oh man :( the home schooled people typically grow up with a serious lack in social skills...

when will parents realize that doing that to their kids could most likely cause them to be socially inapt?!

It seems that these kids are like...showdogs. They`re home schooled, completely sheltered, they have no idea what the real world is like, and their parents just breed and tutor them for spelling bees and mathematical competitions.

...would that constitute as a crime against humanity?

doubtful, just because she is a good speller does not make her good at everything. example, could she do my vector calculus hw for me tonight? these kids are trained to be good spellers. to say that theyre good at everything is to say that tiger woods is also a really good basketball player...

BigBonny: There`s some story behind it. I`m sure wikipedia or something might have info on it.

Nidonemo: I was about to say something like that.
And, yeah, it kind of does constitute a crime against humanity... but so do many other things people aren`t willing to take some sort of acti
    on against.

Guys: The UM at the end was her pronouncing the word the second time. It works like this:
Say the word (To prove you can pronounce it correctly) --> Spell the word --> Say the word again to signify that you`re done

Either way this kid will no doubt grow up with no social skills... and in an attempt to grow them will probably fail miserably.
Meh... she`s probably about 18 now anyway.
    Might hate her parents

Btpanther: WRONG SHE"S GOOD AT EVERYTHING CAUSE SHE CAN SPELL
Maybe she could help me write an encryption algo for a C program I have in Vim right now.

I think homeschooling is about the worst thing you can do to a child. Sure, public school might be daycare, but in the long run social skills are more necessary than technical skills- after all, you won`t get a job at all unless you know how to talk to the employer.

I`ve been homeschooled my entire life. Being social and talking to people is something I did indeed have to learn, but it`s not too hard.
I`d go off on a rant about all the idiot public-schoolers making sweeping generalizations, insulting us, et cetera but... every single other darned homeschooler I know IS socially inept. There`s no choice but to correlate the two thanks to the other idiots.

I was homeschooled and I started college at age fifteen. Contrary to popular belief about homeschoolers, I do have a social life as do many of my homeschooled friends.

If you think all homeschoolers are socially awkward, you`re very ignorant. If you think everyone who goes to public school has a rollicking social life, you`re in denial.

You`re right, I`ll be sure to blame my parents when I get my Associates Degree by the time I`m eighteen. If only I could have had all those friends that every high school kid has.

I usually don`t post comments, but I feel this one deserves some insight from somebody who was homeschooled since Kindergarden.

First off, I`d like to address all the people who think that just because a person is homeschooled, they are automatically socialy inept to the extreme. This is simply not true. Yes, I do know some people who were homeschooled, who don`t really know how to function in "the real world" but I know a heck of a lot of people who went to conventional school who were the same or even worse.

I am not socially inept. I am now a senior in high school, and I am taking honors classes at a community college. I have made friends there... This is my first quarter. I have friends around my neighborhood, and friends from work. I have no problems interracting with other people.

I am generally an easygoing person, things don`t normally get to me. The exception for that is when ignorant people judge my choice of education on their very limited circumstanc

Thanks Miakoda, thought I was going to have to post something like that.

People don`t seem to understand that there are people like that all over, whether or not they are homeschooled makes very little difference. Most likely she is autistic. For those that don`t know what that means, autistic people are very brilliant in specific things, but in most others, especially social skills they are lacking. She was probably homeschooled so she wouldn`t be subject to bullying in school.

Well said JVCC. This homeschool bashing garbage just pisses me off.

I also was home schooled. Why? Not because there was something wrong with me, but the school nearby was such a dump and well known for being behind. The amount of problems was simpling appalling, this including knives, car theft, assault (not simple bulling here) and more. Screw that. My parents felt they could do a better job, and they were right. I have no problems socially, other than putting up with ignorant dips-hits that are produced in schools like those I mentioned above.

I hold a 3.9 GPA, go to college fully paid on scholarship, have 2 years study abroad at a top university in Japan, and have traveled all over the world for free on scholarships and been places others only read about in their outdated books. I`ve been on TV many times, and done 7 newspaper interviews concerning study I have done. I am now preparing for graduate school and a Ph.D program in Japan as well.

Yup, I suuure do regret homeschool

Ok, while this girls is a spaz (I`ve seen the vid before), and I do know some other crazy homeschoolers, not all of them are like this. I was homeschooled through Jr. High, and I can say confidently that I was not sheltered at all! In fact, the word "homeschooling" was kind of an oxymoron for my family, cause we were never home! We went to museums and took trips to historical places in and out of the US for me to learn about them. And I was with friends most of the time, too. For most homeschooling families, it`s not like you`re stuck at home all day with your mom giving you lectures! And not to sound snooty about any of it, but myself and a few close friends who were also homeschooled for most of their life have better social skills that a lot of kids who were brought up in the public school system. So just keep in mind, this girl is the exception, not the rule! It`s just that the spazzes get the attention!

I could care less if you believe me slinky0. I find it a compliment that you don`t. I also consider everything a blessing that I have been as lucky in life as I have been. (This coming from a non-religious person)

Most kids didn`t have the opportunities I did when I was growing up. They get stuck in crap schools where they waste their life away with no support from the garbage school system in the USA. It`s crap in Japan and other places in the world too, but somehow they still learn the basics. At least the University system in the United States is the best in the world... if you can afford it.

By no means have I gotten where I am alone. I owe a lot to teachers, my parents, friends and many who have helped along the way. I made sure not to waste it.

If you consider a high GPA, going to college on scholarships, studying abroad, traveling the world and graduate school deluded visions of grandeur, you have a damn low standards for life. I consider this simply getting an education.<

What an idiot. Honestly, you are so much smarter than us? I have never been homeschooled, nor do I know of anyone who has been, but what a sweeping generalisation to make!

And I`d be fairly confident in saying that I`m probably smarter than you. Yes, fair enough, you may be more nerdy, I prefer having fun and seeing friends, but at the end of the day, you need a fair balance. I would die if I was told I was going to be homeschooled. Why be on your own and away from your friends, if you can get a brilliant education WITH your friends?

I love how everyone thinks that homeschoolers are retards. Statistically, homeschoolers are smarter than kids who WENT to public school, AND have more MEANINGFUL relationships during their life times because they never underwent social pressure. I was homeschooled, ironically so was my fiance` and best friend, and we all have TONS of friends, are QUITE smart (we all either got diplomas or past the GED) and none of us are retards... I`ve known lots of kids/now adults who were homeschooled and they are all doing QUITE well. A couple are married, (she`s a punk) a few are making 30$ an hour, etc... None of us were ever "too weird" for social activities, etc. So, what`s the big deal? O_o... I know lots of YOUNGER kids who are homeschooled now, and I must say, compared to the kids in public school, they`re a lot more "well spoken" and a lot more POLITE.

I`ve been homeschooled since about the middle of 8th grade. I did find in public school. I don`t feel like typing out the long story, but just to make this short, homeschooling is boring. There isnt much to do around here when im done with school. My gf went to public school and i was fine around all of her friends. So i think some kids struggle with it while others dont. To say that they are all like that is like saying every white person dislikes a black person.

We have our stereotypes too. Goth, emo, etc. Pregnant teenagers.

But I`m so glad I don`t go to an institute every day. One of the private schools I was supposed to go to has kids committing suicide, doing drugs, becoming sexually active, etc.

    ok.

it is a fact that if you do not involve yourself in everyday contact with people, you will not grow with the social skills needed. (if i dont go to school, i dont learn.)

some home schooled people may do this, but the majority do not get outside of their family much- and have significantly less social skills than the average person. Not all, but some.

probably the majority (posters that say they are in college at 15 - most likely you.)

I find it funny that the homeschooled complain about how everyone has these ridiculous pre-conceived notions about their education. They mock others when they haven`t the first idea about what school is like. I went to a private school and public school, and now go to an acclaimed public university. You know what? I never "waste time in the halls," and certainly didn`t have an issue with the cafeteria lady (get spell check "donk") because I had better things to do (like learn in my AP courses) and brought my own lunches. At least know what you`re talking about. As for "gance," no one cares about your exploits - whether real or imagined. I`ve traveled around the world too, and I also completely pay for my education and living expenses. You don`t see me naming off everything I have accomplished because I know what I am capable of and don`t have to be pompous on the internet to make myself feel better. Sorry, I had to call these idiots out.

I`m homeschooled but man I`m not like that!
And why do all the kids that win spelling bees always seem like mental reatardationed people?
