`To everyone who thinks this is just about having porn on your computer:

You`re all fuc king retarded and I hope you all suffer from identity theft for being so stupid. I hope the Geek Squad finds naked pics of you on your computer and posts them on the internet. I hope they steal your social security numbers and ruin your credit. I hope they stalk your girlfriends.

You`re all idiots."

And I hope they wash your cars, clean your gutters, mow your lawn, and walk your dogs! ARRRGH! FFS chill the hell out. People talking about loss of porn vs identity theft. And then you wishing it upon people. You, miss, are an asshat.

Geeksquad are usually noobs anyway. How about this: Don`t take your PC to GS, support a local tech that knows what they are doing. You can find these in the phonebook, by word of mouth, and on the internet! Wow!

CRAP! I have tons and tons of naked pics and videos of myself on my computer that I`ve sent to my boyfriend and didn`t want anyone else to see. I just took my computer to the geek squad last week, do you mean they could have copied all of them? They`re in a folder on my desktop called "Naked pics of me". Oh well. I hope if they took them they enjoy them. :)

envyrain is my new idol. =)

Anyways, I don`t see what the big darn deal is. Just learn how to fix your own computer, stop having such a panic attack.

Heh. I think my spidey sense is sensing some girls in here may have maybe sent their boyfriends, or worse yet, ex boyfriends some pics and vids. ;) In the case of either, they`re possibly already up on the net.

It`s not safe to keep any personal info on your computer really. Even without taking it to geek squad. That`s why every online anything anywhere has disclaimers about giving out passwords, credit card details, etc.

You wouldn`t leave your porn in a videocamera you take to get fixed. You wouldn`t record yourself going "This is just a reminder, my social security number is....."

Same with pictures you get developed, there`s a reason homemade porn has apparently skyrocketed since digital photos:
From One Hour Photo: "We have to report kiddie porn and animal cruelty...but anything else, no questions asked."

Digital photos, are not really safer.

Ugh, some of you people just don`t get it. IT`S NOT about the porn.. It`s about the personal picutres and informnation. This video didn`t just show him copying the porn and music, he also copied personal pictures.

And it`s easy enough to say jsut don`t keep stuff on you computer or delete it before you take it in, but if it break unexpectely you can`t do that.

Lots of people who have computers don`t know a lot about them. Have any of you guys had to teach your parents how to use things we think are simple? Like email or Word... copying and pasting... Do you think they know about this or how to hide their files?

Just because some of you know so much about computers doesn`t mean the rest of the world does.

"Then he arranges our icons all nice."

At least he had the courtesy to clean up the icons after stealing some porn. :-P

Chickoori: I noticed that crap too. Who the heck pays 25 bucks just to have something installed. I mean, who is dumb enough not to be able to install something.

I`m not too computer savvy, but is it possible to put passwords on your folders? If not, they should add that option onto future OS`. Being able to not just hide the folder but giving it a password would be nice for hiding the extra critical stuff.

This will sound wrong, but the people at Geek Squad must be morons. How could they get caught so easily if there is a chance some non-nice individual consumer advocacy group is out there watching them?

That makes me worried, anyone could just copy all your stuff, even stuff you`ve deleted and do anything with it - steal your identity, put photos up on the internet.

But then I don`t why I`m worried, I would never take my computer to one of these places. Most stuff I could fix myself and if it was something I couldn`t fix I would probably just buy a new computer. I have a really cheap laptop...

it`s best to just watch and delete when it comes to porn. No need to save it on your HD unless it`s actually good enough to watch again.. which hardly ever happens with me.

Well... it`s not like you film porn so it can never be watched, right?
I don`t think people who are meant to be working should be wasting their time going through people`s things, but it isn`t all that much of a big deal. If you`re so desperate for your porn not to be found, don`t keep it in an obvious place on the computer.

Not very surprising. It is worrying, though, because of the fact that they could, if they wanted to, look for other private information. Let`s say you had a business and stored some of your important financial documents on your computer. Yeah, you should have removed them before you took your computer in, but what if you can`t turn your computer on to remove the files?

I don`t take my computer to the Geek Squad or other computer shops because a) I can fix my computer myself and b) it`s EXPENSIVE. My friend was charged $400 at Best Buy to get her computer cleaned of spyware and to get some more RAM. Ridiculous.

they keep saying Geek Squad takes files. this is just that ONE person taking files. don`t exaggerate.
you make it sound like the entire geek squad will copy everything personal on your computer.
besides, like it has been said before, just dont keep anything personal on the computer before you let them see it.

One moment they call it "stealing" and the next they say it`s just "copying" the porn. What`s the harm in copying it? I can imagine that`s what they do: copy it. Actually deleting it from a costumer`s computer would be dumb...

I don`t think you people are understanding something...

The tech didn`t just steal porn. He only stole like 2 videos. And because the person had porn doesn`t mean it was there illegally. I know a lot of you are under 18 but the rest of the world is allowed to have porn.

The real problem here is the fact that this guy, a creep, went into personal files and took pictures of the owner`s vacation and personal pictures of some girls that the owner knew.

Imagine if someone made intimate movies with their bf/gf and put it on their computer for their own use. If your computer breaks, you can`t GET to those files to remove them before you take it to the geek squad to fix it. Then the tech can steal YOUR private movies, pleasure himself to YOU and YOUR gf/bf, then possibly upload it to the internet for millions of other people to see.

Then you have credit card info, tax info, social security numbers, contacts, purchases, etc...

Do any of you get it yet?

This is why its important to learn how to maintain your own computer. Its absolutely vital if you want to keep your stuff private.

What do you expect when you have a "stranger" looking through your stuff. Hell, one Geek Squad tech was busted a few months ago for taking video of some girl in their house while he was "supposed" to be fixing the computer. Anyway, to play it safe just use an external hard drive.

I`m not certain it`s technically "stealing," since the files are still THERE, they`ve just been copied. But I can see how somebody would feel a bit violated, IF they were to find out.

Bad Geek Squad! BAD GEEK SQUAD!! No cookie!

I don`t see what the big deal is. If you`re making porn of yourself it`s another matter... but otherwise 90% of the time....

You`re complaining because the stuff you stole (Kazaa movies, music, porn) is being copied? Worse yet, it`s stuff you probably let people download through Kazaa.

Obviously they shouldn`t be looking at credit card details and whatnot, but if I was the techie, I`m not going to feel a smidgen of guilt nabbing some MP3s.

Or... okay, What does O/S mean?
What is binary? What is hexadecimal? What are their limits?

Do you know PERL? Linux? Can you build a computer from scratch? (of course, gathering parst and all first)

Your saying stuff like operating a computer is an easy thing. Well, have fun when your computer craps up, now what? Seems you`re dumb.

What you speak is blasphemy towards geeks. This isn`t new.</i>

dude chill out.
did he have any personal attacks against you?

i dont see what the big deal is? i mean they probably illegally downloaded it anyways. and besides it not like the owner is IN the porn. i could see why it would be a big deal if someone had like top secret NASA information -- but then again, why would NASA go to the geek squad for help

What do you expect? Tech support people are just potentially underpayed humans and humans are nosy by default.

That`s why personal documents should be stored in encrypted containers. Read about Truecrypt if you care: http://www.truecrypt.org/

If you think it is not worth your time you have to worry about people browsing your hard drives ;)

This is very interesting to me. I mean, it is actually quite serious someone taking your stuff. I now people who store people`s contact details that they need for work and stuff just in a Window`s Document. And there is always a risk of identity theft.

I guess you just have to careful who fixes your comp...
