CheryKoolaid, shorter lifespan is not necessarily an evolutionary detriment. The greater bulk could easily lead to more food options and better security for her pups. Evolution doesn`t really care how long you live, but how many of you live. Despite the grand (and arguably deserved) notion we have of our individual importance, in the big picture we`re pretty much just DNA dispensers (aka `biological sluts`..j/k). So who`s to say what is or isn`t a genetic "defect"??
And I agree, I wanna hug her too.

Waty, Read the article. Despite it`s huge muscles it still has the same size heart and lungs, plus she`s heavier than normal, which may lead to a shorter than normal lifespan for her.

Poor doggie. I`d be scared but I still wanna hug her.

Why don`t you try to check the source before hollering that?
The source is right on the same page as the bloody picture.

good answer Nazmazh, but we`re assuming there is a finite source of food for such an extraordinary manifestation...and that the muscle is unnecessary. Couldn`t that animal now compete for food on a level that other members of its species had no chance at? Perhaps this errant mutation so skewed the predatorial balance of its environment that it essentially fed at will...

If ya clicked the link on the bottom of the photo you will see it is not shopped. It also explains the mutation of the gene.

If I ever saw that dog in real life I would just lay down and let it kill me. Resisting might make my death more painful

It`s detrimental to build unnecessary muscle. It requires a high investment of energy and protein. Which means that the mutant would have to consume much more food than a typical member of it`s species just to maintain itself.

"After serving several search warrants on the Bond`s estate regarding the BALCO case, to no avail, investigators finally stumble onto a theory..."

also- this condition is attributed to a "genetic defect"? DEFECT?? How exactly is this condition an evolutionary detriment?

I have to say, if I was blind, I would definitely want this to be my seeing-eye dog. No little kids would want to pet him, people might run out of the way, and if they didn`t I`d train the dog to growl and bark until they ran.

They`re called bully whippets. It`s caused by a mutaion of one single defective copy of the myostatin gene.

This dog has a double-mutation in the myostatin gene. I remember having to learn about the gene in one of my genetics courses. The gene regulates the building of muscle tissue. Lacking both copies means that muscle tissue is built without any regulation.

For goodness sake, the guy even gave you a reference to a newspaper article and you still say "SHOPPED" as if it makes you feel clever. Just because something looks out of the ordinary and isn`t on World of Warcraft doesn`t mean its not real.

ps. If that DOES turn out to be fake then sorry.

Whether the picture is real or not, I have seen this in a mouse so it`s definitely possible. It (the mouse) was intentionally genetically altered so that it never stopped producing muscle.

I wouldn`t mind a little extra muscle... but that`s not healthy. Most actual bodybuilders aren`t necessarily what you`d call "fit", and when they`re on show they dehydrate themselves for the best effect and are at their weakest just before performing, sometimes relying on a sugar rush to get them through the performance.

no its real, the dog lacks a gene that produces myostatin (spelling) any way its a hormone that stops muscle growth, it happens very rarely in humans and other animals.
