Maybe it ended-up in this form because that particular geometric arrangement actually forms a very efficient pattern. BY LOOKING AT THIS PATTERN AND SEEING IT ONLY THROUGH THE LENSES OF A WWII HISTORIAN OR HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR, and effectively giving the Nazi`s a monopoly on any particular meaning that might be BEHIND this pattern, you are in fact giving their legacy more power and allowing it to occupy an entire mathematical formula, much less space in your brain and culture. Stop giving them the monopoly on this pattern; appreciate it for what it is, as well as what it has come to symbolize in various parts of the world. Otherwise, you are a prisoner of your own `compassion.`

but seriously, they arn`t really going to spend money on moronic stuff like that are they?

i mean, not when they could be saving third world children and investing in research to stop deadly diseases?

oh dear.

P.S. Allthough not originally a Nazi symbol unfortunatley it is little else now. it is all very well and good saying actually it is from this culture and that culture, but guess what anybody that looks at a swastika thinks Nazi, if you say otherwise sadly you are a liar.

Just to say i think that changing it or not doesn`t really matter, $600,000 isn`t exactley the biggest sum of money to be wasting. i mean i`m pretty sure there is artwork in hospitals in this country that cost that sort of money, which is pretty damn stupid. but still the point is money needs to be wasted its the economy the money really wouldn`t have gone to anything like curing AIDs or housing the homeless.

Also everyone who is saying the war is over get over it and its not your holocaust, well we shouldnt actively be incouraging the downplay of such an historic event really should we? i mean we happen to all know quite alot about WW2 because it is such recent history that, we know so much about and it changed the world as much as it did. If in 50 years there arent that many people who know of the nazi`s and swastikas as they are learning about conflicts in the middle east in their history rooms then i think that will be rather sad.

Pretty stupid waste of taxpayers dollars. I don`t think any reasonable person would make a complaint to begin with, but what can ya do?

^ I think no one cared when it was built...

I`m going to pretend no one cares now. I`m also gonna assume that the money vaporized.

The swastika has been used in religions and cultures ranging from Hinduism to Native American tribes to ancient Greece. The Germanic cultures took to the symbol when there was this surge in trying to connect ancient Europe to the "Aryans". Thus, after finding the symbol on several ancient, Indo-Iranian artifacts, the symbol became popular and seen as a kind of good-luck charm.

Then the Nazi party took the Aryan thing, perverted it, and, thanks to their craziness, the swastika stigma was born in the minds of Western culture.

It`s a military building. I`m in the army, and I can tell ya, a swastika shaped building is the least of the oddities in equipment appearance. "That which is stupid and works, isn`t stupid". It`s a funny `hah hah, they didn`t realize it`, but that`s all. Seeing as it`s a military facility (and judging by the parking lots and lawns, clearly not a training facility), and $600,000 is now going to be spent changing something that only 3 types of creatures knew about. 1. Space aliens. 2. Bored nerds on google. 3. Dumbasses who want to be offended and actively seek out things that they can claim to be offended by (Actual offense not required.). I swear, some people`s logic is along the lines of "Well there`s a wet floor, so I`m going to sue for falling and hurting myself on it. I didn`t actually fall and hurt myself, but I can claim I could have, so there`s no real difference.

Building + Army = Functional.
Internet + Dumbasses = $600,000 down the drain

I don`t think it was built to offend some one, and if it was, who really cares? We shouldn`t make changes to every little thing just because it offends some one.

This reminds me of that conspiracy that Washington D.C. is laid out to look like a pentagram, a symbol of the devil. Basically, if your really looking for something hidden like that, you`ll find it eventually, no matter what shape it is.

Hmm, spend over half a million dollars to rebuild it? No need for that. Anyone looking down on it just has to turn their head 45 degrees one way or another...no more swastika! Problem solved. It goes back to being the ancient symbol that the nazi`s stole in the first place. People of the world: Believe me when I say that there are still some of us Americans with common sense.

Those people complaining are little pussys. If they want it changed, they should do it themselves. Pay $600,000 out of their own pocket. I bet none of them would be able to pay a cent, for it to get changed. Jeez, get over it, they`ll probably forget about it in a week anyway. I say don`t change it, unless the complainers are willing to PAY for it.

Thats right happyshopper, I`m talking to you. You don`t even live in America, so I don`t know why you decided to join in on this debate. Would you be willing to pay for that? Huh? Do ya?

Spend the money on cancer research, NASA, AIDS, starving children in Africa. A LOT more people need this money than you need this building changed, just so you could feel good about a Holocaust, that never happened to you.

why do you lot really care about that money being spent on this. you dont even now where it came from, i mean if it was from the naval budget anyway then do you really think it was goin on hospitals or housing or anything other then the means to kill people i mean maybe not but still its not known that this money is coming from a positive source

Hahaha, nice. Not a big deal though, they don`t need to waste money on that. I doubt anyone thinks that the US Navy is full of Nazis. Plus, swastikas aren`t exclusively Nazi-related anyway. The swastika was just adopted by the Nazis, it had been around for about a couple thousand years by the time they decided to use it.

i dont know what A/C is, but bull crap. It was clearly designed by some surviving nazi admirals that started operations again at this time in this place for the good of the riecht.

Hmmm as i type this im thinking how that could so be the case lol. i mean they brought in lots of the rocket scientists to work on the manhattan project etc. could have been some nazi architect helping the navy after the war and sniding it in, i mean come on i still don`t understand how the hell could anyone have missed that.

lol, not over sensitive really i just dont like people saying stupid ass comments like oh but its not really a nazi symbol, are you joking. i mean how many millions of people died at the hands of that symbol for people to dismiss that part of its history and say it is older therefore not really anything to do with nazi`s or whatever just ignorance being disguised as intelligence

ok smartarse, so you are saying to me you look at a nazi and think `oh my look at that buddhist symbol on his arm that means good fortune, luck and well being. ah what a wonderful world we live in` or perhaps looking at the picture this is all about are you telling me when you looked at that and didn`t think wow a nazi swastika you thought wow a buddhist indian originated symbol which means good things and was used by some others not that i care about them. please. people look at a swastika and think one thing and yes sadly the nazi party destroyed the shapes reputation much like the egyptians did to the pyramid i mean sure these things existed before but these days it does only mean nazi as sad as that may be thats the way it is, getting picky over history doesnt change the thoughts of the majority im afraid.

i dont think it is really a buddhist symbol really is it, i mean i think we all know the origins, bent crosses buddhist sculptings blah blah. NO. it is a swastika. it brings to mind the images of mass murder and hate, not very nice really is it. And only a fool would say about destroying buddhists, i mean some farmers actually use sycals and well i guess everyone uses hammers, wtf communists. BURN THEM!!

are you being serious, that is clearly a swastika, and sure it is arguabley a geometric shape of no importance but sadly a war that went on 20 years prior to that building made that shape a negative image that shouldn`t be displayed really. plus as has been said that must have shown up on the blue prints, the model before construction, the foundations or even someone with enough brain power to work out what it would look like from above.

firegragongt, if you think an army has a sole purpose as simple as training troops then damn what a poor army, allthough well trained they will have no buildings to occupy as the public will have destroyed them as hate filled images. R U Kidding, nicely said lol

This is stupid, it is four L shaped buildings in a pin wheel design built back in the 1960s. I am pretty certain there was no evil plot or design to create a swastika (which isn`t even a German symbol, it is a much older symbol that the Germans turned 45 degrees counterclockwise).

The only reason anyone even notices it is that technology has allowed us to see something that kinda looks like a swastika. If Google earth found a terrain feature that looked like the Virgin Mary you all would completely ignore it, but one hint that the US is being bad and here comes the "I can`t believe they did that bandwagon".

So now the Navy has to spend $600K to change something so some folks won`t be mad. A waste of money, a waste of resources, and a waste of time. Some folks need to learn what to consider important and what to let go.
