Am I the only one who didn"t know about this?

If I had a car and I didn`t know which side the gas tank was on, I would write it on a post-it note and stick it to my dashboard. Bingo, problem solved almost effortlesly.

I wish I had known about that before I decided to stop driving.

>>they should put a gas cap on both sides going to the same tank. <<

Great idea. Oh, BTW, my `95 GMC Safari van has the filler on the left side, and the pump handle on the qauge is on the right. Oh well....

i just created this account to say it is wrong, i drive a `99 Chevy Malibu and the needle points to the left and the filler neck which is the correct term is on the right

AntON: "they should build all the cars with gas tank on the same side..."

I agree, that or they should put a gas cap on both sides going to the same tank. Would definitely help at busy gas stations.

i totally forgot that most of the US pumps their own gas.

i`d probably remember what side of the car it was on if i had to do it myself.

Apparently Nissan never got the memo. My Altima`s tank is on the left - the fuel light has the pump on the right.

1 pioneer station in ontario canada can reach the other side of my tercel. so if all other spot are taken, i can go in wrong side and still fuel up :)

I remember the good ol days when my dad`s car had the gas tank behind the rear license plate. It didn`t matter which side of the pump you were on.

This is entirely false, sorry to those of you who believe it. I have an 05 Accord, and the gas tank fill is on the drivers side, but the little pump icon has the hose on the right.

ps my truck comes with 2 exhaust pipse so that doesn`t really help either.

my trucks gauge is vertical and standardly the tank is on the left but mine is on the right side and my car points to the left but the tank is on the right side so I`ll stick to just remembering which side it`s on.

"Another helpful tip: The gas tank is always on the side opposite of the exhaust pipe."
Wouldn`t it be quicker to look for the gas cap rather than the exhaust pipe?

as for the article: I hate people that put out bullsh*t stories like this and swear it`s true because they`re smart enough to "figure out" something that no one else has.

This just simply isn`t true, if it were, my gas cap would be on the right side . . . but no. In order to fill my car I have to roll down a passenger window, insert the nozzle and pump my gas directly on the floor for the car to absorb.

never heard of this before, but it seems to be wrong. 2001 toyota tacoma, 1999 accord and 1994 honda prelude disproves this theory. That`s 3 out of the 4 cars in my driveway.

2 solutions: Buy a `70s or early `80s GM car. The cap is under the license plate.

or

Just memorize where the thing is before you even get in the car.

From my 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan:

You can also see, faintly, the warning light for gas. It`s got the same icon with the gas hose going off to the right.

my gauge is like the one anton posted, but my "light" is nothing more than a orange warning light that says fuel (not an icon), WHERE IS MY TANK????

oh i know i remember, its not that hard. and i drive different cars all the time, just have a look before you get in, and if you cant remember....there is something wrong.

yeah, i agree with wafuu, people are not very observant...

My mom was just in an accident and has been using a rental car. However, the rental car has a digital screen that shows the fuel tank`s gas level. So what does she do then?
Ha.

(It`s on the left, btw.)

as the picture shows in the comments, there`s a freaking arrow telling you where your gas tank is. I mean cmon. No wonder we have so many wrecks, no one is observant

My car has the gauge on the left and the fuel cap on the right.

Yeh that petrol rule doesnt work for my car either.. Not only if u go the wrong way but also if all the other bowsers are full.
I dont think its that hard to remember which side its on and if your that stupid just pop the tanks lid and have a look.

that is the first thing i have actually found "useful" on this site! i`ll be so ticked if it turns out not to be true...

i just bought a new car and can never remeber which side the gas tank is on plus i always confuse the lights and windshield wiper turn on sticks thingies around. ya know, so i turn on the wipers instead of the lights every night. *sigh*

yeah, most of the newer cars have the arrows pointed in the direction of where the gas tank is. Infact my Durango went as far as printing it on there "Gas tank opening on this side."

And even so, this is only useful to people who rent cars on a regular basis. And even then it`s been proven that the icon isn`t always right. Infact there`s no relation between the two really. Besides, with the bigger vehicles, most gas stations have extra long hoses.

well, that doesnt make sense...shouldnt it be the other way around?
it would make sense if thats where the gas comes from, so it would be the other side of the car
