Messed. Up.
People need to accept that homosexuals do exsist. And will continue to exsist. And if your child is homosexual, get over it. If you`re a good parent you should just want them to be happy.

One of the vice-principles (pretty much just a disciplinarian) gave two girls three days ISS because they had a quick kiss before they went to class.
It was ridiculous. He usually just tells people to break it up. The sad thing is, no one said anything about it.

Thats F**king stupid. Its not up to the parents, or the teachers, or the government, or the super intendent, or the principal for that matter to decide who their child kisses. Sure they have a right to know WHO, and not a complete stranger, but not whether or not they should kiss them. Its just ridiculous that a small projection of affection (haha rhyme) creates such an arguement. Just plain stupid.

Wow... what the heck is up with Gig Harbor lately? They`ve been getting quite a bit of press for such a tiny town. Anyway, would they really be all that upset if a boy and girl were caught kissing? I don`t think so. It`s stupid, really.

Jesus f*cking Christ. This is bullsh*t. Who you`re kissing is your own business. That, and the fact that I`m sure he doesn`t report every heterosexual couple he catches kissing. I mean, are you serious? How would you feel if your parents knew everything you did in high school? I know my parents wouldn`t care, but a lot of people`s would, but it`s not their parents` decision who they`re kissing.
You could seriously cause a lot of trouble doing this. I`m all for reducing violence in schools, and all that sh*t, but this is seriously f*cked up.

It`s just wrong how parents and teachers alike don`t let their kids/students have their own private lives that they don`t know about. As long as it isn`t actually harming them in any way it`s simply nosy no matter how you`re related to the kid.

Re: P-Chanmisao

I hear ya there. I am sure they wouldn`t have done anything about it if it was a boy and a girl. I sense that the school principal is slightly homophobic.

Since when do teenagers have the same rights as adults? There is no right to privacy for teenagers, especially when you are in school, which by the way, is a PUBLIC building. That negates any right to privacy, even for adults.

And is anyone aware that the parents specifically asked the principal to report to them about their child? It has nothing to do with homophobia, it has to do with the principal singling out a student because of a personal relationship with the parents.

And now to ruin the moment: Sorry about the multi-post. My thoughts are too long to confine to 1000 letters. Also:

It`s doubtless that the girls would have come out of the closet on their own eventually, but instead of letting them find the right time and give their parents a chance to get used to the idea, he told their parents, brought all this unwanted attention on them, and probably made those involved much lest trusting of their parents. This inescapably leads to mental problems and insecurity. The cameras stay. The principal goes. That`s how it should be. Where all of mankind is treated equally. That`s the promise our forefathers made to us 230 years ago. We`ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. Until everyone is equal, but not identical, we will be no more human than Cain. Human in body, inhuman in soul. And so I leave you with this tidbit: My right to swing my fist ends where you begin, and my right to an opinion extends no farther than to the boundary of your right to privacy. We are the same, be we male, female, black, white, latino, asian, old or young. Don`t forget it.

To children, rules are universal. If someone can do something, so can someone else. They would elect the person who would do the right thing, and object when they don`t. In that sense, young children are more human than adults. As for the story:

The dean saw the two kissing, and was jarred enough to alert the parents that their daughter might be a lesbian. That is homophobic in the utmost. It would be different if he had left out the detail concerning gender and sexuality, but since he left it in, it, not the kiss, was the first thing on his mind. Had he been a fair judge, he would have said that "It`s their life, and their choice. I may disagree, but then they could object to me kissing my wife." Maybe made a note and said "Hm...", but left it at that. Instead of respecting their rights and their persons, he alerted parents. This is definitely the worst thing he could have done.

yeah, this happened to my cuz too, on many occasions he and his bf got detentions/phonecalls home/ suspensions ect. just for kissing at school. What scares me is the fact that there is also cameras in my old school, in the TOILETS! Its just sick, perverted teachers who need a life and have ``problems`` with that kindof of public affection.

As for the parents, whether they pulled the child out or not, blame lies with them for (a) Not suing for wasting tax dollars, scarring their daughter, discriminating, breaking the separation between church and state, violating their daughter`s right to privacy, and numerous other constitutional violations; or (b) reacting this way, forgoing "unconditional love" in favor of a medieval, traumatizing, reaction.
Just because we`re smaller doesn`t mean we aren`t humans. We have a right to free speech, privacy, assembly, religion, protest, DPOL, HC, property, jury, PfC&UP, and rights. Personally, I think they should let 5-year olds vote. Five year olds don`t see race, sex, sexuality, ethnicity, home country, or anything else that people shouldn`t. While thei parents claim to, but really don`t, children believe in fairness. If they are taught the golden rule, and then their parents violate it, the child will ask why, and not accept an "It`s different for them".

Oh boy. Put on your reading glasses. This`ll be a long one.

Personally, I have no problems with the cameras. I have a problem with the man behind them. At my school, someone got stabbed with a pocketknife. He was expelled. In this school, two girls kissed. They were also taken out. My biggest problem with this is that the countless other things (Pushing people into lockers, flipping off, brawling) that have no doubt happened previously got nowhere near the attention this did. This should have never happened. The principal, instead of singling out this instance, moved on to the next tape, and find something where harm was done to someone. Cameras are fine, so long as they are used right: To punish people who harm a person or property.

Ah fck. This isn`t coming out right.

Doubtless other people were caught kissing, but equally doubtlessly, they were straight couples. A bible-bashing, intolerant bastage is the last person I`d want as a principal.

i dont know know how many were real lesbians and how many did it for attention and what not but ther was a group of about 15 girls who were openly lesbians in my high school. i know that 3 of them defiantly were because i had classes with them from 6th to 12th grade. no one cared. about 4 gay guys to. never once did anyone give any of them a hard time.

i just noticed something funny. my school was about 50% white 50% mexican. all the homosexual people were white.

the cameras should stay. im guess guessing here but the probably racist bastard who showed parents security camera tape that wasnt related to any security or safety matter should be fired.

the person responsible realize what it`s like to go around sharing that sort of information.

Finally I would also stipulate that those cameras need to be removed because it`s beyond obvious that their users are not mature enough to be able to handle such a thing. If anything security cameras need to be monitored by security personnel, not a bunch of crack pots who weren`t good enough to get university jobs.

These individuals have NO training in monitoring security systems, ADT Brinks etc, most likely monitors their theft, break in, etc alarms, so why do THEY suddenly need to monitor THIS method of crime detection?

To be more manipulative in that bad way. Hmmm I think that`s it.

They can`t post the video if they are underaged. Anyway teenagers believe it or not have a right to sexual privacy. People do not have a right to go around and judge who they like, whether that be boy girl, cute person fun person etc.

It`s clear that both the parents and the principal not only violated the above reasonable principle, and had no problem with this, but also both the parents and the official had no problem being prejudice either.

I would highly recommend that one of the girls get a lawyer and sue both the official and her parents for the commission of hate crimes, motivated against sexual orientation.

Furthermore I would recommend offering some sort of out of court settlement, or stipulating it as part of the suit that the principal get followed around on a daily basis by some sort of agency that would constantly monitor his sexual activity and report it to some sort of small audience. No doubt this girl`s school career has been ruined, and it is only fair that

Sorry for double post, but I don`t want people to think I think that parents should have no say in their kids life, I just think they shouldn`s rule over them like a dictator. They are people too! Believe it or not, we`re not absolute idiots who can`t make a single decision because we are young and naive, we have minds, even though we aren`t 18 yet. Just sayin`. And I think if the girls were doing something like having sex, parents should be told. But kids need their privacy. Seriously.

Yes you are.
We have cameras at our school, everytime I walk down the hallway,I usually flip them off. I don`t personally care that there are cameras, but if there is one thing I can rant about,it`s the abuse of power. In some cases in some schools, some people are right. It`s called favoritism I think. My friend and I run an editorial at school, and we wrote about favortism type things in an article. We talked about how some students could LITERALLY make out a few feet away from the principal, but one girl almost got suspended from school because she held her boyfriend`s hand walking down the hallway. Our principal gave us a lecture, something about how all teachers had their favorites, and he wouldn`t let us run the paper that week. I think principals abuse their power way too much, and we can`t do anything about it. I also believe the same thing about parents, they think,I had this kid,I can do whatever I want, treat them however I want and make them do whatever I want.srry 2 long:

I`m glad no one in the article thought that the cameras themselves should be banned. I`m also glad that the principle recognized that this specific use of the cameras was a mistake, and not what they were intended for.
I think it`s good that they have a safety system in their school, but it seem unnecessary to report kissing.

Somehow I doubt it was just one little kiss. I think there`s more to this story then what was reported.

And also, it`s not like they went through the taped LOOKING for any little thing to report. Someone saw them kissing. =/

And I know at my school at least, a boy and girl WOULD be reported for kissing. Because, well, it`s against school rules.

Honestly, I don`t feel too bad for the girls. If you don`t want to be found out do it some where you won`t be seen. By cameras or principals.

Cameras in schools are a good thing. Needed in most cases with the way people are these days.

One question though: How are those cameras invading privacy if they`re in a public place to begin with?!

The fact that the principal took the video to the parents is, but not the cameras themselves. People still have bedrooms, cars, lots of other places to do w/e they want free of the cameras.

This intire thing makes me mad though because it doesn`t even say HOW the girls were kissing. Friends kiss and hug eachother sometimes. They don`t have to be gay. It`s stupid that everyone is assuming so...

Sorry for the double post. As for cameras, I could give less of a sh*t. It`s not the use, it`s the abuse. But there`s a difference between sneaking drugs or hiding guns and kissing someone. And that`s why this damn system needs to be revaluated. Besides, cameras certainly did nothing to stop V-Tech. How come they were able to "stop" something like this?

Some parents. I don`t even have space to be pissed at the school. First, the bigot brats who pulled their child from school just for kissing someone of the same gender. And then all those quoted people. Hey, moms and dads, how bout if you get watched all the time and whenever you do something out of line, your boss calls your kids and tell them. After all, they see you at home, they should see you at work. It`s only fair, right?

Those cameras do a lot of good. They deter crime, and if/when a crime is commited, they catch it on tape (given there is a camera in the area). We should have more cameras.

Goodbye privacy? How much privacy do you need in school? These cameras aren`t in the bathrooms. Too many cameras in stores, parking lots, anywhere, blah blah. I need my privacy in Walmart while I buy my cherrios. I need my privacy in Hollister when I choose a new overpriced shirt.

Everybody is being watched, not just by cameras, but by the eyes of other people. But looking at people isn`t an invasion of privacy. A camera is nothing more than another eye, just mounted on a wall.

at my old highschool we had cameras, just at the enterances to the building to monitor people entering and leaving the school grounds. i don`t know if there were more cameras than that.
on the note of the principle telling the parents, he shouldn`t have done that unless the parents asked him about that situation or if the other girl had some kind of record showing that she has had some trouble with the law.
other than dating someone that has been in trouble with the law, as long as you are dating someone close to your own age parents shouldn`t need to be informed of who you decide to go out with.

Parents have a right to spy on their kids 24/7. In fact, the school should put those surveillance cameras online so parents can check on their kids whenever they want to, just to make sure they aren`t dozing off in class or flirting with people you don`t approve of or doing all the stuff you did when YOU were a teenager.

But of course it`s impossible to have cameras in every nook and cranny; and kids will always find spots to do their immoral deeds. Therefore, we should contact that cat-cam guy and have him strap a camera around the neck of every kid, so parents can constantly see what their kid is seeing.

But what if your child skips school altogether? Terrible harm could befall them and you wouldn`t even know about it! That`s why we have those GPS ankle bracelets they use on sex offenders. An alert could be sent out to parents whenever their kids roam off-campus! Isn`t that great?

Just to be extra sure that they don`t run off, put a ball-and-chain on their OTHER ank

If it was a boy and a girl making out it would have been nobig deal but because it was 2 girls the school had to go and make a federal case out of it. And if those two girls were dating which we don`t know i feel terrible because now they probably aren`t even allowed to see eachother anymore. (i`m only assuming this it may not be true but the thought still angers me)

they weren`t screwing in the middle of the hallway they were kissing holy poo who cares.

It`s wrong to tell the parents, no matter what. It doesnt matter about the relationship the principal had with the parents, or with the girls (be it good and he thought he was doing a favor, or bad and he wanted to have a jab at them), it is not his place. Now, thanks to this one ignorant prick, these girls cannot choose how that want to `come out`, which, as i understand through my experience with gay friends (both girl and boy) is a very difficult time and generally the fear of them not being accepted is much worse than the actual process. WAY TO GO Mr-principal! he gets the parents to throw them out of school - SHE MUST FEEL JUST FINE ABOUT THE SITUATION.

anyone who thinks that this is alright and `the parents have a right to know` is an ignorant d*ck! these kids are free thinking people, able to make decisions about their life, ESPECIALLY about their sexuality. the fact is that the parents have NO RIGHT to interfere because it is not the parents choice. its the girls choice.

I never thought of it being homophobic, and also saw nothing wrong with it. Our school has a no contact rule, so that`d be breakin the rules, and breakin the rules should be known by the parents. Also, if u do it in a public area, where there are cameras, it is pretty silly if u don`t want the video to be seen by anyone...

No I agree with you on that iarechiqz and Devi, but it depends on the school. I went to a few because I kept changing countries when I was growing up.

Some I`m fairly sure would have reported any kind of kissing. Some wouldn`t even tell your parents you were smoking or having sex, it would be internal discipline only.

This case sounds like it`s not the full story for one reason to me: "Shared what he saw with the parents of one of the girls".

Why only one of the girls? I`m thinking the parents and the principal are friendly, and that`s why he showed them the tape, not school policy. Although I also jumped to that conclusion and bypassed the homosexuality issue completely.

We have a kind of homophobic principal in my school. He has to have talks with the boys who wear makeup and tight jeans. And if 2 boys hug, ragardless of whether it was intimate or a greeting he has to go and break it up. This doesn`t affect me but I`ve seen it. He`s mildly racist too but I won`t get started on that.

^agree^
this just shows the intolerance to homosexuals,
gay and lesbian.
this is really mean from the parents to take the girl from the scholl and from the principal to report it.
its not the question if the camera should be used to watch the children.
the question shouldbe:
"is homosexuality really such a bad thing than needs to be reported to the parents?"
thats just a sign of intolerance.
if the girl woud have kissed a guy (on a normal school) nobody would have cared!!!
both the teacher and the parents are making me angry!!!

Baalthazaq - First, I`d like you to know I think you`re probably one of the most intelligent and insightful posters on IAB. But...

Completely regardless of whether or not the parents "have a right to know who their children are dating", is it the school`s job to report that information to the parents? If that was the case, would it also be alright for the school to report to the parents who their child hangs out with, or what `clique` they are associated, and so on?

The personal lives of the students is neither the administration`s business, nor their responsibility to keep track of and report. Yes, cameras are necessary, but the line really does have to be drawn somewhere.

Where is the video? On that same note, do you really think Baa that they tell the parents of every single kid that kisses in school? Hell no, it would take all year. He told on them because he`s a conservitive sh{i}t stirrer that was offended at two girls kissing. American public schools are a joke. You know what they are, free day care nothing more nothing less.

me and a few friends got suspended cause we made a band on bebo entitled "we hate mr eggins" (deputy principal). what gives them the right to be spying on our bebo pages and telling us who we can hate. sure we insulted him but who are we affecting if the insults are in our head, are they trying to tell us what to think

1) She did not get expelled. Stop whining about fictional events.

2) Yes, they probably would use the security cameras if they were caught smoking.

3) Cameras need to be in place nowadays because teachers otherwise get sued for every mode of discipline imaginable unless they have videotape footage of every indiscretion of the little brat.

"How dare you expel my perfect child"
"Here is your child breaking rule 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 19, 27, and laws, x, y, z, p, and m".

4) The kissing was a bit much, but yes, the parents do have a right to know who their children are dating, kissing is a grey area. Sorry 13-17 year olds.

Hello 24/7 surveillance and vigilante moral and/or religious terror! I wonder what he`s doing with the tape in the evenings when he spends some quality time with his hand. But hey ... we have nothing to hide, so it has to be ok.

Remember kids: always stay in line, never act different, don`t think for yourself, OBEY! You are permanently under surveillance!

Was it even against the school rules? If they were breaking school rules, that`s one thing, but is kissing against the rules?!?

That principle`s a discriminating [email protected] I bet he wouldn`t report a guy kissing a girl, and he certainly wouldn`t expel either of them. Kids have a right to choose who they kiss and who they go out with. Parents should only keep them safe from adults, so as to prevent their getting hurt, either emotionally or physically.

BigWaFuu how is it the parents decision who their child kisses?

There were cameras in my high school, they didn`t bother me, but what the principal did was ridiculous. I could see a principal doing telling parents about children kissing in they were in say grade three but once you get to high school something like that is an invasion of the students privacy. It`s not like they were breaking the law.

Kids do worse things than kiss other kids, regardless of gender. How about the underage smokers? Are we calling their parents? That`s actually illegal.

Of course, it wouldn`t have been a story if the parents` would have said, "Let her live her life without spying on her, jerk." like a decent parent would, regardless of feelings about homosexuality.

Hey guys, let`s just put a big-ass camera in BigWaFuu`s room and the next time he rubs one off we`ll just show it to his parents and then he can tell us what he thinks about privacy.

"I`m sorry to tell you this, but your son was caught kissing a really cute girl yesterday."

Go ahead and film the schools. But, only review the tapes in case of possible abductions or criminal accusations. Otherwise, Hands Off!

Dang, I thought there was going to be a video.

That`s truly ridiculous. Especially that one of the girls got expelled or whatever.

RE: BIGWaFUU comment
Whoa cool it there Shatner. First of all I suggest you start living under a better rock, try the 21st century.
Secondly everything is quite ALOT of crap to be watching, whoever wants to watch their kids that much is just a smidgen creepy.
And finally the next time your caught in the act of doing something `wrong` I hope your privacy is invaded too, because thats really what your saying is okay to do, mate.

The last thing I need at high school is the paranoid thought of people watching me 24/7. I get enough stress as it is! I don`t think our school has cameras... yet. I`m worrying about homework, tests, social stuff, and I don`t think I can handle watching my every move because it`ll be on camera.

It`s one thing to be safe, but this is going a bit too far.

It`s been around the public school for years now. Mainly its used to catch vandalizes, but it appears its uses are quite multifaceted.

If I ever have kids, I`m not going freaking hawk-eye every god damn move they make.

Not only is privacy out the window, but respect is as well. Shame.

Why not just have me follow your kids around all day? I`ll even take showers with them n stuff just to make sure they aren`t kissing anyone in there. I mean if they aren`t doing anything wrong they have nothing to worry about right?

"The parents dont have a right to know"? Yeah f*ck those guys. Those cameras are there, they are not on private property but public property. Those cameras can be used for anything beyond safety. Just as long as it doesnt violate their personal privacy such as bathrooms and what not.

I think the parents did have a right to know. It`s the parents decision, not theirs. The principal did the right thing. The principal wasnt selling information or giving information to second or third parties. He was delivering it to the people who have a right to know everything that goes on in their childs life.

Cameras should be used to keep students safe, not to give parents the daily update on who their child is talking to, eating lunch with, or kissing.. Stupid principal.
