Pretty cool. I just "helped" donate 1000 grains of rice. Although, I don`t know why they can`t just go out and donate at least a few thousand dollars rather than some grains of rice.
Hmmm... gets kind of fun after a while though... man i need some sleep.

I refuse to do this. The answer to world hunger, ironically enough is NOT to feed all the hungry people. People with full bellies multiply.. then you have to feed MORE people... Starvation, and disease is the worlds way of equalizing a population to it`s enviroment. If you really want to help them, educate them, and hand out condoms.

^ because they dont wanna bother with them secretly, i like the idea but it seems stupid if they have enough money to donate 10 grains of rice everytime someone puts in a correct answer then they should just donate 1 million USD to that place... btw does it ever specify where they ship those 10 grains off? 1 grain to every 3rd world country they are supporting im guessing... yea this is doing alot...

This is from the website FAQ:

If you have the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?

We are not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 10 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.

before anyone else criticizes this website, stop. no, giving food may not be the answer. no, we can`t be sure of where the rice is going. Maybe it is to only 3 third world countries that support the companies involved. maybe.

but it`s something. and i don`t know about you, but there have been a lot of times in which I, for one, wished I could do something to change the world. But it`s such a monumental task that few ever get around to taking action. It`s much easier to not donate any rice than to set up this project and at least TRY to make some kind of difference.

this is SOMETHING, and to criticize these companies for trying to make sure that children do not STARVE to death in conditions unfathomably worse than our own is DISGUSTING.

    Ok, lets do the math.

    100 grains of rice = 2 grams.
Now 1 Kg of rice = Rs 20 per kg (approx)
    = $ 0.50

So the donation per page is = 10 grains = $0.0001.

In other words, a hundred correct answers will donate 1 cent to the charity.

I believe the advertising income is many hundred times more than that.

By feeding them you HELP MORE people suffer. THink about it a minute. Healthy people reproduce. If they can`t take care of themselves now, they certainly can`t take care of anymore. They reproduce because they`re ignorant. Teach them. Teach them how to farm, teach them how to find water, teach them how to cure their diseases, and most of all, teach them how to use a condom. Seriously. The condom will solve more problems than anything else. Less babies = fewer mouth to feed, and far far fewer diseases, like aids ect... Wake up people. If you think clicking a few links here and there is going to do anything at all, you really need to give your head a shake.

talltale: and by refusing to feed them, you are battling suffering by using suffering (passiveness). Compassion is tempered with rationality; I don`t want them to suffer, but I also want to teach a man to fish so he can eat for a lifetime. Your method like I mentioned earlier immediately reminds me of Swift`s urging the Irish to eat their own children. His point was rationality taken to an extreme may seem ideal, but is utterly inhuman and monstrous. We are humans, not machines. The golden rule is essential. Compassion may be uncomfortable, but compassion is something worth dying for.

I agree with Chiaroscuro and Agausixio. There is a vicious cycle of poverty, and education will help, but so will nourishment. How can people learn if they`re starving? And if children are fed, maybe they will live to go to school, and then they will be able to educate others.

    Chiaroscuro:

It`s a circular argument. And no, I`m not saying feed their own children to them. But people WILL die, and people WILL suffer one way or another. Teaching them to survive on their own, and within their means is by far the more humane decision. Lets look at some math. Say there are 100 people, who are all starving. The farms they work have enough to feed 25. (You are aware they do have SOME food right?) Do you send them more food? Sure.. then you have 200 people. Oh.. wait.. food ran out.. their farms still feed 25. Hmm.. 175 people bite the dust unless you send MORE food... OH! 400 people! 375 people suffer and die! On and on it goes. Whats this? 1st world countries are tired of spending every dime they have on feeding starving people? Never mind the fact that the majority of people living in first world countries wouldn`t part with 10 bucks a month for the cause, especially if it ment giving up potato chips...

Then what happens? They ALL die.

Or.. do you let those 75 die, and teach them how to make their farms produce enough food for 50.. 100, a thousand people.. teach them how to cure, and prevent their diseases... teach them how to live withing the limits of their land, economy, and food supply. Teach them about looking to the future, instead of multiplying and spreading disease amongst themselves.

Yeah. People are gonna die, one way or another. But which is more humane? Which is right?

I suppose there isn`t any real answer. And no, I don`t think I`m a strong enough person to look a starving child in the eye and not give him my sandwich... no one is.

    And thats the problem.

Think what you may. I see deferring any help that is within our means as immoral and unjustifiable. Just because death is an inevitable thing does not excuse us from human generosity. Make no mistake, I`m as mad as you are that some in the poorer nations procreate without care for the future. However, letting them die is easier than instituting reforms within that economy. As long as there are alternatives -- electricity for instance -- that will make their life easier and less painful, then we should pursue them with every ounce of our willpower. So what I`m saying is that we should help, we should educate, and most of all, never allow death to be any resort.

Lets use a small African community for example. If we said that they should not reproduce, get educated and such..then what?! Die out...?

Nice idea but 10 grains of rice per question isn`t a lot considering their are A LOT of starving people out there who don`t have food. It`s a nice idea though, it should be a bowl of rice per question instead lol.

I got this idea, if instead the money from the ads goes to buying a few computers and cable internet then we can send that over to the hungry people. And then they can do this themselves, educating them and feeding them at the same time :D

If everyone lived like the average American, the Earth would run out of natural rescources before a generation ended and we would all die. There will always be billions of poor unless they stop breeding like freakin rabbits. Giving them food HELPS them breed like rabbits, expending Earth`s rescources more, causing more suffering, losers like you donate more, they keep having babies they can`t support, more suffering so we donate more....eventually it gets so bad there`s nobody left to donate, they all starve, and the few left begin the cycle again. I hope you enjoyed donating five cents to help world surffering.

Hmmm... gets kind of fun after a while though... man i need some sleep.
    _________________________________________________
I wanted to figure out how the hell this worked so I went to the FAQ and found this Who pays for the donated rice?
The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at FreeRice.

If you have the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?
We are not sitting on a pile of rice¯you are earning it 10 grain

I was doing this and I just realized - who do they send the food to? The governments of the 3rd world countries? If so, then the food is not going to get to the people as the government is usually corrupted and they will end up feeding themselves instead of the people.

I`m at 16420 grains. I always get words wrong in the low 40`s and don`t usually drop below mid 30`s. I`m learning some words which is pretty cool. As for donating the rice, those people on the whole are pretty screwed with or without donations, but if they are actually getting them, then at least some of them won`t be hungry for a couple of meals. And good luck educating them and getting them to stop breeding like rabbits. Those people are so poor that sex is practically the only recreation they have.

Sorry to say people but TallTale is right, well almost right. Human society has only recently began to seperate themselves from the wild. Over the course of the entire earth`s history "advanced humans" have only been here a VERY short time. Before us nature had a very effective system of population control. Natural selection. If there was not enough food people died. If there was food people flourished. Once the population became to large food became scarce and people died once again. Plain and simple. This process ensured that Earth could sustain life practically forever by balancing out the popluation. Since the Agricultural revolution humans have removed themselves from this system. Now, in present day we face the issue of world hunger. The fact is that sending food on this website seems at first like a great thing. You will feed people who will survive because of you. What we dont realise is that by sending food we are causing them to reproduce. Now instead of 1000 mouths

...To feed we now have 2000 mouths to feed. So we send more food, the population sustains itself for a while and reproduces. Now we have 4000 more people to feed. We once again send enough food to do this and so on and so fourth until the population increases to a rate at which we cant send food to sustain it, thus MORE people die of starvation than there would have been. If you simply look at what you are doing you are actually making world hunger a larger problem instead of fixing it. The fact is quite possibly if no food was ever sent to starving countries there may not be world hunger today. They are living in a world of natural selection, a world in which us "advanced" humans lived in hundreds and thousands of years ago, however the process has been tampered with and is thus failing due to out "efforts" to end world hunger. Now to TallTales point about contraceptives and knowledge...

...This is something we would do to help them along to become "civilized" and "advanced" among us. What we don`t realise is this...Plain and simple whether you like to admit it or not TO TRULY END WORLD HUNGER and RESTORE NATURES BALANCE its NOT them who need to change by being "educated or birth controlled" is US. The "advanced" people. Everyone can agree our environment is being destroyed. Our ways of lives how we eat, live, and so on is further destroying the balance of the earth. Soon,
(and if you doubt this you are VERY wrong), earth will not be able to sustain life on this planet and it will be the end of humanity. We are sealing maybe not our own personal fate but the fate of the next generation(s). Through our refusal to be part of natures natural and VERY EFFECTIVE population control system we have ensured that eventually the world will end. So the only REAL way to end "world hunger" and "The population problem" i

...is to return to the way humans were thousands of years ago and follow natures law of natural selection. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY. However this is very unlikely, and I admit that even I would not be able to return to this style of living. It seems hopeless and it probably is. So you decide, we can either bring these people into "The Future" and show them how to grown their own food which will lead to rapid evolution until they are as "advanced" as our civilization and further throw off the delicate blanace of life on this planet or WE can change. We can take our fates out of out hands and back into gods hands. The way he undoubtably wanted life to be. Everything I wrote here was inspired by a book called "Ishmael" for those who have read it I`m sure you have a more in depth understanding of what I am trying to say. To those of you who havn`t read it I HIGHLY recomm
