OLD. fake. camel spiders only grow to be 6 inches; they`re named camel spiders not because of their size but because they live in the desert.

ok, it is not photoshopped. and it is 1 of them. I learned about them in my human evolution class. They are called camel spiders but they are really part of the scorpion family.

this is no spider as many people know. It`s very obvious, too, as they have 10 legs. But they do actually grow much bigger than that, and are almost harmless to humans, but can bite. They creep me out.

It is a spider, no they aren`t that big but their venom has novacaine in it. They don`t necisarily eat your leg off, they just eat the flesh i`ve seen some disturbing pictures.

Yes, for those of you ranting, it is two.

They`re nasty little things, if you aggravate them, but all they want is shade, which is why they `chase` soldiers.

Sorry, hottiechika5, but someone lied to you. Solifugae aren`t venomous. They will bite if you, say, thrash around a lot if one happens to climb on you, but they don`t/can`t inject poison (or an anesthetic) into you. Mind you, the bite can easily become infected (very infected).

First of all, they aren`t really spiders. They`re a type of scorpion. The picture has been altered and stretched so that the two spiders, even separate, still look much larger than they are. Yes, they are poisonous. My brother, while serving a year long term in Iraq, had a friend who was sleeping and woke to to find half his foot gone with a camel spider hanging off of it. When they bite they inject a poison which immediately numbs you and continue to prey on your flesh. They got their name because they jump on the bellies of camels in the desert and live off them. However, it is true that they are large and extremely fast, with the ability to leap aw well. You can buy them dead encased in glass as souvenirs in Iraq, but they will confiscate them when you get into the US again.

I saw one of these when I was in Iraq. It was in our work building which had brown, marbled floors. I got a couple of pictures of it, but it was camouflaged against the floors, so it was hard to make out. It pretty much just stood there the whole time I was walking around it. Then, some asshat went over and stepped on it. I hate people sometimes.

"i swear i saw this in 2001"

Sadly, this picture was taken by soldiers in Iraq, meaning it was 2003 or later... nice job.

ny1, even though it uses photo illusions, i`d still not like those arachnids in my tent. yes, i know they`re not spiders, but they`re still technically part of the arachnid family.

I grew up in Saudi Arabia and Camel Spiders can get larger than your hand. They run faster than you can, they can jump several feet in the air, and they are pretty aggressive. I knew a woman who went to sleep not knowing there was a CS under her pillow. During the night it bit her arm and her arm was numb for a few days. The bite mark was awful. You would not want to get bitten by one of these.

And as squinge69 said we get way bigger spiders in Aus, the ghost gum tree out the front tends to produce the ocasional monster hunsman that decides to crawl in the house away from the heat.

how can u say they can grow to dinner plate size when arachnid EXPERTS say they cant? also no way can they run faster than a man. http://dml.cmnh.org/2004Sep/msg00087.htm...
according to snopes they can run 10 miles an hour and anyone should be able to run that fast. no way can they run faster than a man - donovan bailey hit 27.4mph and if u go on that link a long jumper reportedly hit 45km/h and it is also said that bob hayes hit 30mph.

My cousin is a marine and he was in Iraq, and he said that he did encounter these. Bothered him...he doesn`t like spiders. He said they were a lot bigger and faster than spiders here, and that they jumped.

As much as I like Snopes, I have first-hand experience with these critters.

I had one in my bed. They run EXTREMELY fast, much faster than a man. They CAN jump, and they eat pretty much anything the can grab. This includes birds, lizards, mice, fingers, etc.

They can easily grow to dinner-plate size. They are also very hard to kill, being immune to most poisons, too strong for sticky traps, and too fast for a boot.

These are the facts :

-There are 2 of them
-They resemble spiders, but are technically not
-They dont eat flesh (for those of you who went to snopes but didnt read all the way down)
-They do look creepy as hell, but are relatively harmless to humans as long as we leave them alone

ONE OF THE STUPIDEST, OLDEST E-MAIL/INTERNET SPAMS/LIES IN THE WORLD. lol

It`s not a spider, and they`re only about 4-6 inches I beleive on average. They won`t hurt a person either. Like someone said before, the worst they do is try to stay in your shadow or find a dark place to stay out of the sun.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yes it`s two of them... it`s a solifuge and they are known to have some of the most powerful jaws in the arthropod world. It is an arachnid (like spiders and scorpions) and yes they do get that big :) - they`re quite rare too - you don`t see them for sale often in the UK - and we only get the smaller american varieties :(
