Actually American interstate highways were never built with the intention of being used for airstrips.

This clip was edited. The whole clip, which I saw on cnn.com, showed the cop chasing that white car that stopped next to the plane, on foot until it pulled over to the shoulder, like he was ignorning the airplane all together. No explaination of why he did that though.

"Not as scary as if there were a gorilla flying the plane."

Or if there were a bunch of muthaf*ckin` snakes on that muthafu*kin` plane.

Anyhow, seeing a plane suddenly appear in MY rear-view mirror would certainly encourage me to pull over.

We once had to write a fictional essay about a story of a plane landing on a highway way back in school. Good old times ...

Modern highways are quite unsuitable as runways (at least for bigger planes). Highways are designed to have as little straight and even parts as possible. You generally use curves to plan a highway as it fits better into the landscape and long straight passages result in less attentive drivers. Yes, I just wanted to be smartass ;)

that was an old WW2 plane that got restored by a private owner it seems like

and yeah, the first US Highways were made big enough for planes to land on them on purpose. it was their... "secret awesome hidden power", if you will

I believe interstates were originally designed so that they *could* allow planes to land and/or take off, mostly in case of war, but in emergencies as well. That`s why interstates are supposed to have a straight run of a certain distance every X miles.

I could be wrong. Regardless, if something like that is landing on the interstate, you might want to move out of the way...

eisenhower made it procedure to make one of every 5 miles on a highway straight, as to be used if necessary during wartime as a runway. this guys knew about it.

That happened in Wisconsin by Oshkosh where the EAA(Experimental Aircraft Association) has an airshow every year. This was due to engine trouble and was all over local news. No one was seirously injured.

I heard "Fond du Lac 911" and I was like, "damnit ...Wisconsin again?" I kind of forgot about the airshow - I`m not looking forward to it. But anyway, it would`ve sucked to be on that highway :|

Cool, I didn`t know that flying cars were already out on the market! I guess any landing you can walk away from is a good one. That said, if I was stuck in traffic because of some plane I`d be pissed =)

I`d fly with him. He had engine trouble and made an emergency landing. Nice job.

Chuck would be proud... not Chuck Yeager the pilot; Chuck Norris the WWMD.

"One widely held dual-use-related belief is that one out of every five miles of the NHDS is mandated to be straight and level, capable of functioning as an emergency airstrip. Aside from the fact that, according to Weingroff, "no law, regulation, policy, or sliver of red tape requires that one out of every five miles of the interstate highway system be straight," it is virtually impossible from an engineering standpoint. The NHDS is composed of nearly 50,000 miles of road, meaning that almost 10,000 miles would need to be straight and level to conform to the supposed one-in-five-mile rule, a figure that is wildly unrealistic. In addition, from an aerial standpoint, an airstrip every five miles is superfluous, given the speed at which modern aircraft travel. Although there are long and level stretches of highway that could function as an emergency landing strip in a pinch, they are nowhere near as evenly parceled out as the one-in-five-mile rule would suggest."

Really long blurb there, but basically, no they were never "intended" to be used as airstrips. :)

lol that`s funny. Also, New Hampshire has no straight highways. I think there`s only 3 straight areas of 93 that i travle, and they`re all either uphill, too narro, or covered over by trees.
