those who`s unpleased by the answer`s rude conciseness: people, he`s just a (censored) film director after all! Don`t you know how much self-esteem and confidence a regular director has?

Well, I don`t consider Lynch to be the best film maker of all times. And yeah, product placement doesn`t irritate me too much (it never takes place in elitist cinematography anyways), a movie`s stupidity in certain cases does.

Completely agree with Astrognaw. (Juno is an awesome movie btw :D)

If you can have a product in a film that goes with the story line, then I see no problem with having it in there. If there`s a scene at a party, why not have the extras drinking Bud Light?
Honestly, I never even noticed product placement in a movie until I took Media Studies. Maybe that`s just because I watch good movies where the director cleverly places it in.

Advertising and media go hand in hand. Why did Michelangelo paint the Sistene Chapel? Because he was PAID to do so, and was paid to depict biblical stories in an artistically beautiful way. He was paid to sell religion. Why would anyone pay for a bunch of idiots to piss around doing "Art" without a potential economic return? It`s work, and work has to be paid for. David Lynch can make films no one understands and get paid for it, but he`s one in a million. For us working artists, we welcome someone with deep pockets to let us explore our creativity.

So on that retarded note you sell-out; If you were to paint a painting of a beautiful landscape someone asked you to paint, but Nike came up to you and offered you money to add their logo onto your landscape, you would do it. And if, say, Nokia, Prudential, Ford, Marlboro, Microsoft, Century 21, Smith & Smith Attorneys at law, came to you, you would still do it becuase they "support you".

    The correct answer is NO.

You are an artist, you do not have the right to sell your artistic liberty for money. What you would be doing is allowing exploitation.

A good movie has no product placement. A bad movie needs product placement; such as Talladega Nights, I Robot, Transformers; otherwise, the director would not be making as much money as he could.

And WTF are you bringing Michelangelo into this for? He didn`t put product placement onto his paintings you dumb fu*k.

Product placement is exactly what David Lynch says it is. Anyone who fails to see this is a deluded retard who doesn`t know how to appreciate the finer things in life.
