Well after reading these comments I`ve come to the conclusion that a lot of you are sheltered moron hippies! I already knew that though, the real revelation was that some of you *actually have* common sense and an ability to judge things properly. Congrats.

Aftershock still destroyed you all. Man I want to have that guy`s babies.

Puppies... consider this just for a minute. You are getting your information from a news article. Do you think that maybe THEY got it wrong, and not the police? Unless you read the actual police report, and not the news reporter`s version of the report, you can`t say they cop was not telling the truth. I`ve seen it too many times... Maybe the news people are in a hurry to get the story out, so they quickly read... "the officer fired through the windshield at the person trying to run him over, and hit him two times..." So that reported says that he fired twice.

I find it hard to believe that the officer would say that he fired only twice, when he probably reviewed the video himself before writing the report. Also, his supervisor would review the report, and after seeing the video would know that it would not be accurate, so have the officer fix his report. News people are just idiots in general, so I would feel safer saying they screwed up rather than the police.

This genuinely shocked me. I usually can`t stand cops, since the ones in my area are crooks. I didn`t watch this and think that the cops were jerks or that the guy didn`t deserve what happened to him.
I just can`t believe it got that far. It makes me want to cry. I guess I`m a bit of a weak heart tonight.

State laws and police department policy typically let officers use deadly force to defend themselves or others from the threat of death or serious injury. Deadly force also is allowed to prevent the escape of a suspect in a violent felony who poses an immediate threat to others

fire at least 6 times.

I`m not saying this was wrong and i fully agree with his actions, also i have nothing but sympathy for hard working police forced to quit their jobs because of heat from the media or "cop haters" on the net. But if a simple report to the media cannot even be accuratly described then it raises the question was it a simple mistake or were they fudging the truth to make it sound like the cop showed more control than he did.

And then to cap it all off they go and upload the video to the net. Ha morons

A lot of these accusations of wrongful arrest or un-needed force being used could be stopped if the officers in question stopped making up blatant lies as i have seen several videos where the officer was unaware he was being recorded and then either reported a slightly changed version of events or just took a trip to fairy land and blatantly lied to justify his actions.

Ok sometimes the officers may have misheard or misinterpreted a situation and be telling the truth as they see it but sometimes they are just talking bull.

As for the smartarse who posted the link to the police report on the second page of this thread WHY DON`T YOU READ IT YOURSELF.
"After another collision, the car stopped again, and an officer attempted to arrest Bennett. When Bennett tried to hit the officer with the car, the officer ended up on the car`s hood and fired twice, hitting Bennett at least once."

Mmmmmm fired twice did he, i`m pretty sure every single person in this thread saw him fir

"Yeah, the guy was running, but I don`t think they were justified in killing the guy."

So let me get this straight. You are chasing a guy for miles and miles at 100MPH+. You finally ram him off the road (the only way you`ve been able to stop him so far). You jump on top of the car and draw your weapon and tell the driver to stop. The driver doesn`t.

What do you think the driver is going to do?

A) Pull over on the side of the road and stop peacefully.
B) Take the officer to Denny`s and treat him to a free dinner.
C) Try to escape, regardless of the fact that it may cost the officer his life.
D) You`re retarded. The answer is C.

There is no "other option". Either you are thrown from the car at a rapid speed into the pavement, resulting in serious injury or death, or you stop the driver. Any hesitance, any second thought, any pacifist act can and will get you killed in a situation like that.

"why do american police think they could put innocent people in danger, just to get the criminals."

Not catching criminals puts the innocent people in much more danger.

"Yeah, they did something wrong. I know plenty of ways to stop a driver. The easiest would be to shoot out his tires."

Yeah, so then he can run you over with flat tires. Please. Cap the murderous SoB cop killer. I don`t feel sorry for him. If a cop draws a gun on you, you don`t react by putting the cop`s life in danger.

"...many states have regulations against drawing a weapon against a driver unless the driver is using a deadly weapon besides the vehicle itself."

What a crappy law. Whoever wrote it needs to be "assaulted" by a vehicle. Don`t worry, it doesn`t count as a "deadly weapon", he`ll be fine. /sarcasm

Seems to me they didn`t have to kill the guy. At the beginning of the video, the cop said the guy tried to ram him. I didn`t see it like that. Yeah, the guy was running, but I don`t think they were justified in killing the guy.

j-allen. Now you are getting the picture, if more guys were like you and left the police force this kind of crap wouldn`t happen. I moved away from Ohio partly because of the Police State there. I now live in Portland Oregon where cops can`t take a crap without civil rights groups jumping all over them. And guess what? We have ALMOST NO VIOLENT CRIME because we have a civil society here. I love it here; no cops, no crime, it is paradise. Cept for the rain..

I live nearby where that happened and my mom works at the hospital the guy went to. He was only hit 2 or so times but the officer shot more because he didn`t make contact with him in the beginning.

I agree with what the cops did because the guy was driving like a maniac. If the cops didn`t end it there then others could have been seriously hurt. If i was that cop i would`ve emptied my clip into the guy because i would`ve felt my life was in danger. If a police officer feels that his life or any other persons life is in danger than they are allowed to do whatever they deem necessary to end the conflict with as little casualties as possible(if they are needed).

If you read the report you`d have known that this guy had a criminal background, even without the police officers knowing this they were still right in what they did because they were making sure that no one else got hurt. And the passenger wasn`t hurt at all so we have to give the cop props for having good aim.

I was a cop for ten years. The responses here are the reason I left. A handful here understand, the rest are clueless. I`m not going to make assumptions about why. I wasn`t there. I will say that every state and jurisdiction has slightly different policies regarding this, so don`t say the cops were wrong based on your local policies. I was trained with a "use of force paradigm" which starts at the lowest level of mere presence, and escalates to deadly force. Keep in mind that you don`t have to start at the bottom, a situation can immediately require deadly force. I was taught that my sidearm was considered deadly force, and always trained to shoot "center mass" (vital organs) to eliminate the threat. Someone driving a two-ton "missile" can inflict more harm to society in a less amount of time than a gun firing pedestrian. We have eternity to criticize these officers from our computers when they had seconds to decide.

Erm...ouch.

Cops in the US are only supposed to disarm unless they are threatend with some kind of firearm or weapon. THEN they shoot to kill. Those cops were doing the right thing, well cept mabey the guy on the windsheild. That was kinda over-kill but mabey the windshield was super thick or sumthin. If that guy in the car didn`t have a gun then the cops should have just done some warning shots and gotten that guy outta the car, ship him off to jail, and gotten the bastard outta here. Pretty sweet action though.

Maybe if the bad guy took a quick timeout while the cops figure out the best way to end the situation so he (the bad guy) doesn`t get hurt, it would have ended and they all have a goup hug afterwards. Bottom line, the bad guy got what he deserved and the cops did what they had to do.

Now for the officer in this video on the hood of the car shooting. How in gods name do you think he got on the hood? He wasn`t pulling a Jackie Chan move to look good, the guy tried to hit him with the car and he didn`t have a lot of choice!

Get over yourselves for Christs sake! You might hate cops now, but the second one saves your ass you will love them!

Wow, it is amazing to see how many people chime in on a situation like this and think they know what they are talking about.

A couple of things that should be cleared up.

1) The person who said police chases should be illegal: You my friend are an idiot. If people knew police would not chase, they would never stop in the first place, so what would be the point of traffic officers?

2) A vehicle IS a lethal weapon and justifies lethal force the moment some one tries to use it to injure others, like this idiot in the video.

3) Police Officers are not trained or advised in any way to "shoot to disable the vehicle". This isn`t Hollywood kiddies! If an office pulls out their gun it is to shoot to kill! Thus bringing me to my other point.

4) Police are trained to shoot to kill, 3 shots center mass, if more if required. Again this isn`t Hollywood where they try and shoot the bad guy in the knee from 200 yards away to "bring him in". If a cop pulls his/her firearm

normaly Id be against that but if the driver is stupid enough to try moving the car with a cop on his hood Id say the cops life was at risk and deadly force would be acceptable

Soooo... you have a car that is driving recklessly. Then he runs from you and puts innocent people in danger. Right?

Let`s look at the options... Let him go. How long will he continue to drive like a maniac before he realizes he`s not being chased? Is he drunk? Is he going to drive down the road until he crashes and kills someone else?

Option 2 is, you attempt to stop him. Because of HIS actions, deadly force is used and a felon is no more.

You can`t blame one person for another`s actions. Go back... if he didn`t steal the car, no problems. If he wasn`t driving recklessly, no problem. If he didn`t run from the police, no problem. If he didn`t attempt to run the police over, no problem. But it`s the cop`s fault? Give me a break.

These officers chose to escalate a bad situation to the point that the use of deadly force was the only option left. So to those of you who say the cops had no choice but to act in self defense and shoot this man dead in the end-- you`re right. But you`re also giving the cops the benefit of the doubt by assuming that the situation had to get to that point. I will make no such assumption, nor will I give the cops a free pass. The truth is they could have called off the chase earlier when it became clear that the chase would lead to loss of human life (either an innocent bystander`s, an officer`s, or the perp`s). They chose not to and instead employ the typically brutal police-state tactics that have become the norm is this country. In the end a man is dead, a couple of cruisers are smashed up, and a bunch of cops around the country get to have their hard-ons by watching what is basically a snuff film.

Radic? Are you kidding? Did you see HOW he got on the hood? He was almost ran over by the car! His choices were 1.) Get hit by the car, or 2.) Jump. Once he jumped, and the car kept going, now he has 2 more choices... 1.) Jump from the hood of a moving car, or 2.) End it, since the guy has already tried to run him, as well as other officer over.

"I`ll bet this ruffian will think twice before he decides to run from the law again."

Naw, the last thing that went through his mind was a bullet.

Cops were perfectly justified in shooting this guy. He already tried to run over an officer. Shooting out his tires would not have stopped him. The car was a lethal weapon being used against the cops.

Male 2,703
it was justified, the suspect tried to ram the cop once. my beef is that the cop CLEARLY had a chance to immobolize the car about 2-3 minutes into the chase, but you can see him stop and let the guy get around him (when he did the 3/4 turn). THEN he said hes goign to take him out if he can, shouldve done it earlier.

also, the cop was calling over the radio "he`s stopped, he`s stopped" and the other cop STILL rammed him, a little excessive...

and a weapon IS a weapon, but apparently not as dangerous as a gun...the order of manslaughter charges go, Manslaughter, attempted manslaughter (both are melee weapons), vehicular manslaughter, and then accidental vehicular manslaughter (when you are driving drunk and kill someone). the last one doesnt even require jail time, you can get off with 2-5 years probation....its sick this country!

Male 136
disgusting. yes a car can potentially be used as a weapon, however, the cop was not in any danger of being killed by a long shot, it would have taken hopping off the hood. to think that’s an excuse to shoot someone 6 times for the easy way of ending it, rather than capturing the criminal. this terrible shame, it is exactly an example of someone being allowed to kill someone by abusing the laws. Unless you are in danger, you have no right to take a life.

hyacynth: No, police are trained to shoot at the center mass no fewer than twice. The first shot doesn`t always register with the assailant, and so a second shot is almost always necessary. Progression of force in most areas is a 5 level system. Because the kid in the car tried to ram the first officer from the get go, this was a level 4 from the start. Even if the kid didn`t have a weapon, the officer`s life was in danger. The kid tried to hit him with his car, he was clearly on top of a moving vehicle, and lethal force was more than likely acceptable at his department.

Beyond that, this is a training video. I doubt they would show that if it weren`t necessary.

I found the story (by clicking on the video) a little unsatisfying. Who was this Bennett guy really, besides an impulsive auto thief who apparently picked up a hitchhiker and scared the daylights out of him? I`d have liked more info. on his background, such as what kind of prior criminal record he had.

I am new here. So far so good - thanks for the anti-boredom.

Okay, now the guy is dead. He was stupid and probably drunk. Oh well. Cept he would still be alive if those cops hadn`t shot him. No need for it IMHO. Just remember if you steal a car, there are worse things than getting caught.

Cops like that should be fired at the least and thrown in jail if justice had any sway in Ohio.. Which is doesn`t, I used to live there so I know.

Booya. Go Ohio! Maybe they were quick to pull a trigger, but the guy was on the hood and the car was still moving. Two rams and this car refused to stop, and a cop is on the hood and it still moves. If anyone else were the officer, I somehow doubt they would have reacted any differently

Kikyo... I`m sure you realize that your college is not training you to be a police officer. Also, if your law enforcement family is telling you that they are trained to "shoot to disarm", I would strongly encourage them to find another career. That is a red flag that the "officer", when faced with a deadly force situation, will not make the right decision. The spit second decision making that is needed in a situation like this is not bogged down by "disarm/kill" debate is one`s mind. It`s hard enough to make a decision to fire a weapon at another human, but then to add to that..."do I shoot to disarm or kill" is crazy.

Bottom line, police are trained to shoot until the threat is over. They are trained that, if they are pointing their gun at someone, they are prepared to kill that person. They are also trained to keep shooting until the threat is gone. So, for this situation, if the car is still moving, there is still a threat.

It`s shoot to kill. Period! There is no other reason to fire a gun at a suspect. If you want to disarm, use a tazer. Unfortunately, tazers don`t shoot through windshields.

Oh, and I guess police in Europe NEVER chase a fleeing suspect. That`s right all those videos on the net are faked. Got it.

The cop was standing on the friggin hood of the car shooting at him. That takes some serious skills. If you`re standing on the hood of a moving car and you had a gun, what`s the most logical way to stop the car and not die?
Standing on the good of a car while it`s accelerating can easily equal death. The car was a weapon. The cop disarmed him of his weapon.

MechBFP you are an idiot. They are instructed to shoot to disarm. I happen to be majoring in criminal justice and come from a law enforcement family. Maybe you should keep your mouth closed when you don`t know what you are talking about.

In regards to the video, the officer was justified with his actions. The suspect tried to run over the officer (aggrivated assault, attempted murder). Cars are considered weapons. He didn`t have to pull a gun on the cops to have that happen, just the fact that he tried to run the officer over was enough. If the suspect died, it was justifiable homicide.
