Most private conventions have strict rules stated on the terms of entry on digital/analog recording along with other clauses and you accept them upon receipt. DEFCON has few limits on digital/analog recording but, you can not do it clandestine nor without consent if you are a member of the press, you should know this. How she was spotted? Tip off, as well as not being able to talk basic tech even for a newbie.

I too am curious how it is they knew it was her. I don`t think they were being cruel. It seemed more like they were having fun with it. If I had been her I would have stopped and BS`d with them... asked them how they knew. I would have been curious... :P But that`s just me.

Hacking does not mean stealing credit card numbers.

They`re just looking for a challenge. So they try finding holes in applications and ways to do things with it that it`s not meant to do. Most hacks are completely harmless, like hacks you`ll find in the source code of webpages you visit every day.

To them it means just as much as any other guy showing off with his sports car.

Hacking is NOT illegal. HACKING is done by people who are looking for loopholes to help the security of a product. IE they are PAID for their services.

Cracking is doing the same thing for personal game. CRACKING is illegal.

most of them don`t have anything to hide. though they like most people want to know who is going to hear what you say so you can at least be PC. not all hackers are crooks!

When I search Yahoo! for DEFCON 15, the result that comes back is:
DEF CON
Yearly "underground" computer convention where the Black Hats meet the White Hats.www.defcon.org - 7k - Cached

If there are Black Hats there, then doesn`t that mean there are criminals there? Black Hats, by definition, are illegal hackers.

poor girl. she was just doing her assignment. besides, i know this sounds very republican and i apologize for that, but if they don`t have anything to hide, then they shouldn`t mind her being there. i mean hacking is in most cases ilegal and they`re having a convention for it with a bunch of people...

I would have done SO much more to her *drools*

Ok seriously she just went for it. Hence deserved it.

And to all idiots that keep saying these guys are all criminals: sorry for repeating, but you are indeed idiots. Find out what a programmer is before bashing!

Remember that movie with Angelina Jolie. I liked that movie.

Anyway, we can play the "definition" game, but I think everyone knows that hacking is illegal.

I think it was both sad and funny the way they followed her out to her car. I`m not so sure it really accomplished anything though.

Ehh, I feel like someone owes me the last 15 or so minutes of my life back for taking part in this post.

A HACKER is not a criminal, you are confusing that with a CRACKER. Also, they prolly picked her out because she was a pretty woman. The majority of computer types are men, I`ve been to many computer events where I don`t see another woman besides myself (and I go just to tag along with my husband.)

As a resident of Kansas I take offense that Dateline NBC thinks a majority of us give a drat about their "Shocking" reports. News Lady was offered press badges but declined, she got what she deserved. I`ll bet you she`ll never be that stupid again

I feel no sympathy for the reporter or for Dateline - yet, the worst thing about this video was how utterly socially awkward and geeky the "hackers" were. The guy at the podium completely ruined his chance to be witty and smooth, and just kinda bumbled his way throughout the entire speech. Then the kids following her outside sounded like they were drooling over a female (i swear i even heard a snort by one of them). Every time one of the guys ran to catch up you could hear them wheezing. Their comments were pathetic and they failed at "owning" her in anyway and ended up just looking like sweaty, socially retarded, tongue-tired morons.

Who cares about hackers anyways? I mean yeah, maybe businesses and the like should, but it seems way too hard in my opinion to convince the public that someone would go through tons of trouble just to destroy or control your home computer. Every time I hear about hackers in the news, they are trying to convince people that all they want are your CC and SS numbers and the like.

I don`t know about you, but I wouldn`t spend hours upon hours finding a vulnerability that has yet to be solved, code an exploit script, and gain access to someone`s computer JUST to get a simple credit card number when most dumbf***s are more than happy to hand that kind of crap away to phishers.

DEFCON isn`t full of evil, law-breaking hackers, either. Of course, none of this matters. The only thing that matters to the news is ratings. To be honest, I wish they would do this story. It would be much better than stories of that damn bridge or Princess Di.

Those of you complaining about this "undercover" event do a little research before you post. Defcon is an openly advertised convention, the woman who was outed was given MULTIPLE chances to obtain a press pass and continue her investigations above board but refused to do so. She continued filming people secretly without their permission, yet you defend her whilst people film her openly as she leaves?

She got what she deserved, simple."

Do you suppose the people that hackers hack know their being hacked? Do you think Hackers get a "hacker card" before checking into your computer?

DrewK hopefully some hacker that has come across your comments f.ucks your computer up. These people are partly or mostly responsible for developing alot of the programs you use today. Security loopholes will be mentioned and discussed yes, but it isn`t the purpose of the convention to discuss hacking into people`s bank accounts or federal databases. You, being older, are completely ignorant to many things so kindly shut up.

Computer hackers are criminals, plain and simple. The fact that they actually have a convention, then get offended when people try to bust them, is completely infantile. That reporter did the smart thing by not saying anything to them while walking calmly to her car. Also, just a news flash, not all reporters use paparazzi tactics and to assume she does simply shows your immaturity and your lack of understanding of the reporting business.

DrewK, there are many legit attendees to the convention. You are automatically assuming that all hackers are indeed crackers/script kiddies. There are many people from government agencies that attend the Defcon convention annualy in order to learn about the latest security hacks. Indeed there are even different groups of hackers (white hat, black hat). Learn to think before you open your mouth. FYI some of the best programmers and coders out there are considered "hackers"

How on earth is this a big deal? Going too far? All they did was follow her to her car. It`s a free country. They didn`t touch her, or threaten her (in the parking lot, there was that, "tar and feather" joke in the conference hall).

With what I was reading from the comments, it`s like y`all just saw someone get beaten to a bloody pulp.

I`m no fan of hackers. They had an opportunity to show they were somehow better than the reporter, but in the end they came out looking like a bunch of jerks. Who likes the stalking reporters and why would you want to emulate them? No class.

And yes, they could get in trouble for harrassing her, especially since they got derogatory.

Wouldn`t be surprised if NBC got on their butts about it...

nice comment there, dumbass, what about this makes you say that, all they were doing was following her around like she would follow anyone else for a story, i`m glad she didn`t tell any of them off, because that would have made her a HUGE hypocrite, i think she handled the situation fairly well.

and to every who says they seem nerdy, it`s probably because they are, DEFCON is a hacker convention... who do you expect to be there?

Try reading some of the articles about this (such as This One ) before making comments about it being harsh. Imho she got what she deserved. Dateline NBC really does have a habit of misrepresenting people, and they were going for the shocking "OMG I SAW TEH HACKERS TRY TO RULEZ TEH INTERNETS" kind of story.
