Um, no.

Becasue you`re instrument rated doesn`t permit you to land in low-visibility conditions at the airport.

You must have special training and equipment to land in zero-zero conditions. Look up Cat I, Cat II, Cat III a, b, c approaches.

Anybody who says that us British have an accent.. WRONG!

For it is YOU who has the accent!

Aha, may I remind everyone that `retard` means "to slow down".

I remember landing at Heathrow during the middle of the morning with a fog bank underneath the plane. I was waiting and waiting for us to hit the ground but I kept thinking we were still up in the clouds. Little did I know the fog was lying right above the ground and the runway came up from nowhere!

i used to work with airplanes and the frequencies that they are on and how they interfere with one another and I can assure you that although the airline does not want you to use you cell phone during the flight it would not mess up anything and it would not cause any damage. the frequencies that the aircraft uses and the cell phone are completely different and cannot harm or interfere with each other although many people say it does

As a commercial pilot, I assure you there was nothing to be frightened of - or perhaps everything to be frightened of, depending how you look at it. Very few pilots EVER look outside during landing, which shows you how accurate our instruments and data from flight control are. AND why you should never use your cell phone on a plane, especially during landing... just in case you interfere with that data exchange.

It`s a good thing that technology and communication allows you to determine where exactly to begin landing. They were just going in blindly, and should they miss the mark the first time, at 300ft, there`s no way they could have landed in a fashionable manner.

That`s nothing. My uncle landed a plane in snow while the runway was on ice in almost complete white out. Turns out Johnny Cash was on the plane and went to the roosterpit and thanked him on his good landing.

I can do that.

Mind you everyone dies but I would at least hit the runway. 100% guaranteed or your money back.

That`s not that excessive. It looks it, but it ain`t, it`s just ground fog from a winter late afternoon early evening flight judging by them landing into the sun. The worst I had was at Luton, some 40 miles away; was so bad the captain told us it would be bad first - when we touched down you could barely make out the end of the 737 800 winglet, let alone any terminal buildings...

REMINDED ME WHEN I RODE CO`PILOT IN A CESSNA OVER AT BAJA CALIFORNIA. EVERYTHING WAS BLANKETED IN WHITE. THEN WE DOVE THROUGH THE CLOUD COVER. IT WAS BLISS!!!

Nice landing! Definitely need to have some ice in your veins to be a pilot. Remember: The oxygen masks that fall from the ceiling are only there to muffle the screaming =)

Spermbubble, I did! Haha

You know, I heard "Retard" and thought "it couldn`t be, it must be "Return" or something". Guess I was wrong lol

Oh and btw, didn`t know there were rooster pits in planes :P

Here`s the answer to the commonly posted "retard" thing:

Retard
This word is a callout in roosterpit systems used in aircraft manufactured by Airbus. It`s a reminder to pilots to bring the thrust levers to idle during the landing maneuver, just prior to touchdown. If the roosterpit system detects that you still have power set at 20` radio altitude the call out `retard, retard` happens.

does anyone know how old this is or where the plane was comming from? this could have been my Dad`s plane. with that in mind, I`m really glad this didn`t crash.

1 in 10 landings are actually done by pilots these days. Most of those are done so the pilot can stay in practice. The "voice" was the computer. This landing was computer controlled.

That`s quite amazing.
I`m scared of flying, so if I was one of those passengers I`d probably have made a mess of myself.

Pabasa, the landing lights don`t do anything. They land using the avionics. Pilots don`t need to look out the windows for anything really. So landing in zero visibility is no different than landing on a clear day.

Pilots (in the US) certify for VFR and IFR. That`s Visual Flight Rules and Instrument Flight Rules. Pilots who fly commercial jets are IFR certified, and could land a plane with windows blacked out.

yea, retard is slow, and its landing on autoand, so the computers in the plain do it all, because you cant see a damn thing. what got me was the autopilot calling 500, going into the fog, 400 and you cant see a damn thing XD

Did I hear `retard`?

And wow, landing just based on landing lights. I`m surprised accidents don`t happen more often with that kind of fog.

lemurarmy, I believe the voice reciting the altitude was somebody in the control tower. Could be wrong, though; just my guess.
