I`m from norway... and we do have plenty other problems, but maybe not as sincere... as a people i think we are fairly narrow minded, and rude.. maybe even arrogant :O... and our school system is the worst in the western world i can think of!! (i`ve been to an international school in asia)... i also wish the prison sentences were much stricter to minimize crime, im actually surprised its so little! But i guess we focus on rehabilitation instead of "lockup-in-a-cell-for-along-time"...

Just something for all the people who are like "I want to move to NorwaY!!1!!1!1" and people who don`t like Moore`s movies. Probably no one will read this, but whatever:

I think that the point of Moore`s movies isn`t to present perfect facts, but rather to present ideas and ideals to members of the population who would not otherwise think much about world politics (the uneducated, the young, the people who just ignore such things). I don`t think he`s really trying to teach us, he`s just getting thinking so that we`ll seek more accurate info ourselves. And now look, people online are comparing and contrasting different countries and types of governments in a not all together immature way.

Who knows? I could be wrong. At least it`s a possitive take on things, right?

The reasion that Norway is like it is, is because Norway stands behind the opinion that the one that need`s helping, must get help. that`s what it`s build on, and oil money ofc.

but we also have other priorities, we want good health instead of a large army..

and usa will never become like us, not because the population difrence, but simly because the avrange amarican is to selfish and greedy.

I did notice that in the countries that Michael Moore keeps showing as wonderful, they are not being inundated with poor, uneducated people from their neighboring country. The countries who control their immigration have higher standards of living for their people - period.

"How do you tell a communist? Well, it`s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It`s someone who understands Marx and Lenin."

-Ronald Reagan

Just thought I would piss someone off with a Reagan quote.

The US does not have to become socialists to fix things like health care. Let doctors be doctors by limiting legal liability for any normal procedures that natural have a form of risk to them lowering insurance liability and stop trying to force them into HMO`s.

Roomv - OK, so you don`t like Michael Moore. However, does that stop him being right?

Yes, he makes aggressive film-making, and yes, his documentaries are one-sided, but then again, so is everything in the media nowadays. - While you go on about how he makes things so `black & white`, take a look at aspects of the Bush administration`s global policy.

What Michael Moore is doing is pulling off the same propaganda tricks that you see on TV every day, but he`s telling the other side of the story.

And, quite frankly, good luck to him if he`s making millions! That`s the American way, right? Tell you what, let`s also berate Noam Chomsky for making money by writing those evil books, and give George Bush jr. a prize for his continuing nurturing of big businesses, liberating oil fields, ensuring that all those good US soldier boys have something to do in their spare time, and allowing all those nice people the chance to earn loads of money from your illnesses. What a guy!

6: You say "My research points to oil revenue actually making up over 60% of the necessary revenue to keep these programs rolling." In 2007 Norway used NOK 71 billion of a National budget of NOK 689 billion. That is 10,3%!

7: You say we have a 48% repat offense rate. Actually it`s 47,2%. But that`s If you include all the traffic-offences (like speeding or DUI). Look closer at the numbers, you will find that 13,9% repeats violent crimes, 6,7% in sexual crimes, and so on.

So the next time you try to find our flaws, do your homework better!

1: What has Norway to do with Japan?!

2: The muslims: No, No, and No!

3: And why do you think the target is the US? Maybe because of your wars and your military presence in the middle east?

4: Norway was built up before the oil...

5: What happens when the oil runs out: We still have the money! Ever heard about The Government Pension Fund - Global? It`s the largest pension fund in europe, and second largest in the world, around the same size as the California public-employees fund. By the end of 2009 it will reach NOK 3.044 trillion or US$563.7 billion. That`s as if every Norwegian had us$119,936 in their bank-account. We also have other businesses, you know!

obhwfgirl: More people = more tax revenue = more money to pay for the bigger administration.

So your arguments are a bit flawed.

Also, what personal choices do the norwegians have to sacrifice in order to live like this? That argument makes no sence, the people elect the government, so the people decide in the end.

Before people get too bent out of shape about taxes, the upper-class pays about 35% income tax. I, personally, don`t believe in the lifestyle provided by Norway because, from what I`ve read and heard, this lifestyle comes sacrificing personal choice and the government deciding what is best for the people....

But that`s beside the point. My point is that Norway has a much, MUCH smaller population and it isn`t just about tax revenue. The more people you have, the more government it takes to run the country -- so the real problem is the size of the American buracracy. Such a large government is not viable for the US right now because the system is so inefficient. Americans already complain that our education, military, law enforcement (etc.) systems are underfunded and inefficient. If we could ever have a system like this, our government needs to modernize (e.g. most of Europe is using fibre optics and the US is not).

the U.S. will never become a paradise for ordinary law-abiding citizens because the Corporate War Republicans believe that the War on Terror trumps everything, including the Constitution, Liberty, and Freedom. They want Corporations to control everything and "evil government" that by definition is supposed to be "Of the people, By the people, and For the people" should be abolished and thus everything will be for the corporations.

Norway is a wonderful paradise, I do disagree with their prison system; giving a chainsaw murderer a job with chainsaws just doesn`t make sense to me. Where are their armed guards? Where is the appearance of a prison? Such a system couldn`t be run on the mainland <sarc> hmm I wonder why </sarc>

Wow, you folks will believe anything that`s put in front of you, won`t you? As if such an issue could ever be SO black and white, as Mr. Moore depicts. Sure US health care has severe issues, but this film makes the situation look completely binary and that`s just sad. Now I can see how every tyrant and oppressive goverment that has ever existed got it`s power. Here you have a clearly arrogant and greedy filnmaker who is very well known for his aggresive yet undeniably one-sided use of propaganda, and when this man dangles images of a seemingly completely utopian society in front of you in an unabashed attempt to make everyone go "Oooh wow look at that!! He is obviously so right about everything!!", you just fall for it and buy into the idea that he is some kind of God-sent revolutionary and personal saviour from "Evil America" without even thinking for a second about whether you are actually being manipulated by this man just so he can use you to rake in millions o

Snalin,
Tell me something about your murderers. Have any one of them relapsed into their old methods? In the states you can do the same thing, go to your parole hearings and prove to doctors and regents that you are ready to re-enter society as a functioning member. We just choose not to surround our criminals in luxury. Problem is here a person can fake thier way through parole and go right back to killing, robbing, or whatever it was they did to begin with. Im sure you answer will be "of course not when we heal our criminals they stay healed". But my research says otherwise. According to my research it says that your countries, crime rate has a 48% repeat offense rate. That means nearly half of your inmates will repeat their offenses once released. How is this true rehabilitation? I will give you that the US has a higher repeatability rate, but the point im making is that your criminal system is far from perfect.

Snalin cont.,

Golden age, built up on tax revenue on oil. So what happens when the oil runs out? Then what? No tax revenue = no money to sustain programs for people. Eventually your dark ages will come. Perhaps sooner than you think. Have you checked the latest statistics for oil reserves world wide. The earth is running out of oil and Norway is high on the list of depleted reserves. Dont worry you time is comming, and it wont be long.

As for all the benefits for high taxes. I refer back to my above statements. Income and sales taxes dont make up the whole pie for revenues for programs and benefits. My research points to oil revenue actually making up over 60% of the necessary revenue to keep these programs rolling. So what happens when you lose that 60%? Programs start going away or other taxes start going up. What do you think the masses will do then? Fewer and fewer benefits (or lack of quality of those programs) will result in unhappy citizens that will demand change.

Snalin,
Only muslims you say? Tell me are they demanding that you hand over your hard earned money to them for nothing? Or how about demanding you change your language to support them completely? Are they buying every single company in your country and then closing it down and moving it to another country? You see in the states we have these problems with our "immigrants". They come to our country and because of the way our political system works they can make these demands and the system feels obligated to fullfill them.
No terrorist attacks because the terrorists have a much larger target, the US. If we werent here who do you think would be next and then after them and so on. Eventually the terrorist would get down to Norway, simply because they have no one else to terrorize and Norway doesnt follow their doctrine. Thats how terrorists work. You dont agree with them, they blow you up. It wouldnt matter if you didnt impinge on them they will impinge on you sooner or l

Ok i have read alot of these and now feel i must interject. Iroj.
Been to Japan for a while, and i can say first hand why they have little crime (i say little because its still there just not as noticable)One is everyone born there and raised Japanese, is raised under a different philosophy than most raised here in the states. Its a case of enivironment dictating the actions of the one. Second is the penalty for breaking laws there is severe. In the states you get put in jail for misdemeanors and then fined and released until their hearing. In Japan, there is no police cruelty clauses. They will beat the living hell out of you if you dont follow thier explicit instructions and ignorance of the language is no excuse either. Then once you are in jail they do not have to feed or water you. That burden is placed on your friends and family. Then there is no speedy trial or bail. Ooooooh free health care. Yet people constantly come to the US for major surgery (And no I`m not full of it, I know several people in the healthcare field). While social medicine may make everyone`s wallets happy, you trade this luxury for state funded doctors and long triage lines. Whereas in the US, you have to pay for your care (which is usually covered by insurance for people who actually have a job) but you tend to receive more prompt care because of a competitive capitalist system.

And this is all considering that it`s against the law not to accept a patient for emergency care who cannot pay, so the myth about someone being denied at the ER entrance because they don`t have a check book is complete BS.

I`ve been to countries with social health care. Now why it might seem nice. Some of the best doctors are in private practice. If you walk into a hospital most of the doctors will be pretty young. The reason, they are waiting to save enough money to get into a PRIVATE PRACTICE. Now, I also agree with the population thing. Most states are bigger than some countries that have social health care. Your health care should be based on your ability to pay. Like taxes. Just giving it away, doesn`t help anybody. Well, it helps the patient... but it doesn`t help the government. And in the end the government just giving away money, make an unstable economy.

There are of course downsides, amongst others that politicians have gone on an upgrade-spree through the school, thereby giving Norwegian pupils some of the lowest grades ever. We have low degrees of racism, the small nazi organisations that try to mess up everything is just that, small, and we are staying out of the EU (wohoo!). Of course, much of our riches comes from the fat loads of oil we have, and that they are owned by the state (lucky us). But we got the welfare before that. The (then) left-wing party winning all the elections for 40 years, the Norwegian variant of labour gave us the best welfare system in the world.

To the Americans out there, pull yourselves together, tear down your society and rebuild it to something other than the “celebrate the ones that make it, crush the rest to the ground”-principle that you are so proud of building your nation around.

As far as I have noticed, in the US you can have two full-time jobs and still be poor. Here, with two full time jobs, even at a fast food store, you’d be filthy rich. And we only work 8 hours a day, though there’s discussion about if we should lower that to 7 or 6.

“Norway rewards killers by sending them to some spa?”
Norway uses therapy to make killers understand that what they do is wrong. And the spa is only for the ones that have been declared mentally stable and willing to change by shrinks. It works. It heals them. It gives them back a worthy life and allows them to contribute to the community, instead of being parasites in prison. Everybody wins. I cannot remember any stories about anyone getting out after 21 years and then kill someone again.

"where in Norway are the Black Folks? The Mexicans? The Asians? “
The capital, Oslo, has about 40% foreigners, most Muslim. You fail.

“but look how vulnerable they are to terrorists”
No terrorist attacks against Norway. Ever. Some delegates were attacked in Iraq, but that’s it.

“Anyone here tell me what follows golden ages?”
Our golden age has lasted from the sixties, from before we had the oil. We build up a socialistic welfare-nation. And it worked. Tada!

“Sure-great health care system-paid for by the almost 50% tax rate! So, give us half your money every payday, and we`ll "give" you free health care.”
And free school, pensions, a good piece of money to physicaly challenged people, protection of Norwegian farmers, and a hell of a lot of stuff to make you happy.

You see, there’s no f*cking chance that you would find someone with a full-time job here that’s poor, unless that person has some

Thats such crap. What about countries like Japan where there are hundreds of millions of people crammed together very tightly and yet the crime rate and standard of living are better than the `almighty` US?

Like I said, I lived in Denmark and when I had to move back to the US I was just...so upset. I hated it, and having lived somewhere else in the world that actually cares about their citizens made me realize just how much Americans are willingly ass-raped (without lube) on a daily basis.

I want to move back, but its almost impossible for me because some many are moving over to Scandinavia and abusing the welfare system (as someone else mentioned); they see its basically a utopia and move their lazy asses over there and drat up the process for people who want to go over there, work, pay taxes and actually CONTRIBUTE to society.

There. End rant.

Speaking as a Norwegian...

please remember that you are seeing a Michael Moore propaganda movie here. For one thing, Bastøy is a MINIMUM-security prison, reserved only for a select few who has shown good behaviour during most of their stay in normal prisons. We also DO have the opportunity to lock people up for life, although it is then not referred to as "prison", but as "protective care" (for the public, that is).

In addition, lots of what Moore said was technically true, but he did not mention the downside of living here, such as overcrowded retirement homes, public buildings (schools, town halls etc) practically falling down from disrepair, all the bureaucracy to get said benefits, etc.

Yes, life here is pretty good, but there are problems here, as in every country. Moore just chooses to gloss them over to present his own agenda.

Yeah, so they get free health care, free college, a year maternity leave, paid tropical vacations, <40 hour work weeks, mandatory vacation time, and renewable energy. But we get tanks and guns and big ol` warships. Tell me truly, which benefits the average citizen more: utopian-like labor, health, and education laws, or the ability to blow crap up? I rest my case.

Michael Moore is pathetic. I can`t argue against this video, but I would be willing to bet a large sum of money that if I took the time to research (which I won`t) the country would be no where near the utopia he makes it out to be.

Half of this is based on the fact that I know the U.S. is no where near the hell he, and asses like him, make it out to be.

"Cultural Melting Pot". That defines the United States. Where in Norway are the Black Folks? The Mexicans? The Asians? Norway is now where the U.S. Was in the fifties, with a Predominantly White Population. Norwegians draw their roots from the Same Cultural heritage. Similar Customs, Ethics, and Physical Characteristics. *IF* that were the case in the United States, I am sure we`d be living in a halcyon wonderland too. I didn`t see the Racist Gangs in the Norwegian Prisons because there apparently is no reason for them to be racist.

Sure, it looks good on a Video, but I don`t see Michael Moore moving there for some reason. Norway is now where the U.S. Was in the fifties, with a Predominantly White Population. By the time you twenty somethings watching this video are getting ready to retire your country *WILL BE* facing the exact same bull poo we are because in the Fifties, the rest of the world was reading the same bullpoo propaganda about how great the U.S. was.

I don`t know how it is in norway, but here in Sweden you`re allowed to say "drat you" and other curse words to the police without being arrested/getting into trouble for it XD

yeah but that would never work in any country with a higher population than Norway. Norway has a pretty low population and it`s very expensive

More is very one sided in all of his movies, even a blind man could see that, but aside from that, he presents facts that pretty much anyone could find on the internet in about fifteen minutes, given you know how to use goggle effectively.

Nice vid... Made me feel good about being a norwegian viking. We also have the biggest annual LAN-party in the world and some of the worlds best gamers.(a little sidenote for all you geeks.)

With a very small and completely homogeneous population it`s not surprising the Norwegians can make socialism work.

Try it on a larger scale (i.e. the US) and a similar program would be doomed to failure.

Well, I tried to look up problems in Norway such as Drug trafficking, politics or economy. None of that came up, however, the only problem noted was a rather high rate of suicides among gay and lesbians.

^^ Look at the united states and it`s suicide levels? The #1 reason teen boys kill themselfs is because they`re gay and people won`t accept them. 1/3 of all gay and lesbians in collage attempt suicide. And there`s probably plenty more scary statistics.

It`s not the case of how much you`re spending, it`s the matter of *where* you`re spending it.

Norway evidently spends the money on welfare, and luxury, while I`m guessing US spends a lot more on military than norway, so probably that`s why even though US may produce more money, but is not living the same standards.

Besides, if 2 countries produce the same amount of money, and one country has less population, obviously there`d be more money to spend for the people there, no?

^^Well no. Michael Moore is a pathetic liar. Most of his movies are ridiculously elaborated and stretch the truth. I`m sure he`s not lying about Norway. But notice he didn`t put it in his movie. Because THEN, he would be telling the truth, and that`s just not what he is known for.

@ vintagepizza: Just an additional fact to the UNs list: All 2004-05-06, Norway was first. The reason for the fall is not due to poorer lifequality in Norway, merely a boost of lifequality on Iceland :)

In response to Tymberwulf: The figure I heard was that if the USA halved the amount of money it spends on military, EVERY child in the WORLD could have a proper education. So I don`t think America is low on money or anything.

As much as I like America, the education system and health system are no where near as good as they should be.

Thought this might be relevant to the video. This is the United Nations ranking of countries based on quality of life (list from 2007).

I`m norwegian and that prison on the end of the clip is for the very last part of the inmates sentences. They only get to that prison after careful examination and it`s only a small percentage of inmates that get to go there anyways. Oh, and in Norway we have prisons to stop people from doing more crime, make them better kinda, not to keep them away from the public like in most of the US.

@Tymberwulf:

What does the number of citizens have to do with the quality of their government? If at all, I would expect that a system working for more people could be more efficient.

The "who will protect you in case of an invasion" argument is also turning in recent years. Who says it won`t be the US that`s going to invade again? ;)

I`m Norwegian myself (although currently living in Denmark) and I can be the first to add something negative to my country (other than the penis shape). As jkahoon was talking about, Norway has a extremely high suicide rate, not only amongst homosexuals. We also have a large amount of drugs and drug-abuse, not alcoholism as was suggested earlier. Everything you see in the film is true, and it could last for another hour in the same track. Norways biggest problems is inflation (due to too much money) and the russians (as with everybody else). It was also mentioned that everything is really expencive, but looking at the income of the average norwegian, we have som of the cheapest (i.e.) groceries, gas, cars, real-estate in Europe, maybe the western world. Taxes are maxed at 41% and includes everything but free dental-care. We are not part of the European Union, which keeps imigration to a minimum and based on needs rater than goodwill. Feel free to comment.

i don`t thinks so. Companies are making a huge amount of profit with the private health care. Over here in U.K, the medicine prescribed is alot more controlled. E.G so many of my class mates whilst i use to study in america were on adderall or the other drug to be able to study better and for exams. You can`t even dream of getting a drug like that here because of the health risks. Anti depressants are prescribed so easily there compared to how hard it is here. I feel like i can say this cause i`ve seen for myself. The country can afford if everybody payed their taxes and a percentage went to the nationalized health care.

I was going to say something insightful but I think Tymberwulf covered most of it.

I went to Norway for 2 days to visit a couple of friends, and they were living the life of luxury. And I couldn`t find any technically poor people anywhere (maybe I wasn`t looking hard enough).

Stuff is relatively expensive though...

The NHS is so bad, they give patients vouchers so they can get free treatment in the private sector!

Anyway, Norway looks amazing, but they have less than a tenth the population of Britain.

They also only have 4.6 million people to take care of, or in terms most Americans can relate to, 22 states have more people in them than the entire country of Norway.

Imagine an entire national government spending it`s efforts (and the citizens taxes - ranging from a little under 30% up to almost 50%)only on the state of Alabama.

It is easy to point at small (population, not area) countries and go "Why can`t American be like that?" And the answer is we have way to many people to do something like this. And before someone starts to preach the reduce military spending sermon again think about this. If Norway was suddenly invaded, who would that ask for help? NATO. And who provides a large majority of the resources for NATO? The United States.

Face it, we pay the price of the military to keep things under control and this allows countries like Norway and Denmark and anywhere else you want to mention to focus more on health care.

Also thumbs up for Norway and the other Scandinavian countries they set a great example of how the standard of living should be in all countries

"Norway is cool and all, but no country is perfect. Norway does have a relatively large trend of alcoholism and alcohol-related illness. Which goes to show that everyone and everyplace has it`s share of good and bad points."

But cigarettes and alcohol is so expensive in norway! 20 dollars for a pack of cigarettes, and this shows that they are trying to prevent cancer and the same goes with alcohol diseases. i don`t know the price for alcohol, but you often see norwegians coming to denmark to buy alcohol. the danes just goes to germany...
I think the average dane starts drinking at about the age og 14. i did, and all of my friends did aswell. looking back, i regret it. Alcohol is quite a big part of scandinavia, but also very very dangerous. it is not against the law to buy alcohol, only selling it to people under the age 16 is illegal. in theori, you can buy cigs and alcohol at the age of 0.

I hadn`t heard that bit about Norway not wanting to hand over prisoners to the U.S.

Almost like how in Canada now the United states is now listed in a section of an official world travel brochure that lists countries where you have a possibility of being tortured. I almost wish I was kidding, but hell. We now live in a world where Barb Wire may just be the holy prophesy.

Our giant breasted blonde savior will come! Just you wait!!!!
