Tihs quiz is really dumb, for one a gun should be much closer to the bottom. As the quiz stated there is no oxygen on the moon, a gun needs a spark, ie: combustion. Also, waht use is food on the moon, please correct me if I am wrong but the onbly way to eat or drink would be to take ones mask OFF, not a good idea. One last thing, I am not so sure about, I thought that it was not possible to see stars on the bright side of the moon, because of the intensity of the sun, but that could be something to do with the camera that takes the pictures that we see of the surface.

If matches are "Virtually worthless -- there`s no oxygen on the moon to sustain combustion", how are you going to use "2 45-caliber pistols, loaded" ?

I thought you needed oxygen to shoot a bullet....
(you know, explosive combustion and all).

Same goes for the signal flares....unless they have a oxygen compartment included to sustain the cumbustion

And how the hell are you going to treat an injury?, take of you suit and put a band aid on?

I agree - anything that requires removal of a space suit is stupid - therefore, although I got 14% (fail), the quiz itself is stupid, so I was bad at being stupid, so I`m good at being clever so there. Or something...

actually a gun can be used in space as it has its own supply of oxygen in the oxidiser. To read more go to:

I did and it said, "However, forward-thinking manufacturers have packed an oxidizer within the bullet casing. Whether that`s sufficient for an explosive launch is up for much debate."

So, I`m still not completely sure.

Well Lawviz you got a 94% because you where smart enough to not take the quiz at all.

The only way to truely score a 100% without cheating is to not take the quiz at all!

Bullets have a mechanism that doesn`t require oxygen...They have gasses and powder in them that makes them work in any environment. And signal flares create their own oxygen.

Gunpowder needs no oxygen to combust, nor do signal flares. They have the oxidizer in the mix already.

However, the idea of using 45 caliber pistols as "propulsion" is 100% retarded. Momentum is conserved, and pistol rounds are tiny compared to the mass of a person (and 50kg of water) - they would propel you backwards at a completely negligible speed. It`s the moon, not outer space.

I got a 24, which is quite unfair considering I got my top 5 answers correct, but the rest were a bit scattered.

Oh and guns as a means of propulsion:

I may have this wrong, I`m not really up on my gravity calcs, but I was under the impression that agun would be just as effective as a "means of propulsion" on the moon as on earth.

If the equation is based on weight: Both bullet and person should be lighter, therefore having the same effect.

I it is based on mass, there is no change. I guess there`s less of a compensatory force in gravity... but still...

Ignoring physics and practicality completely, firing off all bullets simultaneously in one large boom, I can`t see you propelling yourself more than... 20 feet?

I would have some faith in the .45s

As already mentioned, they will work on the moon, if they didn`t they wouldn`t work too great on earth either, cause it`s not like there is a whole lotta room in the barrel of a gun for oxygen anyway.

Also, momentum is MASS by velocity, therefore gravity is irrelevant, unlike when you`re talking about weight. Because it`s mass by velocity, the really really fast bullet has lots of momentum, think of how much force it would take to stop a bullet dead in it`s tracks.
Conservation of momentum then dictates that the impulse imparted onto the gun, and then onto the person, is just as high as the bullets momentum.

This and lets say a well timed jump could therefore get you over a crevasse or something fairly competently, I think.

Also they are .45s which is a fairly big bullet.

I got 2% o_O and my top 3 were all in the top 4 (and the top 2 were right)? the hell?

and yeah the guns need oxygen for combustion too but i was thinking there`s no f*cking life on mars you won`t need to shoot anything so i put them last.

yeah I dunno how I got 2% seeing as how I got at least a quarter of them in the right spot and some others close. maybe it glitched iono

Baalthazaq, I went and did the math a while back, and a 12-gauge buckshot shell has a payload weighing about one ounce, and launches it at roughly 450m/s, assuming no friction whatsoever it will still move an 80kg human back about .4mph. That`s one tenth of normal walking speed, assuming all pellets hit, all energy is transferred, and there is no friction at all. In other words, the pellets hit at maximum velocity from point blank range and drop straight down when they hit, and that will move you back 1/10 of walking speed. A .45 ACP pistol round is roughly even, so when fired in an opposite direction, it would not be an efficient means of transportation.

You use the guns to shoot the guy who made the quiz.

Radio is first of course geez... This moon base obviously has many of these `smaller spacecraft` to get you back. If you can just phone them they`ll be over in a matter of minutes. Its only 200 miles after all, what is that to a spaceship?

I`d be dead if I crashed on the moon. Of course I`m not going to be on the moon anyway so that was really stupid.

I couldn`t imagine needing anything that requires you to open your suit. That eliminates all of the food and water. You`d need the oxygen, the star chart, the rope, and the radio. MAYBE the gun but I don`t know how far you`d be propelled. If I had room to carry them I`d take them, otherwise screw that. The rest is useless.
