why are people so worked up about this? its not that special, all animals are like this. animals sense changes in people. the cat isnt killing them he just sits next to them during the final hours, its actually really sweet. when my mom was pregnant with me she didnt want her family to know, and her grandma`s cat jumped on her lap and started purring and the cat usually didnt like my mom and stayed away. theres been tons of cases like this before.

but the cat is a cutie<3

has anyone considered that there might be something about the cat that`s causing respiratory failure or cardiac arrest with prolonged exposure?

"when a cat curls up on your chest, it`s not being affectionate, it`s checking whether you`re still breathing. if a cat finds you dead, it`s found a rather plentiful food source."

Holy sh.it then what was MY cat doing all this time?

Is anyone reminded of the movie Constantine with this?

When Keanu Reaves looks into the black cats eyes and gets transported to Hell?

no no i don`t mean to say they`re mean at all, i like cats. it`s just how nature works, cats don`t necessarily respect the dead as we do.

I hope this doesn`t sound bad, but I think it`s kind of cool. Yes, the cat has a keen sense for these things, apparently, but maybe the cat didn`t want the older people to be alone during their final hours.

They say cats have a keen sense for the dead. They can see spirits, and in this case, can sense when someone is about ready to pass.
The nursing home should feel honored to have this kitty at their establishment!

Oh, and another thing - not all cats are mean, and shiggiddy... I have THREE cats that like to curl up on my nexk to be affectionate. My cats have never been mean to anyone!

As with any animal, it all depends on how they are raised. If any of you have mean pets, then maybe you should`ve treated them better when they were little. My husband and I also have a dog that is as equally friendly as our cats are.

i imagine the cat in this nursing home doesn`t have enough time to do much damage before one of the people working there finds the person has died. especially with them specifically watching it, now that it`s gotten a bit famous

Very very sweet. But in answer to the people freaking out, it appears (if you read the article) that they were not aware of what was going on at all. I mean the cat is in the Alzheimer`s & Dementia ward. At that late stage those poor folks aren`t really understanding ANYTHING.

That`s a sweet cat. I just think that maybe he likes to comfort the patients.

All my cats wanted to do was tear my throat out.

I have a dog now.

i typically don`t comment on this site, just lurk, but i need to comment on this. i`m not sure if any of you have read it, but in terry pratchett`s discworld series the only two things that can see death (grim reaper) while they`re alive are wizards and cats. death is portrayed as being a big fan of cats and the cats lke him back. oscar wants to be near his buddy death! i`m not in any way saying this is true, but it`s an interesting thought.

Didn`t some old civilization think cats were the guardians of death or something along those lines? I`m thinking it was the Egyptians, but it`s been so long since I`ve studied them that I`m not gonna guess.

If so, I can see why they thought that...lol.

Haven`t you people ever seen "Cat`s Eye"?!

Oscar is just trying to keep the little trolls from sucking the souls out of people.

...and apparently, he`s not very good at it.

"Sixth sense about these things" my ass. When people are close to death their body chemistry changes, some hormone productions cease and some increases, thereby altering the scent of the person. The cat (being raised in a place where people die alot) has simply learned to tell the smell of a healthy person and a dying one apart.

Why it chooses to lie down next to the ones that are dying is another matter entirely.

that`s one cool cat!

I don`t think it`s so much that the cat is "predicting" the death. The cat probibly knows the person is in pain and wants to comfort them. Personally speaking, when I`ve been ill my cat will curl up right next to me and not leave me. However after I`ve gotten better she`ll up-right ignore me.

that`s really neat... my cat always wanted to comfort me when i was hurt as a child... i cut my hand open, and after my mom sealed it up, she curled up on me while i was bawling. idk if that`s a "self-serving" tendency... but it made me feel better.

It`s kind of like dogs who can detect breast cancer. I read a story about one who kept nudging his owner`s right breast, to the point where she got curious enough to get a mammogram and BAM...breast cancer.

I`d like to have a friend like that when I die. Very sweet kitty :)

:-O creepy. its weird, its been said cats and dogs have a sixth sense about these things. Some say its because they`re more in tone with nature then humans, but idk. it`s all weird.

they shouldnt have placed the cat outside the room, i wouldnt like to piss off the feline grim reaper.
