Well, it was decent (aka, they were together and reasonably on tune) I suppose. But I have the sneaking suspicion that Cobain did not intend for his song to be played by a classical orchestra... probably because you`d end up with something like this...

^^I agree with ManilaRose, not even a whole orchestra can beat Cobain`s guitar.
This song was a breakthrough just because of that.

Ummmm Cobains guitar was nothing special, not at all. anyone who can play a combination of power chords could learn every Nirvana song in about 3 hours.
Cobains uniquely out of pitch but in tune voice filled with pain and hurt was his key to success.. His guitar had nothing to do with any of it. In fact most of nirvana`s riffs that most people hum are bass riffs.

still tho, this orchestra cover sucked

Complexity is great, but simplicity can do a lot for a song as well. Sure, all "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is comprised of power chords, but the way he plays them embodies the nature of the song. So aggressive and manic, sometimes slipping into unrelated suspensions.

Don`t say his guitar had nothing to do with it.

Well I wouldn`t say his "simplicity" had anything to do with it either, definitely not in a Miles-sense of things. When it came down to it, it was his pain and suffering that spoke to the 90`s disenfranchised youth, and I`m sure to many, him playing out of tune, and very, very simple rifts might have highlighted the music. but yeah...... seriously dude, he was not a great guitarist... like in the least bit

^^^It was a high school orchestra (strings), not a band (winds)...and don`t most HSes have stage stuff like that? haha

Anyway, I think it`d be AMAZING performed by a professional orchestra, but I hate listening to bad string instrumentalists. Ugh. If you like this type of thing, you should check out the String Quartet CDs. They do everything from Nirvana to Fall Out Boy to Green Day to Bon Jovi.

Neat idea to bring back a rock classic. Maybe if the orchestra was a little more skilled it would have come of better, but they did a fair job.

I also agree with hab1b, Cobain`s vocals made more of the track than the guitar. I`m not saying that the guitar had nothing to do with it, but you must admit no cover has ever come close to the original.

Good lord, this wasn`t a band. It`s an orchestra. Get the terminology right.

Apart from that, yeah, the beginning was very rough. Also, I think the violins and violas sounded much better than the `cellos did. All in all, it wasn`t bad, but it wasn`t great. However, I think they definitely did a pretty good job for a high school orchestra.

for a high school orchestra that was not close to good. Then again, I remember our top tier orchestra class tended to play more complex classical pieces and the tier below them played easier, sometimes douche-ier pieces. I think this is their lower tier group. If that`s the case, eh, s`alright. It`s a douchey song in their hands, though.

You`re correct on the bass guitar point. My school`s "marching band" does, but the Concert band does not. I actually play in my school`s replacement of the Marching Band.

It was very good for a High School Orchestra. There`s no way my school could pull this off, even we had enough people to play the strings parts.

I`m in a highschool orchestra where do do play rock music and other popular stuff a great deal of the time. In the past we`ve sampled from the Eurythmics, Green Day, The Beatles, various movie sountracks, and Led Zeppelin. So I can say from experience that rock music CAN sound AMAZING played by a string orchestra.

This wasn`t amazing. It was decent. Bowing was done well, but there were pitch problems with the violins on and off, especially when they first picked up the bows. They must`ve used picks for the plucking in the beginning to get the strums, but they weren`t quite together. I get the impression that they focus a bit more on showmanship than musicianship. Not that it was bad musically, they just seemed overly showy in some respects.

    Kurt.

"Was it just me, or were there any brass or woodwinds? I only heard strings and percussion."

It was an orchestra- therefore, no, there were no brass or woodwinds.

"Heh, you`re all idiots anyway, the song actually has nothing to do with 90`s disenfranchised youth, since it`s a frank sinatra cover in the first place..."

Yes, because that`s why the song writer credits are always to Cobain, Grohl, and Novoselic.
If it was a Sinatra cover, they wouldn`t have gotten away with that.

It sounds like John Wayne should come riding up right from the beginning, I couldn`t finish it.

    -----------------------------------------------
It`s not necessarily his guitar, but what he did for music.
And I dont think Cobain would mind considering he was high most of the time.
Besides this is probably the only Nirvana song those kids even know.
There are a lot better Nirvana songs.

bleh. okay. the cello section was weak and out of tune during their soli, but hell it`s better than anything i ever play in my school orchestra.
i agree with what a lot of people have said though, a lot is lost when it`s transcribed for an orchestra, especially a school orchestra :\

adding onto what saturnia107 said, if this were performed by professional musicians it could be a lot better. the Vitamin string quartet probably does the best covers of this type of stuff. they`ve covered more bands than you`d think was possible.

I thought this was epic...well, mostly.

I still heard that kid that was off and the one that was in the wrong key for like, half the song.

otherwise it was good though. Better than the band class at my school.
