poke321... are you serious?
I find it funny that you are calling us stupid non-nice individuals... Have you met every single person in the United States? I doubt it. You seem to base your opinions on the people who you have met, or have heard of. That is a very small fraction of the United States... so small, in fact, that many wouldn`t even care about it.

You are ignorant, and a sad excuse for a human being... You thoroughly disgust me, as does anyone else who jumps on the "America Sucks" bandwagon.

I believe it was family feud that came first seeing as Americans(ooo I use a generalization) tend to have a pension for mindless self indulgent money dealing shows as apposed to intellectual ones... lets face it Americans(did it again :P) love to be ignorant and forget about the rest of the world for several hours just to feel good.

P.S. I personally am an American jobless slob of a teenage dropout and spend many hours a day watching mindless zombie fodder on television I however prefer to watch the history channel (history international BTW)and other channels such as discovery and national geographic.

P.P.S. I believe Auckland is the largest NZ city if I am not mistaken (no I didn`t Google that you jerks I just watch tv too much)

There are stupid people everywhere, and those two just happened to lower the standard...but that doesn`t mean people of the USA suck at geography. I`m a bit miffed at, "Name a country other than America that starts with an `A`" I`ve always thought of it as North America + South America = the Americas.

What`s sad is that woman with the "Asia" thing though. What the hell? She forgot Antarctica. )-|

Whoever posted this as "Americans suck at Geography," I would like to give my most sincere apologies. I didn`t realize that you were a dumbass. Really, it was my mistake... The title I would prefer to see on all of your future posts, however, is "I am a retard, please don`t look at this."

So, next time, whenever you feel the need to generalize a whole country based off of the actions of eight people, who were much smarter that you could ever be, by the way, please just remember to shut your face. I`m sure we would all agree, it would be for the best. Also, you can just remember how much better it is in the US than in your dank little hole you call your home. Get out of it and maybe, just maybe, you will realize that not everybody is perfect, especially you.
Piss off.

For the record: What we regard as continents are generally just terms of convenience that do not accord with the dictionary meaning of the word, identifying geographical groupings rather than contiguous land masses. In one case they indicate cultural boundaries - whereas Europe and Asia are regarded as separate continents, clearly they are part of the same land mass.

As for the question of Australia`s place, I have seen "Australia", "Australasia" and "Oceania" used interchangably, although the first term seems to be most widely favoured these days. "Australasia" appears to be a predominently British term which is rarely referred to elsewhere. "Oceania" is more commonly used to group the Pacific Islands and occasionally New Zealand, but rarely the Commonwealth of Australia itself. Again, this goes beyond the strict definition of a continent, and the fact that there is no universal agreement underlines that fact that they are nothing mo

BurnBurn, Australia IS a continent. Continent and the term Australasia are two different but related things, so I can see you confusion.

Americans are notoriously bad at geography, although it is a stereotype, as not all are that bad.

I had a school-distributed agenda, and they have these little didjaknow facts at the bottom, and it said "Did you know that Afghanistan is the only country that starts with A that doesn`t end with A?" so I went to the country listing in the front and there, right at the beginning was Azerbaijan.

It just bothers me when people lump all Americans into one group. Sure our government and citizens have their flaws, but honestly what nation doesn`t? Maybe it`s because my parents came to this country from different nations but I truly believe that with all the opportunity that the U.S. has to offer you really can become anything you want. Not many other nations can say that.

IAB is beating a dead horse. Jesus. First off, I`ve seen enough videos of idiots guessing Brazil was in Europe, and it has gotten old. Second, Americans are called racist, sexist, homophobic bigots, and yet no stereotype is used more than "American".

Being American does not make you bad at geography, being an idiot does. Don`t pretend for five seconds that some other country (Canada, Australia, or any European country) does not contain idiots.

What is this proof of? That some morons got on Family Feud?

You people are pathetic. It is sad to think how being American makes someone hate you for no reason other than the fact that you are an American. What a drating farce. You say we stereotype and discriminate, yet it won`t take the average Canadian/European retard to say something on the lines of "amerikkkans r stuped lol".

Not all Canadians/Europeans are retarded (far from it), but enough find their way on the internet to make me puke.

My age does not affect my knowledge or intelligence.

I have met many kinds of Americans, and there is very little chance that I have managed to only meet the complete idiots of your nation. In fact, most of the Americans I have met are considered to be highly intelligent, but still, they know nothing about the world outside their own borders.
Statistics show that the average American is very poor at geography. I am not saying that Americans are stupid, I am saying that they are very poorly educated in the fields of geography.
Only 10% knew the name and location of more than 10 countries. Can`t blame the people, blame the government, and the chimp in a suit that runs the country.

I could state all the things that are wrong about the USA and its government, but that would take me a very long time to do. And as they say, "arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. even if you win, you`re still retarded."
So I will not argue any more.

Jon1984....Those were both interesting articles. I do agree with your statement about the large size of our country. We basically have 2 countries (Canada & Mexico) that are considered reasonably close enough for one to drive to. Where as in Europe, one may be able to drive to a lot more different nations due to their size and proximity to your home country. I do take issue with the polls though. As we are taught in statistics, polls are not an absolute fact. More of an indication or barometer. Let`s say that 8% of Americans travel abroad. With a population of 300 million that is roughly 28 million traveling. A little less than the entire population of Canada. I`m not trying to justify it just putting it into perspective. And yes, we absolutely have our fair share of idiots.

You`re shocked that a country in which 98% of the people think Paris is a person, might possibly be bad at geography??
0

Male 210
Every nation has its idiots, and Im sure these people aren`t representative of all Americans. However, statistically americans are rather poor at world geography being the second worst (behind Mexico) in the world according to a 2002 poll. I assume that`s a product of their own geography (being a large country in which it is easy to remain on holiday and separated from the remaining continents by the worlds two largest oceans) and a culture which simply does not seek to travel abroad nor teach its children about anything much outside of its borders.

If your interested read these for more of an explanation and some shocking statistics:

Male 869
One last thing kairobert.....my comment was just to state an obvious fact. The few Americans you have met don`t represent the entire population. Unless of course you have met all 300 million of us. Then I stand corrected.

In case you don`t understand math....roughly 300 million people are in the United States. That means 90% of that is 270 million. Hopefully there is still time for you to turn your education around.

Reply
Male 869
kairobert.....what is so hard to understand that sentence? You said that 90% of Americans YOU`VE met don`t know the answer. And I said that doesn`t mean that you have met 90% of Americans as in roughly 270 million of us. But then I noticed your age so I guess that would explain it.

The United Kingdom is a country which consists of Great Britain, North east part of Ireland (not all of Ireland) and some smaller islands surrounding. Scotland, Northern part of Ireland and Wales have their own parliament (like Australia does), they are sub-divisions of the U.K.

Oceania is the name of the Ecozone which SOMETIMES (often debated) includes Australia. It is not the name of the continent. New Zealand is more apart of the region known as the Oceania because it is on a different continental shelf then that of Australia but Australia is most definitely never known as the continent of Oceania.

Critic: America is NOT a country, the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is a country.

And what makes me kind of embarrassed to be American is how the rest of the countries are telling us that Australia is not a continent, but instead it`s called "Oceania".

In the US, we`re ALL taught that Australia is a continent and a country. Nobody knows about this Oceania stuff. Wow, we`re ALL ignorant. :-/

Actually... "Oceania" is the continent, "Australasia" is a part of that continent which includes Austrailia and New Zealand and some smaller islands.

HRDankness... to answer your questions:

There isn`t a continent "Austrailia". The continent that Austrailia is in is referred to either as "Oceania" or "Australasia".

Scotland, England etc. are not independent countries, at least they`re not recognised by the EU or anything like that as independent countries. Great Britain is the union or England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom (which is recognised by the EU) is short for "The United Kingdom or Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Technically, the country isn`t Holland, it`s "The Netherlands". It is referred to as Holland sometimes, but in theory, this is incorrect. Holland is actually simply a region within the Netherlands.

Hope this helps your understanding :D

What`s all this Oceania business?

Also, to the European chaps:
Is U.K a country? Or is each part of it (Scotland, England, Wales) it`s own respective country? And then you make it even more difficult and throw in Great Britain.

Also is Holland a country or is the country I`m thinking of called the Netherlands?
