Can the chimp write a mathematically rigorous description of the ordering principle of natural numbers? I think not.

I wonder how they convinced the college students to participate in this study, and if the method of motivation automatically washed out the smarter students.

The chimp averages 8 correct.

How long did it take him to get that good?

maybe its cause im 13 since it has to do with youth but i found this easy i beat the chimp on my first try and i think if you dont focus it helps

What`s going on here? Even with six months of training, three students failed to catch up to the three young chimps, Matsuzawa said in an e-mail.

He thinks two factors gave his chimps the edge. For one thing, he believes human ancestors gave up much of this skill over evolutionary time to make room in the brain for gaining language abilities.

The other factor is the youth of Ayumu and his peers. The memory for images that`s needed for the tests resembles a skill found in children, but which dissipates with age. In fact, the young chimps performed better than older chimps in the new study. (Ayumu`s mom did even worse than the college students).

calmelbourne, there must be something fishy if the data isn`t reflected outside the study.

Does anyone do their research?

"His performance in the tasks was superior to that of comparably trained university students"

The students in the experiment were trained as much as the chimp

I`m not sure about anyone else, but the only time I can catch all the numbers is when I`m not paying attention to any box in particular. It`s easy to beat the chimp after being able to actually see the numbers, since remembering the places of them is easy.

Completely agree with pabasa...perhaps if I would have spent a majority of my life being tested on numbers flashing for less than a second on a screen, I would have done better.

Yeah, the study is flawed because it doesn`t take practice into account. The chimp probably sat there 12 hours a day doing this so it can keep getting food for multiple days. The college students probably only got 1 or two trials.

Considering that most people here can beat the chimp on the 3rd or more try, the claim that the chimp is "smarter" when it comes to these things is a flawed conclusion. Clearly the human learns and adapts faster than the chimp and has a greater maximum potential. A chimp, after many trials, averages 8. However, a human given the same amount of multiple trials can consistently get 8-10.

I`m more interested in chimps vs. humans immediately after being treated with medicinal marijuana.

Nonlinear manner. Or that Ayumu can do what our brains do, but faster. Possibly because of his youth.

This was interesting: the first couple times I tried, I thought it was way too fast to even register the numbers, but after a couple of times, I was able to do it: 4 or 5 times in a row.

Straight from the article
"One chimp, Ayumu, did the best. Researchers included him and nine college students in a second test.

This time, five numbers flashed on the screen only briefly before they were replaced by white squares. The challenge, again, was to touch these squares in the proper sequence.

When the numbers were displayed for about seven-tenths of a second, Ayumu and the college students were both able to do this correctly about 80 percent of the time.

But when the numbers were displayed for just four-tenths or two-tenths of a second, the chimp was the champ. The briefer of those times is too short to allow a look around the screen, and in those tests Ayumu still scored about 80 percent, while humans plunged to 40 percent.

That indicates Ayumu was better at taking in the whole pattern of numbers at a glance, the researchers wrote."

This supports the hypothesis that chimps can do something humans aren`t able to do; something like absorb data in a nonli

I think what`s both funny and sad is that you people have to make up excuses because you failed in a flash game against a chimp.

when you try to remember where the numbers are, it gets much more difficult. If you stop thinking and just let your hand take over, ull get 10 out of 10. Its pretty cool how the brain works

At first I thought that there was not enough time to take in the numbers.. but after practice, practice, practice, it gets easy.
I think the chimp would have done this ad nauseam too, which is why it averages 8.

The chimp probably got an average of 8 because he saw a couple hundred instead of only like 10.

I`m smarter than a chimp - first try, 9, next try, 10. Hmm, the numbers do disappear quickly, BUT they were only numbers 1-10, and sometimes it was just common sense as to where they were. It was really easy for me. But it`s not such a great achievement, is it? WOW I can memorise some numbers and click on them - not exactly `I saved the world` worthy, is it?

^^ No, JeanaH, I never had to memorize a bunch of random numbers spread all over a computer screen that was shown a mere nanosecond, then, with the numbers hidden behind boxes, click them in ascending order with my mouse while I was in grade school.

Did you?

Just failed the first time, tied the second and won the third time. But like most of these things, practice helps a lot.

I bet if you let the college students practice for an hour, they`ld all have beaten the chimp. Or not all rather, perhaps only a fair majority.

I actually managed to get 8 right...apparently the chimp averages 8 too...amazing.

I noticed I barely had time to see the number, but nonetheless, the brain sees it and you just seem to know which number goes where...a .5 second flash and the brain notices and absorbs right away. Interesting.

Hellven. Its called print screen. Seriously the chimps were given the same ammount of time as we were but they were given from 1 - whatever. unlike us who were given a random set of numbers. eg. 7-13
