    That can`t be good. =/
Fear is normal. Not a sickness or anything...
I mean, I can understand if they`re so scared they can`t leave the house for some reason, like if they have a fear of people or something. But if it`s being scared of a spider then don`t take medicine for that. >_> It`s good to be scared of things you`re supposed to be scared of.

Different clans of people, a tribe in Africa I`m thinking of specificly did this for years by brainwashing (military) and then cutting a small hole into the skin of the forehead (not all the way in, just a hole) then putting a coccaine mixture in and covering it before battle.

Some things are good to be scared of, but the majority of people all have irrational fears. Even if it`s their scared to stand out and not fit in by doing something original. If people can retain their normal emotions and personalities (sans the irrational fear) I think it`s a fine drug and it will help tons of people.

I skipped over reading the chemical jibjab. People need to be afraid, it`s a healthy thing, but if they`re constantly anxious they may need a drug to make them feel invincible for day-to-day stuff. But still, we don`t need to be coming up with drugs for everything.

The sad thing is no matter how remotely helpful this might be to a very small minority of people some will abuse it. Especially the military is a sure candidate for immoral abuse.

"Its might remove fear but doesnt remove common sense"

In some country the common soldier isn`t particularly known for his intelligence.

This drug would have to have some very very tight restrictions. Certainly it could help those with mental conditions or a terrible past, but it sounds like a drug with abuse possiblities.

I`m not worried about the military though. Fear is what keeps them safe, keeps them alert, and keeps them behind cover. Without fear, they would quite likely walk slowly towards the enemy shooting in their general direction on open ground.

theres also other good things to help with fear.

i think most drugs make you do things you wouldnt normally do because your afraid of doing them?

afraid to walk up to a guy 10 times bigger then you and punch him? well... get drunk on alcohol, thatll solve that.

afraid to jump out of the window because your scared youll fall to your death? no problem! some LSD will make you believe you can fly and falling is not a problem.

    catch my drift?

From what I read, this just helps you overcome the fears you already have. Read the thing about the mice and the electric shocks near the end. They only stopped being afraid after being exposed to the same environment but seeing that it`s safe.

bajatar: well everything is good until someone abuses it, tobacco is great on bee stings, but people add chemicals and smoke it. Food is good for you, but people abuse it.

blipflip. Who`s to say what fears we learn? When you`re small you`ll touch a stove because you`re curious about it unless your parents tell you "no! hot!" so tech. every fear is learned. That`s why little kids are so reckless with themselves because they`re not scared.

ppl will abuse this stuff, and not just use it for severe phobias that affect their life. but fear is a good thing, it has the same purpose as pain, and yet some ppl are dumb enough to think that they could live normally without either.

I don`t think anyone who doesn`t have to cope with irrational fears in their everyday life has a right to put this down. The article implied that this drug eliminates fears you`ve already gotten, not basic fears such as don`t jump off a cliff.

But I agree this would have to be very heavily restricted.

Fear is what holds us back from doing dangerous and potentially fatal things. No fear - most likely death.

Liquidglass: As I understand it, basic fears such as fear of pain are "hardwired" into the brain. The reason babies are so reckless is that they havn`t worked out what hurts yet. Adults have. But I don`t exactly have a degree in neuroscience, so I may be wrong about the type of fear it supresses. However since there are already many drugs that suppress basic inhibitions (Anybody heard of alcohol?) I doubt they would bother to report on or indeed make another.

This would have to be tightly regulated of course , but it could have tremendous potential in treating irrational fears.

They won`t be selling it over the counter, and since it doesn`t give a high I doubt that drug dealers will bother with it. The military won`t bother with it because a fearless soldier is a dead soldier.

Could some people please think before posting? I agree that this should not be made easily available; there`s no point complaining about that because it`s not going to happen.

Except that stand-alone apathy is not an affliction but rather just a different way of life. It`s only negative because you`re comparing it to its opposite, empathy.

I do not see this drug killing people. I see people killing themselves and others. When someone really pushes you to your limits, what keeps you from bashing in their skull with the nearest blunt object? fear of prison, fear of consequences and fear of retribution. This will make the world a much more dangerous and unpredictable place when you don`t know what the person next to you will do to get something without fearing consequences.

A small amount of people might find some of this and overdose and then that`s when teh thigns start to happen but if you read this clearly-- it`s quite a great discovery and find.

This can help those with life-affecting phobias and horriable pasts. And those that are back from duty in the military that have been severely and mentally affected permenantly.

So this is a good thing if used correctly and if it doesn`t get out of control.

Ok Ok Ok. I am working on my degree in neuropsychology and have know about this stuff for a while now. This stuff will not make you fearless by any means. It is not dangerous and if it got into the wrong hands almost nothing would happen. It is not a drug that gives you some kind of high where you would think you are invincible. Not even close. This is a protien destabilizer that prevents memories from forming and takes away the emotional content from a memory if the drug is taken while recalling a emotional memory. If people abused it they would just forget what they did while they were on it, but they wouldnt do anything out of the ordinary for themselves anyway. The person who wrote this article should have picked a better title. One that isnt incredibly misleading. Either that or they should leave the neuroscience to neuroscientists.

I wonder what the side effects are, but other than that, it can`t be that bad unless people start screwing around with it. This stuff is supposed to only remedy memories associated with fear rather than the fear itself. So no painful and traumatic past to recall = no painful and traumatic past to fear...or something like that. Would probably be pretty useful for crippling fears.

Personally I think its good idea.

You have to realize fear is good, but it can also inhibit you from doing things that aren`t really dangerous. In extreme chances if your unlucky they are.

Because you have no fear, doesn`t mean you will become instantly stupid. Such as, people are afraid of guns and people shooting them. Ok, we remove that fear, you still know "Someone shooting a gun at me = death" But because you have no fear syndrome, you can actively think without being inhibited and make a smarter decision on how to react and get away. It does not mean your going to charge face first into the guy to stop him.
