Read about this a few days ago. Its a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII prototype (only one there is) that was commissioned by Ford who then decided to pass on the idea and ordered it destroyed. It never was and is now for sale on ebay:

That`s very cool indeed, but I don`t imagine it`s very sturdy against being hit by another car etc, and how do you lower the windows?

Wow, it`s only going for 22,000. I`d figure people would want that thing like crazy and go up to like, 1,000,000. That would suck if Ford demanded it to be destroyed after you had bought it.

From the ebay auction mcsedad linked to:

"At the moment, the drivers door is not operational. A skilled mechanic was able to get the passenger door functioning perfectly. The drivers door will require some tinkering as well as knowledge of electronics and possibly hydraulics to get it to function."

So I`d say no, the door mechanism is NOT particularly sturdy...

Add to that the likely weakness in side-impact collisions and the apparent lack of any manual door locks (necessitating a remote key fob, and locking you out entirely if the batteries in your remote die or some electronic component stops working,) and I`d say it`s pretty clear why Ford/Lincoln scrapped the idea.

Which is a shame, because the concept (and execution, for the most part) is awesome.

Also you have to consider how you`d get out of the car if, say, you managed to drive into a river or lake or something.

With electric windows, the electrics tend to be at the top of the door, just beneath the glass. You`ve got until the water reaches the glass to get out.

From the looks of it, the machinery is mostly under the car, so by extension there most be some electronic parts. Most times the bottom of the car is the first part to get wet.

If they provided a way to get out without using the door mechanism it would be ok. No wonder it was scrapped, it`s just not safe enough.

    Oh, and, it`s too noisy.

Looks nice, but kinda a pain in the buttocks, when it`s either raining, snowing, windy, hailing or just drating cold.....Esspecially, because the window goes down first ...;)

First you get the full blow of snow in your face, and then the entire door goes down, so you`ll know what your car interior is going to look like....;)

And ehm....imagine you are late....."let`s go honey! Close the F-ing door!"
    "I`m working on it!"*zooooooooooooooooom*

    Maybe not só practical..;)

People are talking a lot about getting it from the side and how that`s not safe. First of all, stop driving like you`re in GTA. Second, if a car hits you from the side with enough speed to really hurt you, a real door probably wouldn`t make much difference anyway...

I`ll be the one guy that says Ford was right to pass on this retarded idea. How do you get in when the fuse blows? How do you get out after an accident? What if an electric motor dies? What`s it going to cost to repair? This idea is worse than the electric seatbelt fad of the 80`s. What about under the car if the rails get bent? I can do this all day with this horrible idea? Ford would have faced so many lawsuits.

Also, what if your car has some big technical problem or some big emergency (like you drive into a lake etc), and the door wont lower? I think I prefer the idea of being able to manually get the door open.

Cool, but you could easily get screwed and stuck in the car. What happens if you crash and fall into the water? How are you going to open the door?

No one`s said it yet so I`m going to be the ass of the thread!

    ...SHOPPED.

Just kidding. Awesome door. But for a Lambo, they could`ve made the outside cooler.

That was cool, but it`s a hassle that it has to roll down and roll up the window over and over again.

It`s not an original idea. The BMW Z1 Roadster from the early `90s did the same thing.

    Still a good trick though.
