This is quite the leap from the robots seen in I, Robot. I think they should`ve concentrated more on more responses than trying to make it look human. Also, the line "Someday I`ll find you, and we`ll be good friends," creeped the Hell out of me for some reason. Overall, this is amazing. The only thing we`ve yet to master is free robotic movement. (Look up the Honda robot to see reference.)

Robots are already being used for manual labor and putting alot of people out of work, but when they are smarter than us the scientists and engineers will also be obsolete. If we give robots enough intelligence they`ll eventually realize that we are not needed anymore.

I disagree, I don`t think robots will ever be smarter than us. Because nothing created is ever smarter than the creator. It`s like saying we`ll someday be smarter than God (pick your higher power, I picked mine)

For robots to come to the decision that humans aren`t needed means that they aren`t intelligent enough and are just at a stage in "robotic evolution"

A robot will probably not in the overlookable future be smarter than we are. It`s extremely difficult to electronically produce something that works in the same way as our chemical brains, especially since there are so many things in our brains we haven`t really understood how it works.

They are all pre recorded responses, I wouldn`t be surprised if they just put face recognition software in it and told it to play a recorded message for each person. There is no other way to put in that amount of emotion into the voice of it. I don`t think there was AI at all.

There is a fine difference between getting a robot to do calculations and actions that humans have programmed it to do, and actual smartness i.e. thinking freely. They can make it able to do all these things but it can never actually do EVERYTHING, because it doent know it can because its a robot. It cant think. Yeah, its clever in the sense it can count and reply and move and stuff but it cant think anything that humans havnt programmed it to do, in other words, cant suddenly decide though free will that it can kill humans. Unless they make robots for war.
And humans cant programme it to think either.

    Anyhow,
    That robot was FREAKY.
I did not like that at all, it was too friendly. Why did they made it english? I think it might be because it is a more pronounced language if that makes sense.

ZoZo, I think theres much more to knowledge than what we are told...

Robots can learn. They learn to put names to faces. They learn to listen and respond. What`s saying they can`t learn to feel anger, or hate?

They may be able to learn what is right and wrong. They may be able to know about consequences.

The fact is that we just don`t know what they may be able to learn, and only time will tell.

This one isn`t impressive because it`s saying preprogrammed responses. It`s not literally creating replies to your queries like real AI would do. It`s simply delivering a line that was already recorded.

The face looks great though. Wafuu is of the opinion that we should be improving AI and making robots be able to perform simple tasks before we waste time and money making them look real.

Ditas: We plan on robots learning on their own, but again, if they decide we`re not needed then obviously it`s an ill formed decision. I didn`t say they wouldn`t be able to think, they just wont` be able to outsmart us. Whenever true AI is created it will be like our evolution and begin thinking, which no computer can be nearly as efficient or complex as our brains. They have a long way to come to catch up `thinking wise.` There`s a difference between learning facts, and reasoning.

And yes I can do everything a calculator can do, it just makes it easier. How you think a calculator was made in the first place? Equations and formulas had to be put in and stored so I could push some buttons and have and answer. Any one can do the formulas/equations a calculator does, it just takes longer. But when a calculator knocks on my door to shoot me then I`ll let you know I`m wrong.

Wow. Way to group all scientists together. You do realize that a scientist who is interested in robots is almost certainly not going to be interested in global warming or the cure for AIDS, right? I`m not saying scientists shouldn`t be doing those things, but if you want to point fingers then maybe you should blame the amount of money that goes into funding a robot vs. the fight against global warming. Hell, not much is even happening against global warming in the US because of the money issue. It`s doesn`t really have much to do with the scientists, it`s more with the framework that they are a part of. Okay, ending the rant now.

There is no reason that computers can`t be smarter then humans, especially when their memory (data) can be recalled much more accurately then our own.

"Robots have already been created who can `discover` things they haven`t been `taught`"

This is a true statement. I was watching a special on an advanced satellite NASA has launched or plans on launching, equipped with only the most current AI technology. When run through simulations that presented a number of problems for the AI to evaluate, it solved these problems in ways that the engineers didn`t anticipate. Robots need not be smarter than us to offer a few surprises of their own, and if they can, who`s to say they are not smarter than us?

"We really don`t need emotional robots."

I entirely agree. The last thing I want to hear is a robot claiming to love another being because if it can love, it has equal potential to hate.

I`m sure Einstein was smarter than his dad. Anyway, A.I. isn`t about making a smart computer, we can already do that. Its about making a computer than can think for itself and teach itself, at which stage smart is infinite.

Zero: it depends on what level you`re looking at creation/creator. Did his mother and father combined create Einstein? If so then it would be their combined intelligence that perhaps never got exercised.

But if you believe in God then you believe he created us and would give us the ability to create a learning robot. Within your wildest dreams (outside of sci fi movies) robots would never be ultimately smarter than us. Because a robots function can never match that of a human brain. Unless we clone ourselves/brain. Then it would be considered human and not a robot.

and Clayboy, the human mind is infinately better than any computer we can create, and our memories are just as prone to recalling information, the speed and accuracy is in the method. Also the way we don`t take care of ourselves is like allowing a computer to become dusty and virus infected. Try it see how well it runs.

Even if the stage is infinite the robot stage of thinking would start long after humans so they`d have a lot of catching up to do.

You`re suggesting that they would come up with entirely new and profound ideas. If they operate as a human would then they`ll have the same small thoughts and discovery. Their "profound" ideas will most likely be some that have already been thought of, just like a human.

Unless you`re saying their brain doesn`t work the same, then you`re just contradicting yourself.

I get the feeling that the folks who think this is the start of the matrix kind of want it to happen. It`ll give them an excuse to walk around wearing sunglasses and leather trench coats regardless of weather, and not get laughed at.

"I never knew that tons of people on IAB were idiots. "

    unfortunately, they are.

I also agree that robots are no smarter than the maker of them. It is gonna be a long time before robots start acting human, so stop with all the nightmares and killings and taking over the world bs. I thought it was still a pretty good simulation, even though they were pre-created responses. "Someday I will find you, and we will be good friends, then I can examine how you humans function and plot my mass-murder plans" -evil smile- haha, thought i`d throw my own joke in there.

I`m gonna have nightmares that that thing is gonna crawl out from under my bed and strangle me in my sleep -shudder-

Robots don`t need to be smarter than us. They can still pwn us.

Also, this is not *true* AI. Truth is, no one has been able to code true AI because we haven`t figured out how it works yet. It is intelligent, but only in the things we let it do, it has a very limited learning capacity.

And to those of you who are like "kill it!!!11", its just a conversational robot. >_> It can do nothing more than analyze responses and reply to them using data on grammar and definitions downloaded into its memory. <.< And also, a robot can never take the place of a person in jobs like therapy or counseling... you need to be able to understand emotions to help people mentally...

retarded people are afraid of robots. And also, instead of just saying "omg that was liek soo creepy!" maybe you could think of something remotely intelligent to say rather than what 70 people already said. I think this technology is cool. I would buy one if it could do stuff like clean my bathroom and play guitar with me, lol. I wouldn`t exactly be afriad of it "lashing out" at me seeing as robots don`t have emotions and violence tends to come from anger. Anyway, i`m rambling.. see ya

if you read the ending, you will see that the purpose of this video was to demonstrate the look of the synthetic skin. "jules" obviously was pre-programed to emulate intelligence, and the people around him simply acted the part.
