Actually, one of the main reasons for this is they just recently changed what it meant to be overweight. You can be considered overweight now, but if you go back 10 years you would be average.

Also, it`s not like these results are a conservative estimate, they probably go to a gym full of fat people, do the survey, and say they have accurate results. The only way to get accurate figures would be impractical and expensive, so all they can really do is guess.

Can you shut up about fat people. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist because I belive they should all be shot in the head, BUT WHO CARES IF SOMEONE IS FAT!? It really doesn`t matter if you`re a bit jiggly. All this fitness talk just fuels the `fitness` industry so people can rip people off because they feel bad about being overweight. If you`re going to be fat, enjoy it. If you`re not going to be fat, enjoy it. The truth is life sucks no matter what you are.

I can clearly see that most people don`t understand this fat gene. When some half-assed doctor or scientist dares to bring up the "fat gene", here`s what they mean. They think that there is a possibility that there is a gene that could have a minor or major effect on obesity. Yet whenever someone here`s this phrase they instantly think "a birth-thingy that grows fat lol," keep in mind this could mean it impacts how you digest food, or how you burn calories. Seriously, losing weight is hard, and any fatty who hears that it`s not his fault is probably going to do backflips. This is the equivalent of putting money into research that will prevent lung cancer instead of telling people to put the drating cigarette down. And people love to point out that if one twin is fat, the other usually will be. Isn`t it so weird that people who spend a large, impressionable portion of their lives with the same diet tend to have the same weight? So get out your bike and ride to centra

Fat EASILY can be genetic....If your parents were fat.

THANK YOU! IT IS THE OLDER PEOPLE!

If you haven`t noticed, it`s mostly teenagers who are in good shape, and well, your middle-aged people, well....uh...yeah! You get the point. ESPECIALLY teenage girls.....very good shape...I should know.

That being said, maybe you fat-haters should try out some positive reinforcement with the next fat person you see, in stead of the negative, and watch their face.

They`ll be so amazed, because do you know how often we fat people get "Hey! That workout looks really fun, and i bet its helping you a lot!"??? Next to never. Most the time, its: "You`re going to break the treadmill, cow!"

Think about that next time you decide to make fun of a fat person....

Yeah, i was gonna say what redflare said. Muscle is denser than fat, so most athletes weigh more than you think. They should do one of these with a body fat percentage or something like that.

Take this with a grain of salt, people. Working out gets you to weigh more. People like our Governator and just about any athlete in the US are considered `heavily obese`. Consider, also, the fact that the weightlifting taboo that they had around the late 80s, early 90s isn`t around anymore, and as it stopped you had more people working out, more people lifting, more people getting better to compete more. Usually, @ the HS level if you`re a serious athlete, you`re `obese`. Doesn`t matter if you`re skinny.

Welps, I`m going to go stick my finger down my throat now. See ya later!

Just kidding, of course. It`s terrible that there`s an "epidemic" of obesity in this country, but I have no sympathy for overweight people. I`m slightly overweight myself and I can say that it`s all my doing, and I think that the same goes for 90% of the overweight/obese people in America. None of that "genetics" stuff is true about fat. If by "genetics" you mean "how your family raises you," then, yes. If you`re born to a fat family who doesn`t wish to change their lifestyle, then it`s likely you`ll fall into the same trap. It`s your own fault if you`re fat, most of the time. Hate to drill ya on that.
I lost my train of thought. Bottom line, don`t eat so much junk, and try walking to places instead of driving everywhere.

Okay. To all of you little snotbags that are saying `omg, why can`t they put the fork down and go to the gym?` or `god. all fat people do is stuff themselves.` You need to shut up. It`s proving how stupid you`re being. To the males: You`re just being males. I understand that. But haven`t YOU ever had a good friend that may have gotten overweight/was overweight? Or do you refuse to even talk to people like that? Get over yourselves. Please. To the females: Y`know what, you`re not so perfect yourself. If people don`t like your weight, they won`t like your hair. If they don`t like your hair, they`ll hate your clothes. You can`t win. People are so critical. Loosen up. You could be a fatarse in 5-10 years. You never know. Many people aren`t fat because they stuff themselves and shove cartons of ice cream down their throats. It`s often genetics or a health problem they have. So seriously. Open your eyes.

"
73% of the American population is overweight, I am not joking."

I like how EVERY person from Europe is an expert on American weight issues, they act like they are the skinniest bunch of people ever and they don`t have one fat person who exists within Europe.

You should stop being that roostery, it`s extremely annoying.

Wow... This scale is remarkably skewed. The increments are so small that it makes you think that there`s HUGE differences between THEN and NOW, when there`s really not... Granted that over 25% of the population is certainly more than 5%, but its not over FIFTY percent, is it? If it were, they would have used a less skewed scale, I`m guessing...

feildin is right, by the government`s standard of obese (bmi scale) I`m considered borderline overweight (160 lbs at 5`7.5"). i wear it like a trophy too cause I worked hard for that good kind of mass :-P I just don`t get why America glamorizes food so much... i mean, a lot of it is just plain gross (ie: Spam, Oscar Meyer Bologna, most soft drinks...) and I used to be overweight, I was the fat kid in school until I hit 9th grade. If you are overweight and reading this, I`m not looking down on you because I was there too, and an active lifestyle is the best way to live.

One thing to remember is this is using the governments calculation of BMI, which is your weight divided by your height while it is true the nation is fatter, the weight/height method is extremely inaccurate using it any rather muscular person is considered overweight.

On a serious note, this is a big problem. Look at all the fat little kids running around today. I think it stems from the garbage that passes for food that we get in this country today, 80% of which is imported from china and else where. I hope people start to realize what poor quality it is and start being more conscientious about what they put in thier and thier childrens bodies.

it should actually only start in 1991 as the first page, 1985, is misleading as most of the page is `no data`. But it gives the impression that there`s far fewer fat people as they use the colour white to show that.

oh, I retract my previous statement (even though technically it is true) -

http://www.obesityinamerica.org/trends.h...

It says there that it`s a BMI over 30 (which approximates to 30 lbs overweight for a 5`4 person... so they`re the same thing) - I just knew I`d seen it in the BMI form :-)
