Jeez people, I`m sure the poster knows it`s not actually a tsunami - it`s just a figure of speech. Like a really f**kin big wave!

Thats off the coast of Maui, as dodoca mentioned its called Peahi, but if informally known as Jaws.
Its not a tsunami wave, just a wave that breaks on the outerbanks of the reefs outside Maui.

For the surfer, thats Laird Hamilton, who is the best big wave surfer (subjective)... and definately the most popular.

The reason they are doing tow-in surfing is because its impossible to catch waves that size (with the exception of Mavericks, Pipeline, Cyclops, Teahupoo and a few others) by paddling in when its huge.

If you want to see more big wave surfing type in a few of the names of the surf spots I listed above in any search engine.

No Fake, there`s a documentary about it, called "Riding Giants". Absolutely worth watching. Once there was a torrent...

This poor soul did not make it out alive. He had slipped off his surfboard and smashed his head against his board leaving him unconcious and drowned to his death.

This wave is called “Peahi” by the locals. Surf only if you dare. This is where world-class surf warriors risk their lives on the biggest waves in the world—up to 70 feet. it`s in Maui

Not a tsunami, tsunami waves are much faster, and in the open, much shallower.

flyingpixiex - yeah, I was reading a book on surfing. Besides being a place full of jagged rocks and coral reefs where you can easily smash your skull in, those areas also tend to be where sharks like to feed.

That guy is f*cking carzy. My heart was in my mouth. Surfing waves 1/10 that size is scary enough.

8a8azn, that is a tsunami like wave, because its in the middle of the ocean, hence why he has a jet ski take him out- if that wave were in shallow water or near shore it would be even bigger. I was watching a surf doc and this one was on it, some of these guys catch these waves and right where the end, is the rocks and coral sand bars, they are nuts... you should see the jet skis go into action when they go down though

You know, I grasp the concept of an "adrenaline rush", but between sh**tin` myself and nearly having a heart attack, I don`t think I`d like to be in that guy`s wetsuit.
