I heard this guy on NPR. It was weird.
"This is why I view home schooling (for the most part) as a form of child abuse."
I was homeschooled for two years, and I turned out fine. I also know several other kids who were homeschooled and are fine on a social scale. I think it`s in rare cases that it should be considered child abuse. In cases where the parents either over or under-work the kid, or teach them to hate or whatever...

    @SilentxEm

Were you properly socialized? By which I mean, did you have regular play and interaction with a varied group of friends? If so then you were lucky because some of these parents see home schooling as a way to keep their kids sheltered from anything that may be unpleasant even though experiencing those things and learning from them could be infinitely better for them in the long run. Even being around people who you don’t like or don’t like you at school (and learning how to deal or work with them) is important because we all have to deal with that kind of thing an untold number of times throughout our lives. A couple of years is not that big of a deal but some people’s first real taste of scholastic socialization is at the college level and I can imagine it being really awkward if not downright unpleasant.

Quit insulting home schooling kids! Yeah, that kid was weird, but you can`t say that home schooling was the cause or that all home schooled kids are that way. Honestly, it seems more likely that he`s home schooled *because* he`s a little weird.

Home schooling doesn`t mean social isolation. I was home schooled and I turned out fine. Learned just as much as my public school friends and had as many friends as anybody else my age. I wasn`t home schooled for the entirety of my education, but I know of people who were, and when they went to college, they did better than most people who attended public school.

Blame parents that are bad at home schooling, not home schooling in general.

First: Get off the kid`s back. He`s a kid and still growing up as well.

Second: Quit the home school bashing. I grew up entirely home schooled and I turned out just fine. The school in our neighborhood was crap, and I`m very glad my parents decided to teach me instead of putting me into a knife and gang ridden hell hole that rated as one of the worst schools in the city. I`d say better than fine, since I now study abroad on multiple full paid scholarship trips, travel throughout the world, and maintain a very good life. I socialize just fine as well. In fact, I just started learning my fourth language, so logically my opportunities to socialize are much more numerous than "normal public schoolers" who end up staring on Jay Walk identifying a picture of Lincoln as, "That Uncle Ben guy who sells rice."

I`m ashamed of my fellow American`s education compared to many other countries. The college system is great, school system? Utter crap, except for a few.

    That child is metally challenged.

Where I was born and raised, "homeschool" meant people who could not afford to go to school.

From age 7 to 12 you are sent away to a private boarding school. You live and learn on campus. No summer vacations there.

From age 12 on, I was sent to a boarding and finishing school in Germany where I learned four languages including English, and Ghetto.

At age 18 I begged my parents to let me go to university in the U.S. which they allowed. Now I work a desk job. Whoopie.

Public school in the U.S. is a drating joke. Home schooled or public school, both produces absolute idiots.

No friends, no social environment, pedagogically unskilled parents? Even though I feel sorry for him ... what do you think you`ll get if you isolate your child and do mindless spelling trainings?

Sure that kid may be smart but with a personality like that he`ll just get exploited by some company until he snaps and goes on a rampage.

Anyway ... what`s this whole spelling competition junk good for anyway? I never understood that. Do you want to train a nation of elite crossword cracks that can name every president, yet can`t even talk properly, let alone do anything more intelligent than a dull repetition of some meaningless information?

Well, everyone here advocating home shooling are saying they`re well socialized because: (1) they know many languages; (2) they study well; (3) they`re more smart then others. I`ll don`t mean to dillusion you, still this has NOTHING TO DO WITH SOCIALIZATION. Being smart not equals to being socialized. This kid is smart enough, still this won`t make him happy. You just don`t want to acknowledge it.

I`ve got my pre-school education at home. This are ages 3 through 6 here in Russia. Just 4 years, you see. Still, I can tell you that these 4 years had dramatical impact on my socialization. I had to learn dealing with people myself, while my coevals already did fine with it. And the older you get the harder it is.

I hope you all guys were extremely lucky to be really well socialized while getting home education. I was NOT. So I convince all of the parents I know NOT to put their children on the rack of home education.

School is terrible. Home schooling and regular schooling, public and private. You are just told to memorize things and recite them later on. You learn nothing... Home schooling was the worst. It was ridiculously boring and in New Hampshire where I was it was filled with Jesus propaganda... My suggestion for everyone: Go experience things instead of being told what it is like. Read more books. Quit watching documentaries edited by the FCC.

I think the homeschool-bashers are missing a very vital point....There are plenty of kids in public schools just as bad as this kid...some even worse.

Let`s face it, some kids have problems socializing with other kids regardless of whether they`re home schooled or not. For some kids, public schools are actually worse for them than home schooling.

Yes, i speak from experience. it wasn`t until i got out of school (100% of it public schooling) that I was actually able to get out in the world and socialize...before that, i was the most socially awkward kid in the world.

and spitebaby...i agree with you completely.

dont bash homeschooling because of this. i am pretty sure that this kid has asburgers so better that he is homeschooled and learns stuff than goes to a public school where they do practicly nothing and he wont be socialized with at the public school either because of social problems that come with the asburgers.

Evidently they forgot to teach him how to think of anything other than the spelling of words. The reason a lot of you can`t make it through the video is because he is displaying abnormal human behavior. There`s certainly something wrong with him..even outside of socialization. A normal person shouldn`t act like this...even my "nerdy" (plays WoW a good 4-6 hours a day online) younger brother has the ability to not look like a prick in a conversation.

Looks like they forgot to teach him to be humble and respectful. Not to mention the apparent lack of any manners.

I would rather be home schooled then public because usually the parents push there kids. In public school the standard is so low because of all the kids that "don`t care". If they just didn`t bother to try and teach them and kick them out of school before they just quit then the standard would be higher and we would maybe have a tiny chance to compete with intelligence of other countries such as China. There 4th graders are learning things that our high schoolers don`t even know. That is why I would rather be home schooled. The standard is what you set for yourself and how well you want to do, if you push yourself in home schooling then you parents would have to proceed in learning. Unlike my school, one of my friends knew all the things the teacher was doing already in algebra, she came from Germany in the 5th grade I think.

Everybody learns differently. And the American school system isn`t set up to accommodate everybody`s personal learning needs. Just look at Einstein or Steven Hawking. They told Einstein he was unintelligent and would never amount to much if anything. And Hawking was "a good, but not an exceptional, student" in grade school and in college "his unimpressive study habits gave him a final examination score on the borderline between first and second class honours." These people were geniuses but the school system was not set up to cater to these individuals. My point is some people need home schooling; as they do learn more than they would in public/private school. And some people learn alot more when they are self taught.

No. He`s not a nerd. Nerds have friends. Losers have friends. Loners like me, don`t socialize. Being a nerd, loser, or geek doesn`t mean you`re a loner with no friends. Some people just don`t care.

Poor , poor kid. Not all home schooled children are like this, but the stereotype is there for a reason. Seriously, I feel so sorry for him. And it could have just as easily been any of us.

I felt sorry for the woman interveiwing him! When the only answers you get are yesn no and `you said that wrong` it can`t be easy to interview someone ><

...and I guess I felt sorry for the kid too. After I stopped laughing XD.

But I think he probably had some sort of deasease/disorder/whatever. Normal people (even if they are home-schooled) don`t ussually act like that do they?

    Worst interview ever.

But to those of you attacking homeschooling based on this one child, you couldn`t be more wrong. I know several mothers who homeschool their kids and they`re perfectly socialized. It really depends on the individual situation. Not all homeschooled kids are a certain way. You can teach your children at home and still take them to social gatherings, parks, extra curricular activities, etc.

wow dont home school your kids or if you do make sure they do something outside the home boy boy scouts or just some social activity. social interaction is just as important as book knowledge. Send him to a public school for a couple of years cause when he gets to college he wont know how to take care of himself.

Me and my younger brother and sister are home schooled currently and my older brother and sister were home schooled and the only one that is weird is my younger brother and thats because he has some very *special* problems. so stop saying all this poo about home schoolers being socially inept because i know some kids who go to public schools who have like 1 or 2 friends max. and i know plenty of home schoolers who have 40-50 friends so it depends on how there parents are teaching them and if they let them go outside the house! my older brother is one of the best at his job. so dont blame the kid blame is parents because its all THIER fault not his!

This kid appears to be somewhere on the autism scale (probably aspergers syndrome). If he went to a public school he would be brutalized by immature "socialized" children. Everyone I know remembers several instances from their public school education where some poor child who was deemed different was destroyed by behavior that adults would never allow in the real world. But for some reason we expect children to put up with this abuse. His parents are doing the right thing keeping him away from those types until THEY grow up.

This is why I view home schooling (for the most part) as a form of child abuse.

wtf? thats so retarded. I`m homeschooled and it`s been a lot better for me. I used to go to public school but I just _couldnt_ go to public school anymore because the people there were so horrible to me.

Now that I`m homeschooled I`m graduating a year early and have enough time to focus on my art work. When I was in public school I was in a program called IB, and after the first year in high school I couldn`t take any more art classes.

Now that I`ve been allowed a chance and been given time to actually build a porftolio, I`m going to be a photography major this fall.

    You`re so full of poo.

I know a lot of homeschool kids and none of them act like that. The kid must have something wrong with him. It`s a good thing he is homeschooled, because if he was public/private school, he would be teased and ignored.

Well I am homeschooled. I started being homeschooled at the beginning of high scool because school was making me physically ill. As in I got so stressed, I would get stomach ulcers. I still go out with my friends all the time, we see movies all the time and I have a boyfriend. I don`t stay cramped up in my house. I would love to go back to public school but I really don`t want to get sick again. Not every homeschooled person is socially disabled.

i swear, it`s people like this that give homeschoolers a bad name."

    THANK YOU.

These homeschoolers are homeschooled BECAUSE there like that, homeschooling doesn`t make you like that.

Tbh, I`m one of the most sociable people I know among my public school friends.

Yes put our kids in PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

They may not get an EDUCATION, but at least they`ll learn gang sign, ebonics and how to steal a car.

Leave the science and math (and spelling) to the homeschoolers. Public School FTW.

LOL Your homeschoooled? You just proved your entire point wrong by butchering half the words in that rant. It`s not good to be homeschooled and kept away from kids who "beat the crap out of you", when your mommy and daddy Arn`t there to help you, you gotta stand up for yourself. Whoever is teaching doesn`t seem to be teaching you how to spell or defend yourself well.

"Quit insulting home schooling kids!

Blame parents that are bad at home schooling, not home schooling in general."~Catlikegrace

I agree with that statement. I know people who home school and have been home schooled. They seem fine to me although one of them is a little cokcy but that`s just him.

Yes, lets put our kids in PRIVATE SCHOOLS!

They may not be able to speak correctly, and may be afraid of other people, but at least they`ll learn spelling, science and math but NEVER be able to use it in an actual job because they`re too afraid to go talk to people to apply for one!

Leave the being successful to the public schoolers. Private school for the win!

HOLD UP why are people defending that kid? First off, he did not look nervous at all. I can tell when people are nervous and he wasn`t. Second of all that whole he is still a kid is bull. At that age they should able to talk to an adult without acting the way he did. "Did you say my name wrong?" See a normal person would say "Its actually pronounced.." Or let it slip, not but her on trial. And the whole "You`ll have to ask my mother?"

With that said I am firmly against Home schooling. While cases like these are rare, and there are many successful people who are home-schooled they may turn out like this. Oh and someone complained about public school. We would people up for saying anything against ebonics. Ya dig that partner? You can make a public or private school debate, but why?

For those of you who claim that the homeschooling or lack of socialization is the reason for his somewhat odd behavior, I`d like to point out that he probably has some form of autism. I work with special education students, so I`ve known many people very similar to him. Autistics have trouble socializing and communicating (as seen by his short answers and awkwardness) and demonstrate repetitive behaviors (tuna sandwich, for example.) They also tend to be extremely good at spelling. So it`s most like not either his type of schooling or how he`s socialized, it`s probably autism.

ok this is weird because when i was in school(last year) there was a kid who had just started public school after homeschooling for most of his life.. He had the same type of voice, raspy yet high pitched, he looked very similar, and he did the same weird facial expressions. Socially retarded kids make me feel a bit uncomfortable because of they`re horrible communication skills and how they find mathematical errors funny :/. If i had to choose between being really really good at math/spelling/writing or being a normal person.. i`d just take being normal and have a life rather than being really awkward..

Liking tuna sandwiches doesn`t make you autistic, but one symptom of autism is hyperfocusing on something and repeating behaviors constantly, such as eating a tuna sandwich before every competition. Another boy I know who has Asperger`s (A form of autism) is obsessed with washing machines. Before that, it was mailboxes. Tuna fish is probably just how it manifested in this kid.

And I`m sure that beating up a thirteen-year-old boy will get you laid really quick. Uneccessary violence against kids is a real turn on, you know?

And someone: It`s not just the liking/superstition of it that makes him have a disorder. If that were true, pretty much everyone would be autistic. It`s all of the symptoms as a whole. There`s a lot of evidence pointing towards him having autism, so I`m pointing out the likelihood of it.

Oh and one more thing. PEOPLE ARE NOT HOMESCHOOLED BECAUSE THEY ARE WEIRD. They are weird b/c they are forced to stay at home, and are not spending their days with their peers. Even if the child was encouraged to go out and join sports teams (our local junior and high schools allowed local homeschoolers to join the teams) they still aren`t really part of their peers lives, so they become even more excluded. you are hurting your children by robbing them of the social experience that they need. And yes, obviously it all depends on the parent. If you have parents that are very educated, dedicated to help you interact with your peers and are not social outcasts themselves, then it could work. Other than that (and this is most of the time) ...IT DOESN`T WORK.

    for the record.......

do not compare private schools to homeschooling.....ever

I`ve been going to a private school my entire life, 350 kids. I`m not as wharped as you think. At least in a private school, you can meet other kids, and you arnt around your parents 24/7.

The major difference between private and public is the rules and how they are handled. We`re just nicer to each other, we rarely get physical fight. But ive definatly seen my fair share off non-nice individuals in my school.

People against homeschooling are sucking at the tit of the teachers unions and the Dems.

I went to public school. There were plenty of kids _just_ like that kid in a large public school, except they didn`t win anything.

That kid isn`t the poster boy for homeschooling, true. But to base arguments against homeschooling on him is BS.

Homeschooling is good if you do it in groups and get the kid into sports or youth groups or any kind of activity. I`m friends with 3 former homeschooled kids. 2 are great and have a lot of friends. The other is hated and a lot like this kid. They don`t know how to act around others. Home schooling a great way to get an excellent education, but you have to teach a kid to bounce a ball on concrete and talk to people without insulting him, I feel sorry for the newscaster. This kid had issues. He was a real jerk. It is so uncomfortable to watch, a lot like watching Michel on The Office.

OK, my view on homeschooling is this... yes the kids become more intelligent given the right people and teachings... I will give them that. they will woop my butt in a spelling bee any day... but because their social lives are limited, they only have few friends, and very little out of the home time... they grow up loving toy cars, and dolls, and toddler toys, i bet that this kid still plays with cars...
The fact of the matter is that, public school is cheaper, and is more beneficial to a being`s learning, not only educational, but for the monkey see monkey learn trick... if you see a kid smoking in the bathroom, you know it is wrong, and dont do it, if you see a kid getting beat up in the parking lot, you know he either pissed someone off, or is being bullied, so you stay away from the bullies and try not to do what that other kid was doing... not only do you learn how to react around other kids, you learn about the opposite sex, and other cultures... you experience them first han

If you took your car to a mechanic, would you want one that has had years of bookwork experience, or years of hands on training from on the job work....

there is definately a difference... I mean, come on... this kid is obviously smarter than most kids his age... but he has been socially dumbed down by his mother...
the reporter even was having a hard time communicating with him, and she does that for a living... I gaurantee you, after the cameras were off, she started cussing her brains out... saying "omfg, this kid is a effing idiot"
she probably took the rest of the day off for stress leave....

Something interesting I found about the video: the kid doesn`t look nervous to me, nor does he look scared like nervousness usually causes; in fact he looks kind of mellow. I guess the kid just doesn`t know how to talk to people.

Indeed, let`s cut the sh*t talk about homeschooling. If one were to seriously debate how homeschooling typically results in poor socialization, we should seriously consider the flip side to that coin and look at the abysmally poor socialization children are receiving in public schools. They`re being more exposed to the much more harmful aspects of socialization as opposed to the good aspects, in my opinion, or at least the good is outdone by the bad. I recently took up a tutoring assignment in which I tutor 7th, 8th, and 9th graders in math at the college and I was astounded when an 8th grader shouted `sh*t` in a sentence.

On another note, my friend`s hyper-religious parents but her into home-schooling so that they could supplant their own hyper-religious cirriculum. She turned out atheist, ironically, but aside from that is a perfectly social, extroverted individual.

For the sake of reference I was also home-schooled most of my life.

"they grow up loving toy cars, and dolls, and toddler toys, i bet that this kid still plays with cars... The fact of the matter is that, public school is cheaper, and is more beneficial to a being`s learning, not only educational, but for the monkey see monkey learn trick... if you see a kid smoking in the bathroom, you know it is wrong, and dont do it, if you see a kid getting beat up in the parking lot, you know he either pissed someone off, or is being bullied, so you stay away from the bullies and try not to do what that other kid was doing... not only do you learn how to react around other kids, you learn about the opposite sex, and other cultures... you experience them first hand"

You`re a f*ckin` twat. Which in itself would be fine if you realized that, but you keep going on and on about how public schooling is better when you lack a broader perspective. Not everyone follows your `monkey see monkey do` ideal.

Not if you were a poor kid that grew up next door to the projects and bused out to a suburban school so that the school could have an "appropriate cultural diversity". Trust me on this.

To everyone who believes homeschoolers are not social people:

I was in public schools from K-4th grade. 5th-now (I just finished 8th grade) I`ve been homeschooled. Now, I do have friends. Both non-homeschooled and homeschooled. I AM socialized. I`m in plays at the local theatre and have made tons of friends there. I play volleyball at the local activity centre. I`m not some outcast freaky nerd who only cares about studying! Now for goodness sake, please stop slamming homeschoolers because some mentally challenged kid was on TV!

Bright kid to have won a spelling bee of over 200 students.

But I`ll be honest; some of the words given on Bees are ridiculous, easy, or nobody knew they existed.

I watched a spelling bee once; I could spell over 75% of the words given out with more or less thinking. It`s all about origin of word, what it means, and in a sentence. Which is why they always ask those questions.

Of course, it`s a lot easier to spell a word when loungin` on your couch than it is to spell on a stage.

Just wanted to sa real quick, Payn8tention- the news can`t legally report on the health, physical or mental, of a minor without the express permission of the parents. In fact, they can`t say anything about anyone healthwise that is not theory or hearsay without the permission of the individual, because they cannot legally obtain health records without permission. It`s part of patient-doctor confidentiality.

That being said, it`s fairly obvious to people who`ve been around people that are autistic to some degree that this kid IS autistic, though probably not severely. His speech pattern is a dead giveaway. So yeah. It`s not because he`s homeschooled or his mother`s cruel- he`s probably homeschooled BECAUSE he`s autistic.

the thing that annoys me about home school, is that your parents ARE NOT qualified teachers. They are your parents, that is all. I chose to be home schooled for one subject in my final year of high school but that equated to me interacting with other kids and A QUALIFIED teacher over the phone and internet. Parents don`t have all the answers.

I deal a lot with homeschooled children in my line of work (well, it`s more of a side volunteer job, but I digress), and to everybody who is defending homeschooling: it is NOT healthy. Very few of the homeschooled children I meet are as well-educated or as socially adept as those who go to public schools. Indeed, the social problems are sometimes quite extreme, and easily linked to their interaction (or lack thereof) of social situations. This is not to say that this is always the case, but I most certainly see an extremely strong trend.

That having been said, my guess is that this particular kid suffers from some sort of mental or learning disorder; autism has come up many times in the discussion, and I would consider that to be reasonable. Homeschooling in these situations can commonly be more helpful, and I don`t blame his mother at all.

Given that he won the spelling bee, I would even make the guess that this kid may be an idiot savant of sorts.

why do people still cling to their old "read by the book" education?
Real education makes you think, do stuff, instead of just memorizing some book that ur probably going to forget in a month.
I have to say, America is one of the worst places for this kind of stuff to happen.
Nowadays, no1 should even bother memorizing something unless they actually have to, and that it improves the efficiency of their job
ie chemists will automatically memorize the periodic table
    in short, use Google

social with your peers so that they can introduce you to pot, dirty mags, teenage angst and all that plus of bullshi-t one gets to around. SURE, thats putting a reality in sheeps skin. Masking everything and making someone a social fu ckwad...but everyone has their reasons to homeschool or not. Maybe your trying to preserve old world values than a lot of what society has become today...maybe, your just trying to do the best as a parent to your daughter or son. Wouldn`t you want your kids to find nice children or nice people to interact with so that you could breath easier, and not worry about the things he or she isn`t telling you through their pride. Yes, i understand Homeschool is capable of stunting social skills. But, who here is so happy with people, or has a good image of humanity, society, or their community in whole? I make stupid math mistakes like that all the time, but that didn`t prevent me from making the highest grade in my Cal I class or being as generally smart as I am. Still, I guess that lends credence to the point that home-schooled children are typically smarter than public-schooled children. At least from my experience.

"...to everybody who is defending homeschooling: it is NOT healthy. Very few of the homeschooled children I meet are as well-educated or as socially adept as those who go to public schools."

It`s a bit extreme to consider all homeschooling not healthy. Like many said, it mainly depends on the parents and what kind of schooling they are providing. I was mainly left to teach myself and I turned out great. You have to consider all the variables and I think your line of work prevents you from seeing the good side.

If socially adept means I`ve had a gun pointed in my face, I know where to buy drugs, I`ve lost my sexual innocence at a very young age, I`ve stolen once or twice, I smoke dope and have been threatened by the county with boot camp, I can`t get into the military because of a criminal record... then no, I`ve no wish to be `socially adept`. For those who think I exaggerate, I`m directly citing what happened to my public-schooled cousins.

Ok...i don`t know if this will help change any of your minds...but here`s my opinion. ALL KIDS ARE DIFFERENT. What a novel concept, people not all acting how society thinks they should. Here`s an example that pertains to this video. A close friend of mine was home schooled for a few years along with her younger brother. She came back to public school in the seventh grade. She is well-liked in my school and has a boyfriend and is very smart. Her younger brother returned to public school and made very few friends, and eventually left that school for another school where he was able to make friends. So, perhaps the first public school shunned him, but the second didn`t, meaning not all public school children aren`t nice.

To continue, they are both very smart, but that doesn`t mean that there aren`t public school children who aren`t smarter. My grades, for instance, are just as good as hers, and I`ve been in public school all of my life. So, the idea that one type of school is better than the other is stereotypical, and ridiculous. All people are different, and some private school kids will be smarter than public school kids, and some public schooled kids will be smarter than home schooled kids, and some home schooled kids will be smarter than private school kids, etc. As for my opinion on schooling in general, (yes I just won`t stop ranting, will I?) I believe that most of the schooling done in ALL types of schools is pointless, regardless of your country, because you could be the smartest kid in the country, and know all of the school`s curriculum, and live out your life at a crappy job that you hate and never have any effect on the world after you die.

To continue further, that also doesn`t mean that some smart person like i described won`t find the cure for cancer or something and be remembered forever. It all just depends on the individual. As long as you live your life happily, whether that means going to college to find cures for things or just having a family, it doesn`t matter whether you got fancy schooling or not. I think that as long as you`re on the planet, why stress on learning things that won`t have anything to do with your life after school, when you could be just as happy being "stupid" and doing what you enjoy doing? (As long as that doesn`t infringe on anyone else`s happiness, if by any chance you`re definition of happiness means eating live humans or something) Well, there`s my opinion. Man was that long...

I`d say better than fine, since I now study abroad on multiple full paid scholarship trips, travel throughout the world, and maintain a very good life. I socialize just fine as well. In fact, I just started learning my fourth language, so logically my opportunities to socialize are much more numerous than "normal public schoolers" who end up staring on Jay Walk identifying a picture of Lincoln as, "That Uncle Ben guy who sells rice." I`m ashamed of my fellow American`s education compared to many other countries. The college system is great, school system? U

^^^ by that one comment i can tell you have major social issues. First you make an account to complain about it because you were homeschooled. Secondly you go off and basically say how smart you are and how stupid everyone else is all i can say to you is get your head out of your own ass. Anyways i was homeschooled for a half a year due to medical issues and it sucked donkey nut-sack luckily im not anymore because it was one of the worst experiences of my life, i`d choose public schooling over home-schooling any day of the week.

^ Of course it doesn`t work for everyone. Like I said, a lot of it depends on the parents. I thank my lucky stars I was home-schooled and was given the opportunity to have grown up on my own without the constant outside forces shaping who I am and how I think.

I think emonb is well within his right mind to express how smart he feels he is; given that he`s home-schooled he has something to prove, just as I do. The greater the contrast in intelligence between home-schooled children and public-schooled children, perhaps the greater the incentive to do away with the stigma that surrounds home-schooling.

He definetely wouldn`t act like that if he was brought up in a normal public school environment. I don`t know how his mom can live with herself, isolating the kid to the point of extreme social incompetence. This kid`s life is going to suck if something doesn`t change quick.

I`m not sure if anyone else noticed this, but Buddy isn`t too smart a fellow, which is to say he`s very gullible. He continually posts obviously fake links believing them to be real as the descriptions attached to said links demonstrate. On this link in particular, Buddy isolated the fact that the child was home-schooled and claimed it exclusively served as grounds for the child`s agreeably abnormal behavior. This was erroneous and generally just a bad move. Buddy isn`t fairly comparing public school to home-school and I doubt he knows what resultant socialization a home-schooled child actually has.

Since then everyone jumped on the bandwagon, myself included, to either defend or attack home-schooling when this sh*t excuse of a discussion could have been avoided entirely and we could have instead endeavored to discern the real reason for this child`s behavior and done without furthering the myth and stigma of what home-schooling does to a child`s social life. There`s something clearly wrong with the kid, yes. Was it necessarily caused by home-schooling? No. If you ask me, the kid seemed screwed up to begin with and was therefore placed in home-schooling, but correlation does not equal causation. Everyone would do well to remember that.

Thanks a lot, Buddy. Get a f*ckin` clue.

I agree with S_J_W. Poor kid He lacks social skills from not being around other kids. And my mom doesn`t understand why i don`t want to be home schooled. How is he every gonna make friends? or get a girl friend? thats the kind of kid thats gonna end up living in his mom`s basement when he`s 40 playing with his collection of fantastic four dolls. and its really not his fault homeschooling him made him have absolutely no people skills. poor kid.

CaptainPat needs to get a f*cking clue as well, it seems. Anyone who doesn`t know or simply won`t acknowledge anything more than mere myths about home-schooling is just as insular and slow-witted as this kid appears to be.

WTF!? I`m really disturbed by the replies. He`s not poor, he`s lucky, he won the spelling bee and he is probably very smart, and will get a high-paying job when he grows up. Personally, I would love to be that kid. The problem with you people is that you`re so manic about socializing, as if it`s the only thing in the world. I strongly believe that it is better to be smart than socialized.
Homeschooling is much better than the public school system, which is in a horrible state right now. Homeschooling allows you to learn at your own pace, not at a pace preselected by the government. What you are saying basically is "Letting your child learn and grow up to get a high-paying job is child abuse, let`s instead throw them in a facility with bullies, drug addicts, that will make them hate learning for the rest of their life and be stupid, since that is not child abuse at all".. idiots.
