If your life sucks, it"s only because a computer programmer hates you.

so that`s this make video game characters "real"?
if so it must suck to be a random pedestrian in GTA...

Breaking bones, or being sore, or anything limiting mobility is lag.

Old people are always lagging.

MarvinTheDog, that is a conclusion based on 2 critical assumptions. That A)Other Souls, or "data" for all intended purposes, *weren`t* designed for other forms of life (I.e Plantlife), because there is a near infinite chance that *some* humans are born. Once this happens its an infinite chance that *some* other humans exist during this time. Also, this is assuming that THIS is the most interesting period of time. This would vary from user to user. Its an interesting theory but I wouldn`t take it for the gospel truth

If we live in a computer simulation then where`s the lag?

Maybe it`s when we`re sick and so our systems cant do anything? that`s just my guess

I thought about this when I was playing Kingdom Hearts 2 and learnt Roxas was in a simulation of Twilight Town.
Then I thought we might all be in one individual game. We only exist, the rest of the people might just be NPCs or something.
So I could be talking to people who aren`t real, and I could be real...and there are thousands of other people playing their own game right now.
Those other games could be like the other dimensions or something.

This is actually quite fun to think about. ^_^

I am not saying that dinosaurs were not interesting. The biological evolution is far more advanced than our technological evolution. And we humans are as much animals as any other species. The exception is that over a nanosecond (I am speaking in proportions here)in earths history our species came to be and during this nanosecond our species will affect whether all life on earth will be wiped out or if it will spread to other planets. If you were an alien who wanted to study what has been going on on earth i think you whould find that this time period in earth:s history would be one of the most interesting timeperiods to study (and maybe to simulate). Wouldn`t you think?

Agreed.

I think it will eventually be possible using a mixture of organic and nano (or quantum) computing. Cybernetics.

Heh - also think about this. You could have plugged yourself in to a computer and created a reality for yourself. Very much like a game. It`s not a new concept but fantastic all the same.

Dinosaurs were fantastic too and others. I think the evolution of all life from the begining is very interesting as it shows how species have adapted over the eons. Who knows, there may be another species one day (if the human race is gone) that does something different but equally as bizzare.

I heard of this theory before ages ago. The idea of simulated realities is nothing new, and nothing to lose sleep over. What people tend to forget when reading this sort of thing is: who created the actually reality of the person simulating our reality? Are they in a simulation too? Is someone else creating their reality? You`ll note the whole theory breaks down after that. Another thing to point out is that for you, now this is reality whether simulated or not. It is interesting stuff though - im fascinated by this sort of thing.

What you guys have to realize is that just because we cannot comprehend a computer powerful enough to simulate our universe, it does not mean that it is impossible to create one. Do you think people during medieval times could comprehend modern day technology?

Also, free will is not at all out of the realm out of being programmed by a computer. Just because we perceive what we do to be free will, it does not mean that it actually is. How can you be sure that every thought you have wasn`t planned out for you? If that is true, even if you were to purposely perform an action opposite to what you would normally do in order to go against your programmed will, it would still be part of your program to perform this opposite action.

Open your mind a little and think outside the box.

This certainly is not disprovable.

Well, Liquidglass, think about this. In order to properly simulate the world we live in, it would require an extremely, if not impossibly advanced computer program. Think about how much it would have to simulate.
Matter, down to electrons, quarks, gluons, etc., and up to galaxy clusters. Think of how complex that is. Simulating every single electron in the universe, or even on a planet.
The thought process of every animal on earth and possibly on other planets (That is, if there are aliens. Can`t say for sure).
Physics, such as the forces of nature and the principles of motion.
Weather.
Time, and how it fluctuates and affects everything differently, as well as how our physical bodies grow and age.
Said program would have to interpret all of these without a flaw all the time for it to be a success.
And anyways, mr_stache already disproved this theory with that famous quote:
"I think, therefore I am."
If we were simply a simulation, we would have no c

Impossible. The computer would have to be able to simulate the state of every particle in the universe... and the MOST efficiant way of doing this would require every particle in the universe. Simply put, it`d be easier to recreate the universe itself than to program a new one.

are you sure about that Mjustin? I think you`re thinking on too large of a scale. You`re putting it like someone is managing us as we are. But what if we`re just a hard drive/supercomputer worth of data, then why couldn`t you simulate the forces of nature without any problem? Oh wait, you can. Plus if it`s so advanced a type of AI would be developed that would allow us to think for ourselves given a basic set of beliefs (ie: religious beliefs, morals, laws)

YinYang78: for the monkey to appear, the programmer would first have to be paying attention to your short sentence in the code.

CaptainPat: see you assume we are real simply based on your observations, what proof do you have?

What I find interesting is the way we think of "God" has been evolving. Long ago, people believed in natural spirits and gods of each plant/animal/emotion. That`s what they knew. It then progressed and now that we`re technologically advanced the belief that a computer simulation is running our lives is becoming popular. MEEP MOP MOOP! I am a regulator then. BEEEEP.

For all of you that think someone or something is controlling us every second of every day. They don`t have to, all the "programer" has to do is put an A.I. system into the simulation, that would be our free will. You guys are thinking of this as the Sims, I think this is more of a "If I give them uranium, what will happen?" kind of simulation, not a "I will build a laboratory and make a nuclear bomb inside it, then blow up the world I just created". You are thinking on a very small scale here, you need to EXPAND YOU MINDS alittle bit.

(I think the computer runs on Linux, Ubuntu distro)

This isnt a new theroy. When i was like 4 or 5 years old i used to think we were like all part of a big story book some "big people" were reading and they could change the "story" and stuff. and the times when i was sleeping was the times when they weren`t doing anything to my "story" So i though of the idea none of us are real way before this guy.
And i was little then. Now i think this idea is just stupid. Of course we`re real. Why do you think we all have free will? If we were being controlled we wouldn`t and The "controllers" personality would show in us all.

so yeah, this theory has been around for a while, with countless books and movies written about it. It`s really no different then the theory that our existance is all in someone`s imagination. The thing is there`s really no way to disprove it (or prove it for that matter).

If you think it`s not possible because it would require a processor the size of the sun, then you`re missing one key thing here - our universe is just a product of someone elses imagination. THere`s no way to say that the "designer`s" universal laws of physics would work the same way as ours... maybe it would be incredibly easy for them to create a processor that powerful. In fact, wouldn`t it be safe to say that they would construct our universe in such a way that it would be impossible for us to create a virtual sim as complex as our own?

So, maybe it`s true, maybe it`s not... no one can say for sure. (personally i think it`s kind of silly and just a product of our times)

to whoever said that this kind of processor would take up to much space: for us now to think of something like this now, yeah, it seems crazy and unbeleivable. but if you go back 30 years, to the time when a nomral pc was the size of a large room, and tell them that in 30 years you could have a computer 100x as powerful as that and it could fit in your lap, they`d have you commited for insanity.

im not saying taking sides here saying yes its true or no it cant be, but im just saying that i think its very possible, that there could be some extremely advanced civilization with this kind of technology.

and someone said that it doesnt explain how there can be no 2 people alike. simple, if someones gonna make a program this complex, they could just put 10000 possibilities for hair style, height, weight...etc. and then whenever a person is born randomly select their features, and then just make them similar to their parents but with slight difference.

To Sabre200000 and Mjustin: It actually is possible for us just to be a simulation, just think, 20 years ago we thought it would be impossible to create simulation games (like the Sims and Simcity) and if it was possible to make them it would take a processor the size of the sun just to run them. Now, don`t you think that sometime in our future a computer would be able to simulate our universe? Just think in ~10-20 years the computer will pass up the human brain in terms of processing power and "space".

Just something to think about.

I`ve thought about this one before years ago. At the end of the day even if we are a video game or simulation. . . . .there has to be a physical world somewhere. So this man ruling out a physical world or god by saying we`re a simulation is ridiculous all that means is you have to explain the physical form of this simulation.......

Speaking of the human race as a whole, the odds of someone being born during this time is more like 99.99%. The odds of someone being born and living at the time of the first humans is much, much lower because there were so few humans in the beginning. At this point in time it would take an apocalypse of some sort to prevent humans from reproducing simply because of our large population.

Also, there are infinite possiblities and theories of how our world actually originated. The likelihood that either one of the situations you presented is true is much much lower than you`ve stated because it isn`t an "either, or" scenario. It`s more of an "either, or, or, or, or, or, etc,..." scenario.

surely something like this could only occur if our universe was actually not on as larger scale as we think, and was actually relatively small, contained within another, larger universe, where life-forms have recreated the big bang- just to see what it was like.

that would be cool. but this theory is far too based on probablities, i think that in itself is a flaw

Male 335
Sabre200000 hit the nail right on the head. There are way too many flaws in the theory for it to be valid. Despite what people may think, it is impossible for humans or post humans to create a computer simulation as complex as our world actually is. I estimate that to do so would require a processor larger than our sun. Think about it, and you`ll realize how complex our world actually is. In any normal sim game, you are managing something which takes less processing power than it would take to simulate the thought process of an actual house cat. Just think how much processing power it would take to manage 6 billion humans alone. That`s without every other living thing, not to mention the forces of nature (gravity, electromagnetic, etc.) and everything that goes on outside of our planet. It simply can`t be done because it`s on too large a scale. If you were to manage, say, one person in a single gray house with no windows, that would be possible (albeit improbable). But not a universe.

I like that last line marchhare. Anyway, computer code is darn near perfect, unless a virus is introduced or something. There are way too many handicapped, deformed, mute, deaf, etc..people and animals in the world to JUST be a computer program. The code would also not have an INFINATE amount of possibilities when each human is born. NO TWO people are alike..even down to the microscopic level there are differences. A "simulation" or computer code has to have some executions that are repeated when running artificial AI and simulations, which would negate us all being unique. Sorry, but it`s a cool and very interesting idea, but it has major flaws.

@MarvinTheDog: Interesting, but don`t you agree that someone`s got to live in that super most interesting time? And if someone`s got to live in that time, why not us? And by the way, if technology really does grow exponentially (which is debatable) then we do nót live in the most interesting time. In fact, the world would keep getting more and more interesting.

But back on topic: I don`t think it is possible, because if we were really able to build such an omnipotent computer, it would still not be big enough to contain itself. So if at some time in the future we would be able to build it, we can`t be in it right now. And if there was some outer race that have build a computer in which we live, why does our technology keep growing so fast that we get near to their technology?

I don`t know it just sound a bit far fetched to me.

In the future There could be an infinite amount of these simulations. This would mean that there would be billions and zillions of simulated humans living in a simulated version of the most interesting time and place in eart`s history. This would even out the odds of you being born in the most interesting time and place in the whole of earth`s history because your life is most likely one of these simulations.

Out of all the animals that live or have lived on earth, what were the chances that you were gonna be born as a human and not as let`s say a mouse during the dinosour-age? Those chances were like one to a billion. What where the chances that you as a human happen to live during the most interesting and important time during the whole history of mankind. Very small. Is it just a coinsident that you happen to have the most interesting life out of billions and zillions of others. I don`t think so.

There have been life on earth for several billion years. Humans have only existed during a fraction of this time. During the time that humans have existed our technological advancements have increased exponentialy. If you know what an expontial curve is, than you know that there is a point where that curve doesn`t seem to continue forward but instead goes straight up. During the timeline of mankinds existance right now is the time we have reached that point. You and I are living during the time in history where this curve which illustrates our technological advancements just seems to go straight up. This means that right now is probably the most interesting and important time in the whole of earth`s history. The most interesting specie that have ever lived on earth is the human race.

As a Christian, I believe this world really is a computer program of sorts. In the Bible, it is God`s word, what He says, that makes things happen. What does a computer programmer do? He "says" things and they happen, albeit in a much smaller system than the entire universe.

The fall of man can be seen as a rival programmer trying to sabotage the master programmer`s creation with a virus (sin). God has been slowly rewriting the program ever since.

Every miracle you hear of such as the deaf hearing, the blind seeing, the lame walking (whether you believe it`s true or not) is really the programmer rewriting the code to what it is supposed to be.

I know a guy who never learned how to read. He had dyslexia so bad that nothing made sense. He went to a conference and God told him that the letters would make sense. So he runs to the back table and picks up the first book he sees and he starts reading for the first time in his life.
