You think they might use some kind of preservatives?

But fries are just potatoes fried with salt. No special chemicals like in the sandwiches and stuff.

but them other chips broke down after like, two weeks, they went black... this is pretty disturbing, how many preservatives muct be in there :|

What he should have done it chewed them all the spit it out in the containers. THAT`S what`s going in your stomach, not even including the digestivey goodness from your stomach.

oh, to the person above me, to dry out and not mold they would need about a 99.8% air tightness...guess what makes it air tight.....CHEMICALS, YAY!

.....im sorry, there would need to be a friggen BRICK OF SALT with the fries to keep em like that....you people just dont want to admit your country has an obesity problem

First, you have to remember that mcdonalds fries, get colder faster, so there wasnt as much moisture in the container for them to mold.
So basically for the fries, they dried out instead of molded. Especially w/ as much salt as they use at the mcdonalds stores, it would easily dry up and not mold.

Also, when we "digest food" it begins to break down as we chew, then we have special digestive chemicals and acids in our stomachs that break things down.

Yes its bad for us.
Yes we should stay away from all fast food restaurants.

But no, its really not as bad as he`s making it out to be.
And McDonalds fries (I worked there in highschool) are kept frozen, are precut, salted after cooking- they are only good for 6 months frozen.
The burger patties about 3 months.

They didn`t decompose cos they hadn`t been touched and other that moisure in the air, they`re dry because they get deep fried which gets rid of water.

YOU are a f*cking idiot. Do you see a huge surgeon general`s warning on the fries telling about the harmfulness of their preservatives? Are there organizations (such as DARE) campaigning against the preservatives used in these fries? What kind of diseases have been linked to these preservatives? Not to mention that fries are a FOOD and cigarettes are a DRUG, and almost all drugs are harmful in some way...

Please, enlighten me... or admit that your comparison was complete bullsh*t.

The only thing harmful about McDonald`s fries is their enormous fat content, which is found in almost any food at almost any restaurant in the world.

the maccy D`s fries were really dry, no sauce or anything on them... the salt acts as a preservative... so just oxygen, no moisture and a perservative(salt)..
it sorta makes sense why it didnt erode away.

Ever heard of fiber? And what, you think if something doesn`t decompose (which, by the way, the fries do decompose) it`s just gonna sit in your stomach and never come out? Right...that`s why when dogs/kids/stupid people eat something they shouldn`t, like a little piece of metal, it comes back out, etc.

Oh, and LEARN HOW TO FREAKIN SPELL AND USE GRAMMAR. I love how any kind of debate link brings all the idiots out.

hmm, what does that have to do with breaking down in the stomach? we have enzymes n crap inside our bodies for quick digestion :D

i work at mcdonalds and all we do is fry the chips then salt them.

But no idea what actually goes into them, they are a much paler yellow (almost white) than any normal fries when they come out of the freezer, so theres summat different about them.

Theyre disgusting anyway, KFC fries are better, plus any fast food joints chips go cold in about 5 minutes.

marvinius said, two things
1.all burgers are handled at one time with bare hands. hence the mould as i-am-emo pointed out. fries come out of the hot oil and are never touched with bare hands until they are in the glas.

2.other than the regular fries the mcdonalds fries are thin salty and probably very dry. so what happens in the first few days is that they dry out even more like chips. so not enough moisture for mould. you wouldn`t be surprised if you put pringles or something in the glass and look for them 10 weeks. they wouldn`t be mouldy either

Wow, the burgers got moldy… big shock. Ever leave a pumpkin out after Halloween too long? Ever see what happens to an animal after it dies? It’s just as nasty if not worse. As for the McFries, it’s not like they stay fresh. Sure, they sort of look the same but they rapidly dry out and mummify. I guarantee that the fries in that video were crispy and brittle by the end. That may be the reason they didn’t mold. Purification is dependant on moisture. As for the control group fries, they were thicker and retained more moisture hence the mold. You want to see something that really doesn’t rot? Try honey… that stuff has an insane shelf life.

Mcdonalds is bad for you, but not as bad as Spurlock makes it out to be. Other people have done experiments where they eat at Mcdonalds every day for a month, but eat portions realative to their size and dont force themselves to eat when their not hungry, and they actually lose weight.

I`m pretty sure the salt on those fries would keep them pretty moisture free. And since the mold needs moisture (hence the foggy jars), the bacteria wouldn`t grow.

He also didn`t clean the containers b4 starting the experiment (or at least not that I saw). Most of the mold, fungi, bacteria, ect. were probably already in the jars & they just used the burgers as a food sorce. Notice all the burgers contatin bread & meat, which the fries do not. The "germs" may feed off of those two sources. None the less, still freaky.

I already knew that McD fries don`t go bad. I know for a fact that if you drop a fry in your car, it will stay there for years in the same stale state.

Have you ever tried eating McDonalds fries after a day? Try it. They`re already cold and stale, and they get this weird gritty feeling when you eat them. They taste horrible, even if you try to reheat them. In reality, McDonalds fries go bad after a few hours because as soon as they`re cold, they go stale and taste horrible.

Well, neither would the baby formula, hydrogenated oils, tanning, liquor, oxygen bar, or most fast-food businesses. There are many, many things in the world that are not good for you, and yet, people still insist that they`re just fine, otherwise, they wouldn`t be open to the public.

McDonalds fries are chemically frozen in order to preserve them. That way they will keep longer and be able to serve longer.
Also, the potatoes used in McDonalds french fries all come from one main food provisioner who used "special chemicals" in ensure his produce a higher yeild.

Legacy is a tard.

Take a potato chip and leave it in a jar for a few weeks. Nothing will happen. Mold causing bacteria won`t grow on a potato that`s been deep fried and covered in salt. There`s not nearly as much moisture as there is in those sandwiches.

"If people weren`t allowed to use harmful substances in their products, the cigarrete buisness would be non-existent."

Zoneking, I`m sorry, but you`re the moron, the other fries were also deep fried for odd minutes at this random temperature above 300 degrees. Already, it has been determined it`s not BACTERIA that causes mold (although that may have helped the slime process), SPORES IN THE AIR cause mold. The salt, as well as frying (yes it does help, but it`s not the sole cause) which dries the moisture out, is what causes the fries to last longer. They`re also much, much smaller than most other fries, so frying makes them almost crispy like a tortilla chip (also a fried starch, that can last for months laying around randomly, salted with almost no moisture left)... but... it`s not bacteria.

ARE YOU ALL MORONS???
The reason that there is nothing growing on the french fries is simple!!!!
When you make a hamburger, or chicken, or fish sandwich, you use mayo, ketchup, lettuce, pickles, tomato etc. etc. all of which are FRESH items and are TEEMING with bacteria!! THIS is what creates the mold issue on the burgers.
WITH THE FRENCH FRIES they are deep fried in 375 degree fat for 3 minutes, and therefore any living organism that had been on the potato is now obliterated from the heat!!!! The french fries are literally sterilized when deep fried, which is why they do not decompose!!
YEESH! GO GET SOME EDJAMACATION PEOPLE!!

Now, if he wanted to prove the McDonald`s food was the culprit in obesity, he should have done EVERYTHING ELSE THE SAME, and simply changed his diet to McDonald`s. If he got unhealthy/fat/sick, boom! Theory proven! Thank you and good night!

Thanks I-am-bored. I think this broke me from my fast food addiction. BTW does subway count.

Super Size Me was a gigantic failure in its purpose. He was trying to see whether McDonald`s food was the catalyst causing health problems in people. This was a guy who started out in above average health, exercising daily, fairly ripped, eating healthy, and taking vitamins.

Now, if he wanted to prove the McDonald`s food was the culprit in obesity, he should have done EVERYTHING ELSE THE SAME, and simply changed his diet to McDonald`s. If he got unhealthy/fat/sick, boom! Theory proven! Thank you and good night!

Instead, the idiot stopped exercising (unhealthy), stopped taking vitamins (unhealthy), walked as little as possible (not healthy), and generally became sedentary. The whole experiment was invalid! He tried to act, in the end, like it was just the food that made him fat and sick. Could it also have been the fact that you became a lazy, inactive chump??? Could it be that going from an exercise enthusiast to an immobile lump might have had adverse effects??? What a joke.

A lot of you are misunderstanding the experiment. It`s not an experiment on how fast you digest the food. You`ll digest any type of food within 24 hours (mostly).

It`s an experiment on preservatives. How long food from McD vs food from non-McD will last uneaten. As mentioned previously, a lot of preservatives are considered unhealthy, so the longer the food lasts, the less healthful it is (if you follow that view of course).

Don`t miss the point.

Potatoes are pretty much just starch, so it would be your saliva that does the job, not the stomach acid. Amylase FTW.

all the salt on the french fries probably preserved them.

I work at McDonalds. It`s just a summer job
Did you know that all the meat patties sit in a tray filled with grease? And the onions are actually dried up onions in a bag, and we soak them in water all day. And the sausages from breakfast, when cooked leave a black tar-like substance on the grill. Our regular meat only get cooked for 25 seconds, and quarter pound meat for 2 mins. I`ve found out so many gross things while working there... And you know what sucks? When you make a bigmac, knowing how gross and unhealthy it is, and you see that it`s a sweet old lady ordering it.

Probably because of the salt. McDonalds always salt the heck out of their fries.

Mcdonalds is the most disgusting fast food chain ever. I wouldn`t even give them my money to do this expirement, I`d rather just buy my own fixings and make my own hamburger.

stupid experiment
you can do the same thing with nuts
put a nut on the table and wait a month
i dont think the nuts will change soon
so i can conclude that nuts are unhealty ?

But surely, moudly food is bad, fries do not go mouldy ---> fries are good for you! (only joking, I know they`re not)

I watched this film in college but we didn`t watch the whole thing. We didn`t see anything really gross like this and it was right before lunch so I just remember have a serious craving for McNuggets.

I think that McDonalds is okay occasionally, but anything will make you ill if you eat that and nothing else for a month.

Lastly, no food will sit in your stomache for a month. They digest and find their way out in 24-48 hours.

I used to eat dratloads of McDonalds, I`m no Morgan Spurlock but I managed 4 in a week once.

Then I decided that, as much as I enjoyed it, McDonalds really isn`t all that healthy, and I went cold turkey on it.

Now, even if it`s only one fry, I get indigestion from eating McDonalds. That can`t be good.

What exactly is this experiment proving?

The French Fries don’t break down in air, so they won’t break down in your stomach? I am afraid they will break down, otherwise you would die eating them.

There are plenty of foodstuffs you could have put in that jar that wouldn’t have decomposed after 10 weeks, does this mean all these foods are evil?

I’m off to get a double cheeseburger meal from McDs! Have fun with your poor science!

I beg to differ, KFC chips are by far THE BEST in the fast food business. I love the salt xD

punk1n - this is a test on preservatives being used. Quite a number of people beleive (myself included) that too much preservatives is very bad for your health, in a myriad of ways.

Salt is a good preservative, though, and cosidering the amount of salt in the french fries I wouldn`t be surprised it took longer than other food to decay. I *am* surprised at how long it took (or didn`t take) to decay.

Also remember that the jars dont have stomach acid in them to help break the food down, your stomach does...

And those last ones he called `french fries` are what the UK would call `chips`, ie thick fries.

The reason the fries don`t get moldy is because they contain so much hydrogenated oil. And yes, hydrogenated oil is very bad for you--that`s why mold doesn`t grow on it.

that was an extremely biased test

the burgers were made fresh and they were hot. while that may not sound significiant it really is.

When the burger is hot it realeases steam which then turns into water in one for or the other. and when he put the lid on the water was just traped in there.

Burgers are kept in those packages so they retain their heat.

The fries are left in the open where they ahve cooled down enough where there is no more steam coming out from them.

Even if he did not touch the fries that would not stop mold.

Mold spreads via airborne spores. So mold is basically everywhere. Mold has little to do with germs or whatever. No need to touch anything ;)

`I don`t even know what that is` X50
The fries were starting to look a bit brown, I`d say the lack of microbes would be due to the lack of potato, moisture and abundance of salt. The frying process completely devoids the fries of life.

two things

1.all burgers are handled at one time with bare hands. hence the mould as i-am-emo pointed out. fries come out of the hot oil and are never touched with bare hands until they are in the glas.

2.other than the regular fries the mcdonalds fries are thin salty and probably very dry. so what happens in the first few days is that they dry out even more like chips. so not enough moisture for mould. you wouldn`t be surprised if you put pringles or something in the glass and look for them 10 weeks. they wouldn`t be mouldy either.

They didn`t.

im confused... do you want them to be moldy... what is the regular process supposed to look like.. but regardless.. when i seen this video.. for some reason i had some leftover mcdonalds in my fridge.. and the fries container had about 20 fries left.. so i sealed em up in a jar.. and i completely taped the jar closed (who knows if air was getting in the jars on there? and than i just dug a hole in my backyard and stuck em in there... in about a year ill look at em

McDonalds fries are chemically frozen in order to preserve them. That way they will keep longer and be able to serve longer.

Also, the potatoes used in McDonalds french fries all come from one main food provisioner who used "special chemicals" in ensure his produce a higher yeild.

Yeah, moisture is where my money is going on this one. The fries have none, therefore they don`t break down like the other sh*t.

Or vampire potatoes. They are making a comeback recently, so it`s not exactly a longshot. Just remember, their enemy is cowmeat, as long as you chase undead french fries with a hunk of dead cow, you`re golden.

Fries are /supposed to be/ potatoes fried with salt. McDonald`s used to flavor them with beef broth, so who knows what else they put in there? They may last longer because they`re cut so small, the frying process gets most of the water out first, but still... kinda scary.
