Two tesla coils zapping out the theme from SMB, the sounds are coming from the sparks--there are no speakers involved.

To deadman, I doubt it. I don`t know much about the properties of electricity but I`d imagine the movement of the bolt would resemble the path of the electrons which can be described as random at best. Look up the Uncertainty Principle.

I thought of the same thing as well, but the bolts seem to corresponds with the Uncertainty Principle, in that different sounds present the bolt in certain definable regions (such as striking the rod, ground and air).

Plus you can`t forget about naturally occurring charged particles in the environment. That would definitely attract the bolt as well.

Ok... If this was real wouldn`t one note correspond to a general shape of the bolt?

I cant believe how many people fell for that, that was not real and that is not how tesla coils sound when they zap ive been near them live and they make a loud noise even when they are not zapping... those got quite in between zaps so it was not really playing the mario tune.

The reason why people use old 8-bit game music for science demos like this one is rather simple: old NES music had only two of the 8 bit-channels of computing power devoted to sound, and those channels could only do one instrument at a time.

What makes the old NES themes especially memorable is their simplicity, and what made them good for the programmers is that they were designed to loop.

If you go and listen to the Tetris theme through shalar`s link, you`ll hear a *lot* more noise from the coils because they are trying to process multi-timbral audio signals, and it`s difficult to do with a 1-bit Pulse Code Modulator like a Tesla Coil. It`s like trying to play your mp3s through the PC speaker you have plugged into your motherboard pear the power pins.

Were I to do the Tetris thing, I would have used 4 coils to allow for the harmonies.

Seen several musical tesla coils before, but these ones have a really nice sound, much cleaner than many others but still obviously electrical.

Plasmasonic (youtube it) have some really awesome ones, they`ve got to the point where it sounds just like a regular speaker.

BrettIsPyro: are you sure it wasn`t an electrostatic generator? They have high volts but low current (amps). Something with really high amps will kill you. It only takes 0.1 - 0.3 amps across your heart to stop it.

Dumbasses this won`t kill you if you touch it. I`ve done it before. The community college made one and my school went there to learn about science and we got to play with one. The electricity is a lot of volts and pleny of amps (should kill you) but its at extreamly high hertz (cycles per sec) so it just travels around your skin, never penetrating. A tessla coil was actually designed to power things wirelessly so if you take like a light bulb near it, it will light up. Pretty cool really. I would like to know how tey got those sounds though so if someone could explain that...please do.

That was very cool.

Call me pessismistic but that could have been easily done (well at least not as difficult) by just programing the teslas to do it to that rhythm and dub a strange version of Mario Bros over the top of it on the video.

But fingers crossed it was real: I would be too disapointed if it was. That`s one sexy video you`ve got there, kudos to IAB

I am asking, tell me more about Telsa Coils?
This amazing, but I am more of a biology girl... how do they work (in more detail)?
Obviously I am going to do research so don`t yell please, but it is more palatable if someone else explains as well:)

Tesla coils are basically electrical transformers. The sparks are arcs of electrical current leaping through the air. To activate the coils, you use very high voltages and currents. You can change the frequency of the current in the primary coil, which is how you alter the pitch of the sound created by the sparks. That`s how they make music with it.

even though that was quite good - why does it ALWAYS have to be the Super Mario Bros song? Even so, this isn`t the only Mario song out there, and definitely not the only cover that`s been done - there must be hundreds, most are terrible and only make the song worse.

Hooking up that raw power to an amplifier would be commiting suicide!

Unless you used a somehow electroshock-proof PA system. in which case you wouldnt need a guitar amp :P
