haha... held it in my hand, started to burn me so i tried to shake it off, but part of my skin melted or reformed... hurts but that was awesome!

i realized im not supposed to keep it on the palm of my hand for over 1 minute... and i know what your gonna say and yes, i was really intrigued by fire... especially since i could hold it...

What I`m telling you is that your wife is technically right. The blue part of the flame is the hottest, not the white part. But a manly man is more concerned about the real world – as we saw above (show her the graph), there`s more total heat in the tip of the flame, so that`s the part you want to use to light the fire. In other words, while she`s got a better grasp of theory, you`re going to get the fire lit sooner. I`m not saying you won`t get an argument as far as your bet goes.

Taken from http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mhot...

etc.

I still don`t know which way to think.

Hmm... would just like to ask.

Can someone tell me whether theres a difference between using Zippo fluid and Ronsonol Fluid for this fireball?

I want a confirmed answer please... coz I`ve seen "I think" all over, and I can`t find Ronsonol here in my area..... so I would just like to know.

Thanks a lot

It`s really hard to not get fluid on your hands if all you have is something out of a twist-cap bottle. You might want to burn the liquid off of your hands before you play with the ball. Hurts a lot less. /experience

def works, tried it and it was pretty fun. btw try it indoors, yeah the lighter fluid smells but the wind outside will make the flame go everywhere and burn your hand (experience) heh, but overall it was pretty cool. no need to even make a ball just pour some fluid on some pure cotton and fire. . whatever shape it is. though keep a bucket/bowl of water around.

omg!! this is sooo awsome im s0 trying it tomorrow... i just need to get some lighter fuel =( i dont have any of that...
and to Tomolenko: "Somethings telling me that he`s learnt from experience when it says "it may get your hands and they will also light up".."
he still wouldnt have burnt himself because the fire would die out when all the fuel he got in his hands is burnt...
i know cuz ive done it... only with hairspray on my hand though

alright the blue part of the flame in the part that`s going up (layman`s terms) is the hottest part, not the tip of the flame but the tip of the blue part, its what we use to stretch out glass tubes for spot marking, and has been said the cotton isn`t burning the fuel (lighter fluid, oil, alochol....whatever) is.... whoa, i sound preachy

I`m back. It worked great! The only problem i cam across is that after 20 seconds or so, it gets HOT. Perhaps alcohol burns hotter then lighter fluid? I do not know, but be warned it DOES get hot.

I just put my finger in the blue part of the lighter flame, I had to touche it in order to get burned. But thats the lighter, I think it`d be different with only a ball soaked from fluid.

this would work just fine without buning you. as a kid, i remember that i used to spray hairspray on my hand and set it on fire. it would not burn me untill the fluid was all burned up. the same principle applies here. since he does not have his hand soaked in any kind of flameable fluid, he has to move the ball around a little so that the fire does not burn him. uisng different flameables will have different results depnding on how hot the flame can get, and how quick the flame will burn through the fluid. if you try this, i would suggest using lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol, or nail polish remover since they all have relatively low burning temps. nail polish remover tends to burn up quicker though. if you are going to try this for the first time though, have a friend around just in case!!!!

as long as there`s lighter fluid remaining in the ball & string, neither will burn up. Just like lantern wicks, eventually it will be consumed, but it`s a slow process.

Just wanted to say, THIS WORKS! I went and cut up an old cotton sock, I used some brown thread and soaked it in tiki-torch oil. I havent tried holding on to one but the ball itself dosent burn at all.

it does work... been at parties where guys soak tennis balls in lighter fluid and toss them around... they`re nuts.

it makes a really cool sound, like a jet engine. also, at least with the tennis balls, they dont bounce normally... the end up stopping about 50 feet from where they should after hitting the ground

i did this but with my fingers... I know it may sound retarded but as long as you put it out before all the lighter fluid goes out, u will barely feel a think

Dynamics of the flame are pretty interesting. I remeber in Russia we actually had to learn all different parts of a flame...
Anyway, the reason he doesn`t get burned is because he never lets it stay in one spot for more than a couple of seconds. It`s still hot, mind you, but not quite hot enough to burn at the bottom.
What`s hot in a fire is the gas that is produced. Because it is a hot gas it is lighter than air and due to laws of density keeps moving upward. That is why the top is hottest. At the bottom gas goes around the sides and up, so most of the heat never touches the hand. Also, the reason you can close your hand around it to put out the flame is as your hand closes, you briefly wave away the hot gas and cut off oxigen needed for the burn. Just make sure to keep your fingers joined as you do it.
I blame all the "ooh`s" and "ahh`s" on America`s poor education system.

however holding the ball for too long in one place will burn you.
i dropped it on a carpet and the the carpet is stil ok. it didnt even burn

The hottest part of the "flame" is actually directly above it. At least that`s what I was told in 6th grade science.

Either way. This looks like a blast. I`m totally doing it.

hey, and if it burns your hands all you have to do is use the rest of the t-shirt to wrap up your hands and piss on them. Over time, doing these treatments will toughen up the skin. Of course, you may lose all your friends...the ones you didn`t catch on fire by throwing fireballs at them.

Did anyone else think "slingshot ammo" when they saw this? There has to be some fire-proof slingshots out there somewhere. And Aadam, yeah that`s what school learned me, but I`m pretty sure that the blue part has to be on the tip of the flame. Then again, I`m not a scientist.

Deaf Woman: a 2 foot by 5 foot peice of cloth would be 144 times bigger than a 2 inch by 5 inch peice of cloth. I don`t know that it would burn any hotter, or how much bigger the ball would be.

the string only there to make the ball not get undone.

you wont get burned, the best way to show you that is get a lighter, and ignite it, the move your finger underneath it as close as you can, you wont even feel heat since the heat rises. Also, when you hold the ball in your hand, the part your hand is on stops the air flow and basically shuts off, so your never actually touching the fire.

Thats pretty much it.
