More interesting than you"d think. Wait for the 4:11 mark when scientists actually excavate the ant colony. Weird stuff.

I can emphasize about the work involved in making one of those ant colonies, then it all being destroyed in an instant, but in the name of understanding, sometimes it needs to be done. Instead of complaining about it you all should find the means of preserving both the colony and understanding its infrastructure.

Its like the Peta idiots. If you don`t want harm to be brought to animals then find a way for us to do our research without having to use them as test subjects. Until then they should shut up or stop using the many technologies animal research brought them, including most medications.

As much as I`m in awe of the fantastic architecture, and everything, I`m kind of disturbed by the fact that they killed possibly billions of ants only to see what they had done. I`m pro stem cell research, but this was way more unethical in my mind. How far can we go in the name of science?

You know, that cement method would be a great form of extermination if one of those got too close to your home. It would be protecting humans, so it`s ethically sound. And we`d have a few giant cement statues for our museums!

Well, look at it this way: maybe the dude that owned the land was going to have them exterminated anyways, so at least when they all got murdered in their home, it wasn`t a complete waste, right? :-/

I think if mammals never showed up one of the arthropods would`ve became as if not more intelligent than us and much more sucessful. I always imagined if we found aliens (or they found us) they`d be socially similar to ants/bees or w/e. Imagine a species with no war, crime, waste, greed within itself and each individual spent almost 100% of it`s time to better it`s community... Just amazin`

So the ants moved over 40 tonnes of earth, just so some trummped up geek can go flood the whole colony with cement. Thats just destructive, hands up who now wants to go find out where that guy lives and pump his house full of cement killing his whole family, just so they can see what the inside of his house looks like.

I don`t think its the ants people feel sorry for as much as the whole city of ants that was destroyed. Yes there are massive amounts of billions of ants but its like destroying NYC and saying well there are still thousands of other cities and billions of people left. Ants aren`t equal to people in that sense but it is a shame to see something that intricate and something that took so much work to create destroyed. It seems like an awful waste.

Absolutely stunning! But a couple of questions - how do so many individual ants build something that to a human`s opinion has beend not only designed, but designed as by a single mind? Also, I presume ants haven`t always been so sophisticated (in the same way that humans haven`t always been so sophisticated) so when did they learn/discover that a) they require air or b) need to get rid of the CO2 and c) they can use the temperature of the dirt to circulate air? I know, I know millions of years blah blah, natural selection, but ants aren`t renowned for sticking their necks out and experimenting - we tend to think of them as automatons don`t we? Incredible. I eat meat so I don`t mind animals dying (so long as it`s as humane as possible) but the beauty of that nest - we almost need to reward the ants for it rather than just kill them. that said, if one bit me, I`d kill it.
Slo-o-o-o-wly.

Glad I didn`t watch it all the way through. I saw the first ant close up, and started reminiscing about Anty from "Honey I Shrunk the Kids", and then I got that bad feeling, that all of those ants were doomed, just like Anty. I remembered the heartbreak I felt when Anty saved the children from the Scorpion, sacrificing himself for his new human friends. So I couldn`t bring myself to watch it.

Sucks that it turned out poorly for the ants, but what else were they going to do? I mean, scientists study, and I`m pretty sure that killing the ants was less cruel than saving all of them and taking away their home. They just prevented the inevitable, really.

And think about how much we will learn from all of your new bestest ant friends. They`re martyrs of the insect world.

Not to say that I think killing ants is wrong... I admit to not sympathizing with them, and thinking of them as an annoyance. It`s just that to ruin something so amazing like that.... If only for the structure itself, they shouldn`t have touched it.

In all, it`s a fantastic structure, I`d like to add.

But I`d also like to remind the people who are claiming that ants are "stupid creatures" that have "a mental capacity high enough just to eat, dig, and sleep" that ants do many "human" things, such as farming, waging war, and communicating through both noise and motions. Only human ego would believe that ants cannot feel emotions or have an opinion.

While it`s certainly not going to kill the species in one action, the acceptance because "it`s science" is rather alarming. Remember the two headed dog? That was just science as well.

On a final note, I`m going to vivisect SlippySanta, because I`m a living thing, and they kill other living things. It`s only reasonable, and for science, so don`t sympathize for him.

Ants: To arms! To arms! were under attack by a giant white hose!

They start attacking it getting nowhere. Then out of nothing a flood of cement eradicates them all.

I want to see a vid of army ants battling something... This vid was cool to tho.

Alright, for all you ant-lovers out there...
Stop talking like every ant is able to reproduce! Only a few ants are born in a colony that are able to spread their genes, and they leave when it`s time to mate.
However, I`m disappointed at their use of concrete (though, in regards to size, I`m not sure what else they could have used)
I saw one entomologist on Animal Planet cast a colony out of zinc, but that colony had died out so there wasn`t anything to kill with molten metal.

Use a giant cat scan? >^..^< You leave my giant fat kitties alone! Why I oughta... not "giant cat" scan, but a giant "ct scan"? Oops! My mistake! ;-)
Seriously, they`d need to encircle the ant-city in order to scan it, causing just as much damage to the ants as the concrete did.
And yes it is impressive! Beautiful even. But the ant`s didn`t know any of that while they were making it. They just did what the hive-mind told them to do. AND they don`t have children, only the Queen reproduces. It`s like the ants are all sisters (or brothers) they don`t reproduce.
But their city is really really cool!

For all you fing morons complaining about killing the ants, you damn well better have never eaten a hamburger, a piece of chicken or anything else that was once alive. You also have better not ever dropped a bug bomb or roach bait to get rid of some insects or swatted a fly. Oh wait, you did all those things? Then STFU. There is nothing wrong with killing those ants. Ants do not have feelings, they are not precious little snowflakes you need to protect. In many places they are fried and eaten, so STFU about the mean old scientist who killed an ant colony. Nobody cares for good reason you whiny tards.

ok i am really impressed at that aswell but we are trying to personify the ants. They dont have board meetings and argue about where to build the next tunnel the simply have an inbuilt instinct to build each chamber depending on the flow of gasses in the hive. I`m not saying that it isn`t impressive but you might aswell cream yourselves over a fish swimming or a bird building a nest... ZOMG how did it know where to put the twigs and then to work out how to lay an egg its amazing!!!!
