I really don`t see how she could do that. Imagine that conversation over the dinner table..

"Hey mom, I might be infertile."

"Oh, don`t worry, you can have some of my eggs, honey. That way you can have kids of your own -- only, they`ll be.. You know, your sibling.. Or something.."

Personally I would want to adopt, or have foster children but if this is what the kid wants to do when she is older then I don`t find it weird. I don`t see why the baby would call her grand mother mother, all she did was donate the egg. It`s no different then getting an egg from someone else.

She`s only leaving the option open for her daughter. The real ethical issue is raised only if her daughter chooses to go for it. And sulu, the mental retardation you`re referring to results from inbreeding, which this is not.

Ehm... hate to burst the bubble but that child would only be considered half-sibling at best. The sperm cell accounts for the other half.

"Because the human race started as just two people."

Yeah, isn`t it funny the Church condemns incest and yet they wish to accept a literal interpretation of the Bible? Trust me, religion makes much more sense when one accepts it`s inherently contradictory in practice and inherently ignorant in principle.

"The daughter could live a full and happy life without having children of her own."

some people feel their life is not complete until they have children, there is no bond or connection greater, and adopting, though better than nothing, is not the same at all and if there is an option to actually conceive a child, as long as it is willing it is ok, and should not be knocked down (or up as the case may be!)

most people do want kids someday and if they don`t thats fine. And i know a lot of you are thinking "well why not just adopt" you don`t seem to understand that it`s not the same.

It`s not that adoption is bad or wrong adoption is a very wonderful thing. But it`s not the same as having your own child. Having something live insdie for 9 month dependent on you for survivial. The maternal bonding of mother and child before the mother even sees the childs face oe the true sex. The pure love of being a mother.

It`s something most people my age wouldn`t understand. I think what the mother is doing is very kind of her but if the daughter does become infertile someday she mighb e better off getting eggs from another donor only because there could be bad repercussions (i know i spelled it wrong) with the DNA being so close together with mother and daughter. That would be my only concern

I am infertile myself and although I do not want to have children adoption isn`t an option for everyone, it is EXTREMELY expensive (probably more than you would believe. This mother is being extremely selfless and is providing ONE option for her daughter to consider.

Interesting. It makes you think, and that`s good. Also, at least the daughter has the choice of using her moms eggs or somebody elses (if she even would want children at all). I, personally, would find it a little odd if (for example) I were sterile and my dad said "No problem, R_U!..." :-/

Well Devi, after reading many of your negative comments over the months, I`m so happy to read that (and I`m assuming this from your post above) you won`t be reproducing.

Having more than two children increases the population. Having two keeps things status-quo. Having only one reduces the population. Who knows how many children this little girl will choose to have when she is older. She may choose to have 20, she may choose to have only one. Hell, she may even choose to have none. Nobody knows. So please save your ranting for an appropriate moment?! Oh yes, and possibly learn how to post a thought in an intelligent way without putting others down.

jeffhatesme, i was actually thinking that they might have misdiagnosed and she has the disease like a girl on house had, where it wasnt really a girl. when the egg starts to develop in the early stages, it was a boy, but the development stopped and the testes formed but not the penis. the girl was fertile because she didnt have any eggs in there to begin with. the only reason they found out it was a boy was because "she" had testicular cancer.

the disease name is Androgen insensitivity syndrome.

Basketcase Turners is not a "sickness", it`s a chromosomal condition which affects fertility.

I have it myself and I completely empathise with these people`s situation, but personally I would opt for an anonymous egg as the emotional implications could be tough

That`s a nice gesture and all, but sometimes I think nature does this for a reason. There are already too many friggin` people on this planet. People definately should have to take a test to be a parent. I agree with those of you who say why not adopt. I`m sure there are a lot worse "conditions" that one can have anyhoo (See World Clock).

I don`t see what`s so disturbing about that...

Her mum was just like any other egg donor, she just happened to be her mother. Children don`t suffer from identity problems if they were born from an egg donor`s eggs, they call the woman that gave birth to them their mum. SOmetimes they don`t ever even see the woman that donated the eggs.

Okay, so if the daughter uses her mothers eggs, then the child will see his grandmother, but I still don`t see what`s so `wrong` about it...

And how could it be embarrasing for the kid? No one can tease him about it unless she/he willingly tells them. And he`s not gonna do that if he`s really embarrased about it and doesn`t wanted to be teased...

And the child wouldn`t be the sibling of it`s mother, just a half-sibling. Ummm... I dunno if that`s any better for any of you guys, just wanted to point it out.

So yeah... sorry, this is so long... I always manage to ramble on for ages. So I`ll shut up.

I don`t see what the big deal is. Really now. I mean if shes going to use someone else`s eggs it might as well be her mom`s, it will look like her, have her same genetics. I don`t think it`s weird. And what it said about the identity crisis.. umm if you the mother were to get eggs from some other lady then the child wouldn`t even know who the "real" mother is. At least this way they are genetically related. If you grow up knowing that someone is your mom, the one that takes care of you, and they tell you that you came from one of the family member`s eggs, would their relationship really change?

I really don`t see anything gross about that in the least. The girl dosen`t even have to tell her kid that she not the biological "mom". And the baby would have all the same genetics and everything. And if the girl did tell her kid about her condition and how her mom donated the egg and everything, the baby would most likely be understanding and grateful. But I guess some people cant understand the niceties of it.

I wouldnt be down with that. Not even a little bit. I`m not planning on having a child myself as I cant see myself happily bringing a child into the world when there are so many that need good homes.

It was embarrassing when my mom made me wear her old sneakers to gym class once. Do you know how embarrassing it would be to have you mom freeze her EGGS to be put in you later?

"I think what the mother is doing is very kind of her but if the daughter does become infertile someday she mighb e better off getting eggs from another donor only because there could be bad repercussions (i know i spelled it wrong) with the DNA being so close together with mother and daughter. That would be my only concern"

The daughter`s DNA won`t come into play at all, so you don`t have to worry about that.

And rambozo, I don`t think he ate his twin. His twin just ended up inside him several months before birth and kept growing like a parasite.

The thing would truly be awkward if one day, the family ended up on Maury. "He cheated on me with my sister!"
"That`s also our daughter! No way would I ever do that!"
    Crowd: "Booo...wait, wtf?"

i`ve always believed that "genetic disformations" such as downs, hymathrodyte(sp?) etc are to do with the relation of the parents.
what i mean is that there could be two people who are related somehow (maybe centuries down the family tree) and they have a baby together.

wel basically what im sayin is that i think this same thing is gonna happen if the girl does use her mothers eggs.

the chance of the genetic problem being passed on is 0 if it came from the father

instead of the girl giving birth to a daughter with 50% of her DNA she will give birth to a daughter with between 0-50% of her DNA, depending on the egg.

    the effect of this is:
the baby will share a greater % of its genes with the grandmother. the baby will probably share a lesser % of its genes with its mother. the baby will not be genetically related to one of her grandfathers.

the biological grandfather is separated from the grandmother anyway

this would mean a greater biological bond with the birthmother than adoption / anonymous eggs

people give birth to their sisters children frequently (even happened on friends i think)while this situation is different, it is not dissimilar.

    ***
AND ALL THAT DOESNT MATTER ATALL IF THE DAUGHTER CHOOSES TO NOT HAVE KIDS/ADOPT/TAKE ANONYMOUS EGGS
