Apparently Malaysia doesn`t allow child labor and the factory have a building that doesn`t seem Malaysian architecture and is even doesn`t look like Malaysian weather. I know it`s a joke but it really destroys GAP and Malaysia`s reputation...this is a really sick joke...

Oh my god... I can`t believe they would force kids to work like that and then try to put a spin on it like that. And the news reporting it like it`s a good thing, I wonder if GAP is funding their station. Someone should do something!

(god sarcasm is hard via the internet.)

Wendy, here;s something that might help you understand what the problem is:

Many of these children are bonded laborers. For the poor, there are few sources of bank loans, governmental loans or other credit sources, and even if there are sources available, few living in poverty qualify. Here enters the local moneylender; parents exchange their child’s labour to local moneylenders (Human Rights Watch 1996, 17). Since the earnings of bonded child labourers are less than the interest on the loans, these bonded children are forced to work, while interest on their loans accumulates. A bonded child can only be released after his/her parents makes a lump sum payment, which is extremely difficult for the poor (Human Rights Watch 1996, 17). Even if bonded child labourers are released, "the same conditions of poverty that caused the initial debt can cause people to slip back into bondage" (International Labour Organization 1993, 12).

There`s something that I do not understand about child labor. Do these children have a choice whether they want to work in these factories or not? If they do, then shouldn`t we leave them be? However sad it is that they have to work under these conditions for money, and can`t go to school, isn`t it still their choice in the end? What happens if no companies want to buy the things they are making? Won`t the factory close down, leaveing them without a job? That would be even worse, since they will have no money at ALL.
Please, correct me if I am wrong, but that is just how I see things.
Also, I DO feel for these kids, so please don`t see me as a heartless bitch.

This is a great example of the Onions satire actually turning out to be true. It has happened before and I am sure it will happen again. And yes I do find it funny how some people take the Onion for real news.

ok, people. The joy of satire is that is takes a real issue and brings it to people`s attention by making it funny. Gap have been lambasted more than once for actually using child labour in sweat shops (as do many cheap high street retailers). So on that level this was not a fake report, and it is shocking. Obviously they would never talk about it like that - which is where the joke lies.

Ok, my educational rant over.

I do wonder how some people can cope with going through life taking everything so literally! Get some cynicsm america!
