Skills like catching? Throwing? Kicking? Tackling? There is not enough difference between rugby and american football that you can talk about skills coming in from either direction being needed or unlearnable in a month.

I found it pretty straightforward to learn A.F. coming from Rugby, and at 55Kg and 5`8" I could still bring down the A.Footballers with a Rugby tackle. ;)

please stfu there r hundreds of 250 pound guys who can run a 10.8 in the 100 meter
probably thousands
and i doubt the guy u were talkin about could have played football if he had been playing rugby
he wouldnt have the skills athleticism maybe but u have 2 have technique 2 play football(something you might not need 2 play rugby)

umm.. I`m not sure about the rest of you, but at my school we call that a "schoolyard bullsh.it" just their not usually that good(considering no one else has mentioned this, I`m guessing that we might have just made that up) anyway, they are annoying as hell for the other team

Lol whoever said that tackles in rugby come in at 5 mph are either blind or there mind cant calculate speeds! If they tackled that slow theyd never be brought to the floor. I feel american footballers are poo scared they might mess there faces up. Look at all the rugby players with flat noses and coliflour ears, no thats a real sport! Get stuck in , get muddy and get hurt!"----- qoute from ignorant european.

"Football player are afraid they may get their faces messed up" excuse me, have you even taken a look at how many people in football have died due to spinal cord injuries or having your skull decompressed (doesn`t sound fun does it?) tons of football players either get permanantly paralyized or die during this sport even with helmets and pads, just a little fun fact, in my freshman yes FRESHMAN division alone this year we had 4 cases of broken limbs, 1 case of someone going un-consious, and tons of cramps, so please ed

look, i love football and i dont have nything against rugby, but wen people say rugby is tougher than football, thats just plain ignorance. i think in rugby u need a lot more stamina than in football (cuz football players stop every 2 sec.) but wen u r playing, u use all of ur strength just 2 get a yard in or 2. i played my eighth grade year and even in junior high i almost passed out in our last game. o and 4 all the english people out there, i gotta apologize about the NFL game played there. miami is the worst team in the league and the giants arent that good either. that game was prolly the worst of the week. only 2 touchdowns! so sry.

and about the name "football" i think soccer should b the only "football" out there cuz we hardly use the foot and kicking a game winning field goal is a cheap way 2 win but wen americas biggest sport 4 about half a century is called that, its kinda hard 2 change the name just like that.

BroadwayLove -- its cause the extremists on both sides have the loudest voices, even though they are not the majority. Theyre the ones who escalate this CRA#P. There are millions of ppl, American, European, Asian, Australian, African, who respect BOTH football and American football as legitimate sports.

You all who believe one sport is better than the other or that either is illegitimate because of origin (all modern sports came from somewhere, bastardization matters not, everything now is a bastardization with all the rule changes and officialization), you all can keep to your endless bickering.

The rest of us who are not as extreme, close-minded, stubborn, whatever, and who can respect the sports of our different cultures, we will spend our time doing more worthwhile things, like appreciating whichever football we damn well wish to.

I`m born and raised in NYC, USA, but my gf and I like and follow both footballs. Extremism, that gets out of hand, brings the wise nowhere.

By the way, I looked up Jonah Lomu and watched some videos and stuff. He is clearly an amazing athlete, and I don`t think anybody is arguing that there are fantastic athletes in both sports. If anybody does, they`re clearly idiots. I`ll be honest though- the defense looked absolutely terrible in those videos. The tackling seemed like a joke... A 250 pound man who can run the 100 in 10.8 is pretty remarkable, but I`d be hard-pressed to find a player in the NFL who runs a 40 in under 4.7 (including 320-350 pound linemen), with the fastest players running in the 4.25-4.30 range. To sum it up: both sports have incredible athletes, and both are entirely different. It just kills me when people badmouth a sport that they simply know nothing about.

As for the whole "football should be played with your feet" discussion, kicking determines just about the most important aspect in football- field position. Kickoffs and punts are a huge part of the game, and these both require the (GASP!) foot. Also, field goals (ALSO REQUIRING THE FOOT!) account for more scoring than touchdowns, so anybody who says that "football" is an unfit name for the sport really doesn`t have a firm grasp of what they`re talking about.

Pfft. "I bet you never see injuries like..."
I played both. I spent 6 months in Physiotherapy because of Rugby, not American football.
Our American football team didn`t have any padding.

More pfft. "459 pound players smashing into each other"
Heaviest player ever weighed in at 375-410 pounds (Aaron Gibson), where the hell you found 2 50-75 pound heavier to smash into each other I`ll never know.

Even more pfft: Look up Jonah Lomu. 250 pounds but more importantly (after all not ever 700 pound bag of lard is an "athlete") can run the 100 meter dash in 10.8 seconds. Oh, and as a bonus, turned down an American football contract to keep playing Rugby. ;)

Not to mention American Football *is* a bastardization of Rugby. Specifically "Rugby Football" brought over by colonists.

I watched rugby once, expecting something along the lines of 459 pound people smashing each other skulls in with bats at turbocharge speed and no refrees because of what you Europeans say. I almost laughed. The tackles came at 5 miles an hour and it was ridiculously slow paced. Rugby is football for old men. Also the "football should be played with feet you stoopid amrcans loal" thing...Why isn`t rugby played using rugs? foot in football doesn`t mean poo, rug in ruby doesnt mean poo.

Im surprised at the amount of people on IAB that don`t know basic football rules (even Americans and Canadians) First of all the ability of being able to play until the end of the play even when the clock hits zero adds huge element of strategy to the game with how to call the plays, use your timeouts whether to spike the ball ect. Also all the rugby players saying wearing pads is for pussies football players are a helluva lot bigger than rugby players and football players, especially recievers are often in very vulnerably positions during the play due to the nature of the game. All you rugby players try taking a hit from Brian Urlacher running at full speed while fully extended in the air to make a spectacular leaping catch (another thing rugby doesnt have). Football is a hell of a lot more exciting to watch and takes much more strategy to play. Rugby just gets into big piles in the middle of the field where they push each other for minutes.

Male 108
That must have sucked, it was near the end of the game and everybody is already worn out and the purple team is ready to end this game, but the "Tigers" Just did not give up, the reason that those laterals even worked was because the playes on the purple team just about gave up, after each lateral, less and less players made an effort to stop them.
In other words: PuRpL3 T34M G0T PwNed!! LoL!!!!1!!

and about how football is gay and not exciting
when you get together with a group of 50 other guys and throw all you can into a game you LOVE to play and the adrenaline is pumping and your throwing your body around, doing everything you can to help your team win and when you pull off a last second play like that(which in football is much harder than rugby because of the pads and the average speed of every1 and the lineman cant catch or run at all) makes this one of if not the most emotional games ever made and all the people who think its boring try playing it on a team or watch college football and pick one team to root for, when every game counts you will see how exciting this game really is now stop talking like you know that football is boring

Male 20
omg doesnt any1 know how to play football
it was the last play they were obviously behind by a touchdown or they wouldnt have done it
since the other team is takin away the long pass by sending every1 down field then u have to lateral
after the first throw the rest have to go backwards and if it hits the ground its a fumble which means any1 can get it
if they get tackled they lose the game and they do this over and over until they a)get tackled
b)lose the ball or c)score the touchdown and win the game
no this isnt how football is played its a desperation play that is almost impossible to have it work and is used as the final play in a game football is nothing like rugby yes u have pads but the people tackling you are bigger faster and stronger than the guys in rugby so obviously u need pads or you would literally die neither one is rough just in football u have to wear pads cause almost every1 is 6 feet tall and weighs 220 pounds average

It`s sad that most people think Rugby is more hardcore than American Football because of the pads. I`d say they are comparable, but Football has less injures. Football hits are about the power of a 30 mile per hour head on collision; that`s just on the line. The other hits in those videos posted were probably a lot stronger.

LOL, I played organized Rugby and they DO NOT hit like they do in football. There are some hard ones every now and then, but the NFL/College football have hits and impacts every game and nearly every play that are more powerful than 90% of what you would see/play in a good Rugby match.

Yes Mani-Jac. If a play is in motion when the game clock expires, the game doesn`t end until the play is over.

And Rugby and American Football (for non-Americans) DO have their similarities but they have their differences too. American football uses systems of complex formations and timing routes which set up for big collisions making pads and helmets a necessity. Watch this to get a better idea. Sorry about the music. I just don`t think a lot of people outside of America have really had the opportunity to experience what American football is all about.
It`s a shame if you ask me because it really is great.
