This jail is nicer than any hotel I"ve ever stayed in.

personally i recon that place is a bit too fancy for criminals, i mean they are serving a sentance for a reason, im not sayin they should live in a dark cell on bread and water, but come on, 5 star treatment for rapest, murders, all the worsest of the worsest when others are scraping by. thats not justice

See. this is where America goes wrong- we treat our criminals like less than rats- and yet we call their time in prison "reforming". There is no effort to truly reform our criminals. Treat them better, and really work for a change, give them bearable living conditions, treat them with respect, and HUMANELY (being in a "hole" for days on end is NOT humane) and perhaps one day the criminals will mirror that respect and kindness.

Sure, some will always be "bad" but many, if given the chance, would and COULD change.

Dear timmy I was born in LEOBEN, for Austrian standards Leoben is a town, usa would probably think it more of a mall.

here`s a link to another article about this prison, it has a bit more information about the why of this place, and includes the same pictures, it would appear that the full fronted glass scheme is really the prison, i myself thought when i saw the emoticons that it was an I.T. building of some sort, but no, it really is a prison!

neely 2009 it does . juristricion center is a nice word for prison, like juvenil correction center, and yes lots of Austrian woman come out of prison cant cope with the real world and due petty crimes just so they can go back in ... and yes and as a person living in Austria , i am annoyed that my taxes are spent on this.

I`ve been on a tour trough to whole building.
The glass part is the courthouse where they are detained for a small period of time when they are trailed. Then they are brought to get concrete prison behind it where they serve there sentence. I personaly like to patch of grass on the roof where you can look at the mountainview.

They made it glass because I doubt any of the prisoners want to escape. That prison is nicer than most of the house in my area. WTF!?

I don`t think this is a prison. Based on my loose knowledge of Dutch and German, "Justizzentrum" translates into Justice Centre. I`m not sure about the leobon part, it might be the city or state.

I`d still like to go and stay a few nights there though.

it is if you make it so that the prisoners don`t want to leave! although that kinda defeats the purpose...

According to babelfish, the sign on the front says its a national court, public prosecutor`s office, district court, as well as a judicial center(which I`m assuming means prison).

Just in case anyone was wondering.

marvinius:
Of course he was being sarcastic. He simply gave what I thought to be the best explanation to a rather unexplainable set of circumstances. It also made good social commentary, in my humble opinion.
I asked him again about it today and all he said was "Sei Ruhig und iss deine Wurst."
Go figure.

austria is a popular domicle and vantage point for high ranked organized crime partition, especially from eastern europe. In other words if u have enough cash, and connections you can transfer into this prison, but then again, you have these sorts of prisons for the rich anywhere in the world. (smaller offences of course). Oh, and btw, im austrian

I think a lot of you are missing the point. The punishment isn`t living in a crappy hole and being treated like a dog, the punishment is loss of freedom and being separated from society. It`s wrong to treat a man who robbed a store like a dog. Put them away and take away their right to be free. Then, give them an education and help them get on the right track.

There is a reason that recidivism is so high in American prisons...

Hotels dont get stars, and if this prison is nicer than hotels you`ve been in, you`ve been in crap hotels. Everything is laid out normally just brighter, more glass and white etc, nothing overly different, just more modern

The possibility of going to jail has never deterred me from committing a crime, I`ve never committed a crime because I believe it is wrong. Prisons should be used to help people who have committed crimes to become good, moral members of society again. This prison is a good idea.

There must be something wrong with that link which I`m missing. A prison which looks much better than most people`s homes, full of entertainment and comfort, almost entirely made up of glass, and decorated with sharp-looking sticks?

Then again, what kind of criminal is good enough for a 5-star prison? Besides, I don`t see any mention or indication of a prison in the photos besides the caption. Can anyone translate the text in front of the building?

Using prisons as a punishment is a failed philosophy as it only holds criminals back from any hope of leading a normal life. However, lack of punishment means there`s no reason not to commit a crime.
Revenge is a failed philosophy as well as it`s simply not possible, and how is getting revenge for a crime any different than committing the original crime? How is murdering a murderer any different than if you murdered an innocent? It isn`t.
The entire concept of prisons is a failed system from all 3 philosophies: punishment, revenge, socializing.

since i`am from austria i feel obliged to comment on this.

@PianoMan21 i would say your father was being rather sarcastic. although we live in the 8th richest country in the world we do not all have living standards that are far above what this prison is looking like. many people live under conditions much worse.

but on the other hand the philosophy behind this was already stated by Winston Chruchill who once said that one of the most unfailing tests of a civilization is how a country treats its criminals.

well i too think that giving someone who has done wrong a chance to build up a new live in a healthy (if seperated) environment is doing more to resocialize the person than sticking him in a dirty rathole and treating him like an animal (like e.g. in the US ;-)).

after all putting criminals away from society is only one part of the plan. you should also work on the resocializing and therefore prisoners get the chance to get an education and integrate into society again.

The caption must be wrong. There`s no way a glass building is a prison, it`s simply too easy to escape from. Then they show images at the end of barred windows in an apparently separate building that actually is a prison and looks like one.

My father is from Austria. His explanation for this is as follows:
"You see, in Austria, this is how any prisoner would be treated. It is such a decline from the normal standard of living that no one would want to go there. All over the rest of the world, the prisons can only match if not better the slums and ghettos of their cities, but in Austria, they clearly worked long and hard to make the prisoners lives as unlivable as possible. Functional members of Austrian society are taken much more care of and have far better living conditions than what is given to these inmates."

according to modern philosophy, this is exactly the direction prisons should be heading. when people do wrong, it`s apparently better to focus on what they do right than to criticize their flaws. so there you go, maybe this is a good idea
